Moving Decisions Neighborhood Scout (neighborhoodscout.com) is a helpful site to see the safety rates of each city neighborhood. It will color code neighborhoods ranging which are the safest to the more dangerous. It will also provide you the annual numbers for number of crimes and crime rates per 1,000 residents. It’ll also categorize which crimes were related to violence and property. In addition, you’ll be provided numbers for how many of those violent crimes were murder, rape, robbery and assault and which property crimes were burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft. The site also provides a crime index for the city. It also provides other helpful information such as real estate, demographics, and schools. This can all help towards making that final moving decision. Most of the info provided is free but for more detailed reports, fees could apply. AreaVibes (areavibes.com) is another site that could help determine the best place to move. Crime Mapping Need to know what crimes have been happening around your neighborhood recently? With CrimeMapping.com, just enter in your zip code to pull up a map pinpointing recent reported crimes. You’ll be surprised what pops up. You can check as recent as yesterday or as far back as six months. Once you’ve pulled up the map, little icons will appear where a crime has happened; each with their own color and design to indicate the specific crime. After that, you can click on the icon for more details such as time, date, reports, charts and incident number. A similar site is LexisNexis Community Crime Map (communitycrimemap.com). This site can also show a density map of crimes in an area. SpotCrime (spotcrime.com) is similar as well but it can deliver crime reports via social media (like Facebook and Twitter), email and also has an app you can use too. Sexual Offender Map You never know who or what lives right down the road from you and after using this site, you might be in for surprise. It’s always good to check this site (nsopw.gov) from time to time to see if any sexual offenders have recently moved close by. You’ll enter in your home’s address which will then pull up a map pinpointing where every local sexual offender resides. Each pinpoint will show a photo of the sex offender, which you can then click on for additional information. Family Watchdog (familywatchdog.us) is another site you can use to locate registered sex offenders. You can also sign up for alerts when a sex offender moves into or away from your neighborhood. Apps Even if you don’t currently own a Ring Doorbell device, you can still use their Neighbors app (ring.com/neighbors) to be noticed of nearby crimes and theft. You can set it up to keep tabs on crimes within a 5 mile parameter. Citizen (citizen.com) is another app you can use for real-time crime alerts. It uses a combination of technology and people (their smartphone location) to gather police and emergency dispatches in order to create alerts of nearby incidents. Live videos can even be uploaded. Another app feature is you can do a safety check with friends and family who happen to be nearby a crime or incident. One site that has been rising in popularity is NextDoor (nextdoor.com). It’s a Facebook-like community site that builds a connection and the exchange of helpful information, goods, and services. Discussions within communities can range from anywhere between local gossip or business networking to keeping each other in the loop regarding crimes or suspicious activity. Traditional There are a few other ways to keep tabs on crime that don’t necessarily involve a computer. You could also do things the old fashion way and tune into your local news station on T.V. to hear about recent crimes. Word of Mouth – get to know your neighbors and community centers. It always helps to make friends and acquaintances with the people who reside nearby. That friendship may one day help protect your home and loved ones. Everyone wants the best for their safety especially when it comes to their own home. A home is place where you should always feel safe and there are steps you should take to help ensure this. Here are some tips you can take to help prepare for your safety. • Buddy System Become friends with your neighbors, also get familiar with the neighborhood watch. Perhaps your neighborhood has a local bulletin board people refer to. However, thanks to today’s technology, neighborhood apps are becoming more and more resourceful to get warnings and advice out around fast. If you need to walk, try to walk with friends instead of alone. Remember, safety in numbers. • Be Alert of Surroundings Pay attention and keep a clear head, don’t be distracted when walking such as constantly being on your cellphone. The later it gets in the day, instead of taking that scenic route, take the quickest and safest way home. If you think you’re being followed, switch directions or cross a street and try to enter in a populated public area such as a restaurant. Don’t be afraid to call for help if need be. Be alert in your neighborhood too and call the police if you see suspicious activity. • Lighting and Visibility If you’re going to be late or away from your home for an extended amount of time, having a light on in your home that can be easily viewed from a window gives the impression you’re presently at home. You can set this up via a timer, motion sensor or by using smart devices nowadays. Another good idea is to keep each entrance and exit of your home and property, such as a garage, well lit. Make sure your neighborhood roads are well lit and report any streetlights that may be out. Criminals like to strike in low lit areas. Keep your yard kept up too. A tidy and well lit yard makes it harder for a burglar to hide away for an unpleasant surprise. • Property Make sure to always keep the door locked in your home, car or any other pieces of property such as a garage or shed. When going to unlock the door, have your keys already in your hand. That way to save time and make a quick entrance. Any time left lingering searching for keys, gives criminals the opportunity to