Why did Vernon Dursley know about magic?

Sure, he’s Harry’s uncle so he was probably going to find out at some point, but I’m confused why he knew about it before Harry did. I would think in normal circumstances, they would’ve kept magic a secret. I feel like there’s 2 possibilities:

1. He learns when meeting Lily and James. I don’t know if this meeting canonically happens, but it’s one idea I had. I think Petunia would’ve banned the topic of magic before the meeting though.

2. He learns after taking in Harry. I think in this case, wouldn’t Petunia have wished to keep magic a secret in the hopes that Harry was actually a squib? Even if weird things kept happening, wouldn’t she avoid discussing magic as long as possible? It would’ve been easier for Petunia to just say her sister was killed and they need to take care of the nephew instead of explaining magic and stuff.

Rationally, it would make more sense to me if Petunia kept magic a secret until Harry actually got his letter and was contacted by a Hogwarts professor like a muggleborn.

Ok so why didn’t the Eldunari tell Eragon that Murtagh was in danger? They said they oversee so many things. So they decide to show Eragon Murtagh making Mr. Stabby but then do nothing when Murtagh is literally dying alone in a cave?

I guess the Eldunari may not like Murtagh, but they know Eragon cares and wants to see his brother
