In the church, post darkworld, when it chooses to open the door, they just turn the doorknob since it's technically following the command's wording.

Kris has been established to be a pretty silly as a kid, so i genuinely think we’re seeing that Kris starting to come back because of Susie.

It’s been shown that Kris does still have a bit of control sometimes even when the player is still physically within them (when Kris helps us out in Tenna’s quizzes, the big piano in chapter 4, refusing to fully open that one door in the church)

but Kris also clearly cares about the friendships we’ve made. they look away in the S-Rank room when you have to kill mini-Susie and mini-Ralsei, as well as the way they do everything they can to stop you from saying things that will hurt their friends emotionally

that being said, I think we’re seeing the true Kris when they’re goofing off with Susie.

Thoughts on referring to Kris by different pronouns depending on wheter or not they're being controlled by the player?

"They tear the Soul out and lock it inside the bird cage in their room." (Kris at the end of Ch1)

"It calls out Noelle's name. She answers its call." (The player, using Kris as a vessel, at the end of the Snowgrave route Spamton NEO fight)

it feels a little weird in my opinion to have it/its pronouns be conditional like this, though for the life of me i wouldn’t be able to say why

i think it would be better from a narrator standpoint at least, for it/its to be used for the soul, and for when the soul makes a decision Kris isn’t fully on board with, if that makes sense (ex: ��Noelle asks Kris who they think is going to hear us, it says “I will”.” or something i don’t remember that scene very well)

Someone was saying they make Kris as feminine as possible because "NB people can't be masculine but they can be feminine" and it made me so mad because I'm sick of people thinking that NB people are just "Woman Lite" like it feels like we can't win either "They're only NB because they're feminine and NB people can only be feminine" or "They're not NB because they're masculine and NB folks can't be masculine"

non-binary people can be anything they want, presentation wise. and just like you said, the idea that non-binary people can only be androgynous or feminine enforces the idea that non-binary as an identity is just a different flavor of being a woman.

no, using they/them pronouns don’t automatically mean a character is non-binary in cases like Susie and Undyne (which I don’t remember at all but i’m giving them the benefit of the doubt here…)

but in cases like Kris, Napstablook and Monster Kid, when it is consistently used by everyone from strangers to enemies to long time family friends and family members, then yeah, that character uses they/them.

i understand initially thinking they/them = player interpretation when it comes to the main character and when you’re new to Toby Fox’s games. that is a thing that has been done in the past. i get it.

however when it comes to side characters? NO! the same way you don’t get to go “this person is actually a girl who uses she/her because that’s my interpretation” when meeting a REAL non-binary person, you don’t get to do that with side characters!