strike. Keep valuables out of view from windows and blinds drawn. A home security checklist can come in handy too. Carry items like a purse or backpack close to your person. If you’re just carrying keys or a wallet, don’t put in your back pocket where it’s out of view and easy for pick pockets to take advantage of. Instead keep it in your front pockets or inside your coat. • Security System There are many forms of security systems nowadays. As mentioned before, motion-sensor lights are a good way to give the notion that you’re present on the property whether you really are or not. Some lights even have cameras you can tap into via wi-fi. Similar to this, there are doorbell cameras with speakers too. There are several camera systems you can have installed outside as well as inside your home. Not all systems have to have some extensive set up since there are some all-in-one cameras you can rely one that are pretty much plug and play. Think suspicious activity is happening inside your home while away? You can even set up a hidden camera to record the misdoings. There are dozens of companies you can refer to as well that will set up an alarm system for your home that may even alert police when away. Don’t want to take that option but still want an alarm to sound off? There are individual alarms you can set up at each entrance that activate when they sense vibrations or via when certain magnets get separated. https://www.citizensfightingback.com

Truckers lead a difficult life. It is sometimes a dangerous one as well. They are mostly independent businessmen and women travelling long distances under heavy time and economic restraints. The truck stop has for decades provided a place to rest, to sleep, to eat, to catch up and socialize, to make contacts and just be in contact with others. A 2020 survey of over 447 truckers found that more than 21 percent said they were a victim of crime which 42% of those victims were of violent crimes including assault, rape, and robbery. They continue to drive past the point of feeling "safe and alert" because they cannot find a place to stop and sleep at night. The survey also found that drivers often resort to parking in unsafe areas, such as along the shoulders of highways and on highway on-ramps, if they can't find a place at a rest area. Tragically there have been at least two reported deaths in 2020 due to this. However there are some tools one can use towards crime prevention and better to protect themselves with. These products range from personal defense, property protection, products to help towards making situations a little easier. It’s always good to keep a flashlight on hand and the 1200 Lumen LED flashlight is a perfect choice. It has an innovative lens that extends to narrow the blaze of light over 1,500 feet. It also includes a SOS signaling setting. Another option is the very handy 8-N-1 Car Charger Power Bank Auto Safety Tool. It’s equipped with a 120 lumen flashlight and a red flashing light for signaling. You can use the built-in magnet to mount to your car and use the adjustable neck to aim the light in the needed position. You can plug this tool into your cigarette lighter. Once it’s charged and if you need to use it as a power bank, the USB port is easy to locate due to the glow-in-the-dark band. It can be a real life saver too thanks to the seat belt cutter and glass breaking hammer. Worried about the safety of your valuables when you leave your truck? You can easily hide certain items in diversion safes. The burglar will never have a clue what’s right under their nose. The diversions safes come in a large variety that won’t make them seem out of place in a truck such as the Liquid Wrench, Lubricant, Engine and Brake Cleaners and plenty of drink cans and bottles that you can choose from. The Nap Alarm is one of the simplest yet effective tools to detect and defeat falling asleep at the wheel. Hook it over your ear and if your hear nods as in falling asleep a loud alarm sounds. If the trucking company doesn’t offer one already, a trucker can install the 1080p HD Dash Cam with a Built In DVR. It records video at 1080p 30 frames per second with its 170° ultra-wide angle lens. It also kicks in when motion is detected. It has a rechargeable battery that can be recharged via the cigarette lighter and only takes 3 hours to fully charge. Once you need to review the footage, you can hook it up this up to a HDMI TV using the mini HDMI out port. Installation is very easy since it’s just a suction cup. There are several pepper sprays a trucker can use. One good option is the Pepper Shot Tri Pack. It comes with one 2oz can of pepper spray for home use and two ½ oz cans – one with a visor clip to keep in your vehicle and the other has a keychain you can use to connect with your truck keys. Each cannister packs 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units and the effects can last up to 45 minutes. Effects include: - coughing and choking - temporary blindness - pain and irritation The 2 oz sprays can reach up to 12 feet while the ½ oz sprays can reach up to 8 feed. Pepper Spray also doesn’t cause any permanent damage. There are several model of stun guns you could choose from as well. The Bouncer is a wonderful choice if you want a stun gun and striking weapon all wrapped into one. It unleashes 100 million volts and its 22 inch aircraft aluminum reach makes it a force to be recon with. It also includes a 280 lumen flashlight and removable glass breaker. Stun guns and pepper sprays are not legal in some states. Check with your local police department first before you get this safety kit. https://citizensfightingback.com/

