ほど is a particle that indicates to the extent of which someone/something is or someone/something does. In this case, I like to think of ほど is a grammatical limit or boundary. The phrase preceding ほど is the “extent”–it goes as far as ほど.

This character is a combination of 亡 die and 心 heart. Here 亡 is being used in the sense of “no longer actively present,” so together with 心 it gives “that which is no longer actively present in the heart,” or something “forgotten.”

～なくなる; ～ことになる

～ようになる indicates a gradual change over a period of time. With an affirmative verb, the change may or may not take place gradually, in which you could use 急に to indicate that a change happened suddenly (Makino and Tsutsui 560). Additionally, when ～ようになる is paired with a negative verb, it indicates that a change took place over time. If the change did not happen over time, however, you must use ～なくなる。

To say you’ve become able to do something, you can also use the potential form along with ようになる.

Kanji: 日本語のポッドキャストを聞いてから、上手に日本語が聞けるようになりました。 Kana: にほんごのポッドキャストをきいてから、じょうずににほんごがきけるようになりました。 Romaji: Nihongo no poddokyasuto wo kiitekara, jouzu ni nihongo ga kikeru you ni narimashita. English: After listening to Japanese podcasts, I’ve become able to listen to Japanese better.

Kanji:  子供の頃に、聖書をよく読みましたから、難しい言葉を読むようになりました。 Kana: こどものころに、せいしょをよくよみましたから、むずかしいことばをよむようになりました。 Romaji: Kodomo no koro ni, seisho wo yoku yomimashita kara, muzukashii kotoba wo yomu you ni narimashita. English: Because I read the Bible often when I was a child, I became able to read difficult words.

Kanji:  その授業を取ったら、コンピュータを使うようになります。 Kana: そのじゅぎょうをとったら、コンピュータをつかうようになります。 Romaji: Sono jugyou wo tottara, konpyuuta wo tsukau you ni narimasu. English: If you take this class, you’ll become able to (learn how to) use the computer.

Kanji:  トムさんはスペイン語は練習しないので、話せないようになります。 Kana: トムさんはスペインごはれんしゅうしないので、はなせないようになります。 Romaji: Tomu-san wa upeingo wa renshuu shinai no de, hanasenai you ni narimasu. English: Because Tom didn’t practice Spanish, he’s become unable to speak it.

This sentence, though, could be written as such. Keep in mind, though, that ～なくなる does not indicate a gradual change. This sentence is just more natural.

トムさんはスペイン語は練習しなので、話せなくなります。

Other ways to negate ようになる

Kanji: 漢字が覚えられないようになった。 Kana: かんじがおぼえられないようになった。 Romaji: Kanji ga oboerarenai you ni natta. English: I’ve become unable to remember kanji. (Makino and Tsutsui 560)

Kanji: 漢字が覚えられるようにならなかった。 English: I haven’t reached the point where I’m able to memorize kanji. (Makino and Tsutsui 560)

Nationality Vs Ethnicity

Nationality in Japanese is show through saying you are a person of X country.

Ex: アメリカ人です。

I am American.

Ethnicity is shown by using けい at the end of the country name.

Ex: ちゅうごくけいです。

I am Chinese.

The difference:

ちゅうごくけい translates to "of Chinese descent" where ちゅうごく人 translates to "of Chinese nationality".

Things have changed.... things have changed a lot

PEOPLE WHO HAVE LIVED IN JAPAN, I NEED ADVICE

atm I’m very lost when it comes to food, especially shopping in スーパー. At home my diet is generally awful, but here it’s not much better; I’m subsisting mainly on noodles and cereal, because I haven’t a clue what food to buy (I mean, additionally, my fridge/freezer is kaputt. But that’s a problem for another time)

anyhow, all the other girls on my floor have taken notice now and it seems gossip is spreading because they keep coming to my door with sweets, dried fruits, even offering to cook for me, while saying “it isn’t good for you to just eat noodles”

on Saturday some Japanese students are taking us on a tour of a スーパー so we know which food is which, etc. but until then I’ve no idea how to demonstrate to the girls on my floor that I’m fine and don’t need mothering

so, food suggestions? bearing in mind I don’t have a working fridge/freezer but I have basically every other cooking utensil at my disposal?

N. 違法「いほう」 illegal, illegality, invalid, unlawfulness ------------------------------------------------------------- I thought this was interesting because 違 can be found in 違う「ちがう」, which is the verb for "to differ". 法 can be found in most legal terms in Japan. To think that the term for "illegality" can be literally defined as "differing law" almost makes it sound less severe, lol.
