Geek Journalism and critical analysis of geek media, primarily from an LGBT and disabled perspective. Basically, I'm trying to shine a light on issues that get ignored in either mainstream or fandom discourse, in the hopes that it'll get people talking. -- Murphy Leigh, journalist and screenwriter

If you’re following me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen me advertise my very first zine! It’s called ‘To the Monsters I Have Loved,’ and it’s a series of poems about the most important queer and queer-coded monsters/monsterized characters I’ve encountered in fiction.
It feels really good to have made something from start to finish. I wrote most of the poems (except “confessional”) back in February and March, but I drew all the artwork in the last couple of weeks, and assembled the PDF on Friday. I’m really proud of pulling a project together in less than a year; my short film took 2.5 years, for example, and my pile of abandoned original works is…sizable.
If you want to buy it, you can pay me $0.99 USD via PayPal, and leave your email address in the memo line, and I’ll send you the PDF of the zine!
Here’s a sample of pages:

Well, it’s definitely been A Day for trans stuff…
Two fairly big-ish stories today: First, genderfluid lesbian actress/model Ruby Rose got the role of Batwoman in the Arrowverse, and second, Caitlyn Jenner wants to be a Marvel villainess.
I don’t usually care when famous people express a desire to join the MCU. But I can’t help but take note when a trans celebrity does. Especially Jenner, since she almost auditioned for the Superman role that…

Every "Evil" Mutant is Trans Because I Say So (So There)
Every “Evil” Mutant is Trans Because I Say So (So There)
I’ve talked about the X-Men a lot over the years — from my B.A. thesis in 2015 to an ode to Romijn’s Mystique last fall on this very blog. They’re a huge part of my engagement with comics-based media, something that has given me both great joy and endless frustration.
But today I want to talk in more depth about something really important to me:
Mutants— particularly “evil” or otherwise…

When Your Head Caught Flame: How Bisexual Polyamory Could Save the X-Men
When Your Head Caught Flame: How Bisexual Polyamory Could Save the X-Men
I’m an endlessly picky and particular comic book fan. I have Ideas and Opinions, and that often means I’ll read fewer books. But, I think, it also means I find some absolute gems in the books I do read. In this case, I want to talk about the “Tomorrow Never Learns” story arc in Wolverine and the X-Men vol. 2.
I read TNL for the first time in early 2015, pretty much as soon as the arc went live on…

Happy Pride! Some announcements, and a Plan.
Happy Pride! Some announcements, and a Plan.
So, Pride Month is once again upon us! A yearly celebration of the LGBTQ+ umbrella and all who fall under its expanse.
This year, I want to use this time to get back to basics — back to the point of this whole blogging enterpise: I goddamn love me some queer and queer-coded monsters. Monsters and mutants got me here, and the time’s come to come home to them.
So, this month, every Wednesday, I’ll…

#Krypton 1x10 Reaction: In Zod We Trust
#Krypton 1×10 Reaction: In Zod We Trust
Well.  That certainly just happened.
My entire body is alight with excitement and I am practically devastatedthat I have to wait until 2019 to find out what happens next.  Under the cut, I’m gonna talk about some pretty spoiler-y stuff and some Feelings I have, and if you’ve seen the episode already and you know how I tend to react to this stuff, you can pretty much tell what I’m going to talk…

Krypton 1x08-1x09 Reactions
Krypton 1×08-1×09 Reactions
Oh boy, oh boy. This one was a doozy of a pair of episodes. From another familial relationship reveal, to a death that made me want to riot, the last couple of episodes of Krypton have been epic. Read under the cut for my rather late hot takes about Ona, Adam Strange, and Seg-El’s future sexual history.

REACTION: Krypton 1x07 — "Transformation"
REACTION: Krypton 1×07 — “Transformation”
Tumblr media
A.K.A. I was right and I’m never going to let the world live it down!!
So last night’s Krypton was possibly the best episode so far. A real roller-coaster of emotions and a “no, wait, what, really?!” moment on one of my pet theories. I am so damn happy about this show, guys. It is so damn perfect for me.
Under the cut, I’m gonna talk about a couple things: 1) the thing I’ve been right about all…

SPOILERS: My Infinity War reactions...
SPOILERS: My Infinity War reactions…
Okay, so, it’s been a couple of days, and I’ve had time to process Avengers: Infinity War and deal with some real life stuff and celebrate my best friend’s birthday, so now the time has come to talk about the movie in depth, with spoilers. Pop under the cut for my reactions, in full detail.

Krypton 1x06 Reaction
Krypton 1×06 Reaction
Okay, first of all, Oh my god.  There is so much to talk about with this show in terms of nuanced philosophical and political discussion, and I cannot possibly get into all of it in a single short blog post, so I’m going to just go with the three things that give me the most feelings: 1) Adam Strange in general, 2) Brainiac as the Voice of Rao, and 3) the moral quandary that Adam has placed…

‘Deadly Skies’ and the Value of Mediocre Gay Sci Fi
‘Deadly Skies’ and the Value of Mediocre Gay Sci Fi
So, if you follow me on Twitter, you probably saw me flip my shit earlier today about Deadly Skies, a 2006 sci fi disaster movie about an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Literally the only thing separating it from every other movie of its type is the fact that the main characters are a black woman and and a gay man. It’s not super well-made, with some juvenile editing choices at times…

Patreon Post + #ComicsGate
Patreon Post + #ComicsGate
Tumblr media
Hey everyone, just dropping by to leave a couple of links. First of all, I’ve put up a new post on Patreon, so if you’re interested in paying me for all this nonsense, you can go do that and then read it. In it, I talk a little bit about Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and how excited I am about the analysis of it that I’m doing. It’s gay, guys. It’s so gay. Also, #ComicsGate is still a thing, I…

ESSAY: Temporal Inconsistencies in the XMCU
This is the first in my ongoing series of essay-length posts about the craft, content, and themes present in different pieces of geek media. This first essay is about the XMCU, airing my grievances about its chronology problem. The X-Men Cinematic Universe has not been a shining example of consistency in superhero movie franchises. There have been three characters called Angel, only two of which…

Patreon + Tweaking Blog Subject Matter
Me! Technically, I’ve had one for a while, but I’ve spent the last six months trying to figure out how to come up with consistent content for it. Finally, it occurred to me that the best thing for me as a creator and for an audience of patrons would be to use Patreon as a sort of accountability system. Basically, I’m going to try and use Patreon as my daily work journal. When I’m working on a…

‘Logan’ Makes History, but Outlets Bury The Lead
Okay, so, first of all, I am so fucking excited about Logan getting a “Writing (Adapted Screenplay)” nomination. So excited. Like, I know it’s a long shot, given how much critical praise stuff like Call Me By Your Name is getting, but there’s a chance! And this has literally never happened before for a superhero movie. (I have to say, it feels really appropriate that the first script nomination…

Lots of Wakanda News Today...
Lots of Wakanda News Today…
Tumblr media
I did a couple of articles for Capeless Crusader today discussing the relationship between the U.S. and Wakanda in light of President Trump’s comments on certain countries in Africa being “shithole countries” — or, according to other sources, “shithouse” countries. Either way, it was a racist thing, and comics fandom came for Trump the way they tend to: by breaking out the Black Panther merch and…

Happy 2018!
Tumblr media
2017 was a really wild ride politically, but hopefully this year I can stay in the saddle with all my priorities and not get too distracted from the things I can do by the things I can’t. Later today, I’ll be posting an essay on why X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) fundamentally broke the continuity of the X-Men film franchise, and how I think the fanchise could instead have achieved its major…
