I can’t help but wonder about what goes through Kai’s head when he thinks about his childhood. I think DR really showed us how much genuine love and nostalgia and sentimentality he has when he thinks of his happy memories with Nya.

He looked so damn happy in that flashback.

And somewhere along the line, sometime after Ray and Maya vanished, something changed. Maybe it was when the people of Ignacia stopped helping look after them. Maybe it was when he had to start truly relying on his blacksmithing as a source of income. Maybe he just got more and more run down and tired as he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. As he grew up faster than any child should.

Because he’s not a happy, carefree person in the pilots. He’s short-tempered. He’s moody. He’s arrogant. He’s impatient. He’s a bit of an asshole.

And I just can’t help but wonder how long it took for that switch to happen. For him to lose all of that joy and whimsy only kids have.
