Because I’ve become the kind of trash that unironically loves 三生三世十里桃花, seeing this fanart on my dash again means more terrible headcanon time! (This will probably make sense to @sarah-yyy?)

What if MCS was Donghua and Jingyan was Fengjiu and the price for overturning the Chiyan case was MCS and Jingyan’s names together on the rock of three lives?

So MCS still loves Jingyan, but they can never be together without something terrible happening to one of them. Of course Jingyan manages to talk MCS into a relationship - MCS can never say no to Jingyan - but this means that staying together literally kills MCS (because he also never tells Jingyan anything or lets him come to harm).

I was laughing then I was crying.

Reading about homosexuality in ancient china and - 

Okay so WHAT IF teenage Lin Shu decides the maximum aesthetic TM way of declaring his intentions towards Jingyan is to reenact certain classic (cliche) scenes with him. He does not, of course, inform Jingyan of this plan. 

Attempt 1

Lin Shu: Jingyan, this peach is so delicious! You have the other half. 

Jingyan: It’s okay you finish it. I’ll get another one. 

Lin Shu: …

Attempt 2

Lin Shu: Pretends to fall asleep on Jingyan’s sleeve

Lin Shu: actually falls asleep on Jingyan’s sleeve. Wakes up two hours later to find Jingyan working at his desk, clothes unmutilated. 

Lin Shu: How did you get me off your sleeve??

Jingyan: I just gave you a shove, you know you sleep like a log Xiao Shu

Attempt 3

Lin Shu and Jingyan come back from a fishing trip with a basket full of fish. Lin Shu with a face like a fried egg, Jingyan very confused. 

Lin Shu: He said it would be wasteful to throw any of them back in. WASTEFUL. 

Jingyu is watching all this with increasing pain. (I was never that bad at that age was I? He asks his consort. She laughs at him)

At last Jingyu corners Lin Shu and suggests that he might, you know, try actually telling Jingyan how he feels

Lin Shu: You can’t just go around TELLING people how you feel about them honestly Jingyu-gege don’t you know anything?

Jingyu: You didn’t have any problem telling that General what you thought of him the other day.

Lin Shu: Yeah but it wasn’t like he was anyone important.

Jingyu, smirking: Ah, so Jingyan is IMPORTANT.

Lin Shu: hisses at him and runs away. 

Eventually Lin Shu decides that his best course is to set Jingyan three quests in order to win the honour of his hand. (still not telling Jingyan any of this.) The first is a pearl the size of a pigeon egg. 

The other two quest items turn out to be the redeemed name of a betrayed army and an honest and just empire, but Lin Shu’s not around to give Jingyan his reward.

(this is in response to this post, i’m not reblogging it because this is spoilery and i think OP hasn’t finished watching the show)

When I rewatched ep 24, I was surprised (knowing how the rest of the show will play out) by how adamant MCS was that Jingyan shouldn’t pursue the case. He’s not even suggesting that JY pursue it later when he has a stronger foothold in the court, he’s straight-up saying that JY shouldn’t do it.

Anyway, here’s my long-ass take on it.

1. He’s testing JY. He needs to know how strong JY’s faith in Prince Qi and the Lins is, and how strong his desire to see their names cleared is. After all, 12 years has passed and it’s not unreasonable if JY has changed. Their conversations prior to this should be enough to prove that his faith is as strong as ever. However, this time, Jingyan is forced to consider something he might not have considered before - the emperor’s role in the case.

If it was only Xie Yu and Xia Jiang behind it, I think no one would have any doubt that Jingyan would have no hesitations in going for their blood. But now, to pursue the case would mean 1. to go up against the emperor, and 2. to go up against his father. It’s true that the emperor is neither a good dad nor a good emperor but to go against him would be against the very concept of xiao, or filial piety. The concept of xiao ( 孝 ) is a prominent theme throughout the show (see Yujin’s understanding of his dad for the years of neglect, Xie Bi when parting with his dad and when going to collect his body, Jingrui and his parents) and surely it’s no coincidence that the ruling family name is a close homonym to 孝.

So MCS needs to know how far JY is willing to go to re-address the case. I think that if JY had expressed any hesitation in going against his father, MCS would likely still help him clear the court of corruption and assist him to the throne, but he might pursue the case separately and take revenge in his own way.

I really need this in my life.

so because I haven’t been able to get the bbc merlin au out of my head, and because NO ONE WILL WRITE THIS FOR ME APPARENTLY, here have some more thoughts:

the emperor as the ailing and increasingly paranoid king who has all but snuffed out magic in the kingdom

any use of magic is banned and all suspected witches/warlocks branded as traitors and summarily executed

the house of lin has served the emperor for generations as magicians, until the betrayal

Jingyu was the only one in the royal family who had magic, and thus was already under suspicion

the emperor hating JY in this universe bc he defended the lin family and jingyu, and bc he continues to express the opinion that not all magicians are bad

NH as morgana!! But a morgana who’s fully in control of her powers and determined to hide it as well as the burgeoning powers of mu qing from the emperor

jinghuan and jingxuan strategically accusing ministers of using magic to get rid of political opposition/gain power and property

MZ as a secret magician? Except it’s easier for him to hide because his magic mostly lies in martial arts and isn’t flashy (guess whose magic IS)

the complete change from LS to MCS is easy to explain due to ~magic cure~

except now MCS not only has to hide his identity from JY but also his magic

he finally tells JY about the magic at some point, or JY finds out, except it only makes him more suspicious because now it’s not only the little gestures/habits that remind him of LS but also the way his magic FEELS

xianjing bureau carrying out a magical inquisition

except xia dong is starting to question if it really was magic/lin xie who killed her husband

xia jiang as the emperor’s pet wizard, who only escaped persecution because he uses his magic to hunt down others, and has throughout the years built back up the emperor’s trust via his thoroughness and ruthlessness

GONG YU AS A MAGICAL ASSASSIN just think about it ok

YJ’s mom died in childbirth and magic couldn’t save her, and yan dad doesn’t hate all magic but he’s heartbroken and bitter and can’t bear to look at YJ

no one’s really sure if jingmom is magic but her pastries are always perfect and never burns, and somehow her medicinal tonics and poultices are better than that of any other doctor

imagine now LS making fun of JY because he’s “as stubborn as a buffalo and just as magical”

MCS is still able to cast magic but the cost of being brought back from the verge of death is that it now takes a part of his life energy (and thus shortens his life), and he’s had to do more and more of it on his way to get JY on the throne and expose the truth of the massacre

I just have a lot of thoughts ok