Personal security is something all women should be familiar with. Pepper spray protection can save your life and is a very good idea to keep it on you at all times. However, there are many things you should know about pepper spray and you might even consider taking a training class or get information on how to prepare yourself to use it. This might sound silly but after the first time you spray it incorrectly, it won’t sound so silly after all. Pepper spray protection canisters, a.k.a OC, come from chili peppers. This type of spray is not the same thing as mace chemical. It is important that you understand the affects. Pepper spray is an inflammatory and it works instantaneously upon making contact with mucus tissues like the eyes, nose and mouth. Mace can take up to 5 seconds before it can go into effect on an attacker. When pepper spray is sprayed on an attacker it will cause blood pressure to increase and the heart to beat faster. It will cause the attacker to begin coughing and choking and possible even vomit. If it’s sprayed into the eye area, it can even cause temporary blindness. All membranes will swell to the point that the attacker can only breathe. They will be entirely disabled. Personal security is very important but get familiar with how to operate the product properly first. Because of the severity of this type of defense mechanism it would be wise to seek training so you know how to use it properly. Proper use starts the moment you grab for the spray and intend to use it. The canister needs to be facing in the right direction so you don't spray yourself and there might even be a safety latch you need to undo first. When you consider pepper spray protection it is important to be able to react quickly. For example, if it remains at the bottom of your purse, you could never have the opportunity to use it on the assailant in time. Also, many people are afraid to use their pepper spray. These two elements are the primary reason why some form of pepper spray training is very important. An attacker can be stopped dead in their tracks instantly when you use a canister of pepper spray on them properly. Just spraying for one quick second can stop an attacker for over 30 to 45 minutes. You also don't have to worry about causing permanent damage to a person when you spray them. It is safe to use and designed to temporarily disable an attacker for personal security if you feel threatened. However, there are possible disadvantages to pepper spray protection you must be aware of. Pepper spray may not work in all cases. It is common for people who are on heavy drugs such as psychotics or under some type of influence to not be as affected by pepper spray. They might show the physical signs of the pepper spray swelling up their skin and other symptoms of the spray working, but they will not be sufficiently affected. This means an attacker under an influence will feel no pain and they will not be totally disabled. That is why when you seek pepper spray training you also might consider learning a few basic self defense moves as well. The last thing you would want is for an attacker who does not feel the pain of pepper spray to get a hold of the OC canister and use it on you. There are also laws and regulations regarding pepper spray protection also. You will need to check on your state’s and city’s laws regarding pepper spray use. Even though you have pepper spray on you for personal security, improper use could result in serious consequences such as fines and possible jail time. The entire purpose of pepper spray is designed for protection and self-defense and is a crime to use it for any other reason other than that. Children could be injured if they got a hold of your pepper spray canister too. If you cannot prove to a police officer you were defending yourself when you used it you could risk getting arrested. In conclusion, getting proper training could give you a better understanding of the effects a pepper spray causes, help you better prepared on using pepper spray and be aware of the disadvantages in certain scenarios. Mace and pepper spray are both excellent personal protection safety sprays that offer portability combined with tremendous effectiveness. Both security sprays are loosely regulated and are legal in almost every state, providing a self defense alternative to those who may not be able to carry other protection devices such as stun guns or Tasers, or who is not permitted by law to own a firearm. While similar in philosophy, there are differences between mace and pepper spray, causing each to have varied levels of effectiveness and slightly different first aid protocols. Mace : The difference between mace and pepper spray begin with its ingredients. Mace is an aerosol irritant and inflammatory substance designed to cause extreme pain to the eyes. It is a one percent solution of CN tear gas particles suspended in a volatile carrier base. The particulate matter is designed to cling to skin and clothing, providing ongoing agony for the recipient. Since Mace is particulate matter, it does not dissipate completely when it is dry. Rewetting the affected area can reignite the burning and rekindle the effectiveness of the product. First aid usually involves flushing the area heavily with fresh water to remove the particles. Those who have been sprayed with Mace will experience a tremendous burning of the eyes, forcing them shut. The skin around the eyes may burn, particularly if Mace has been applied to the skin. The nasal passages and lungs will become irritated, causing difficulty breathing. This creates a panicky feeling and induces a dependency on others, making it easy to then overpower someone who has been sprayed with Mace. The effects of Mace can last for several hours, which is one difference between Mace and pepper spray. Most states require that citizens participate in a class on the use of Mace prior to purchasing it. Pepper Spray : Again, the ingredients play a difference between mace and pepper spray. Pepper spray, also known as OC spray, is a liquid that is derived from hot peppers, and then suspended in an oily carrier. The oil causes the hot pepper mixture to cling to the skin, irritating it and causing discomfort. While there is a difference between mace and pepper spray when it comes to ingredients, pepper spray has many of the same effects as Mace, including burning eyes, irritated skin, and difficulty breathing. It will cause the nose to run. In order to remove pepper spray from the skin, the affected area needs to be washed in a mild soap or detergent or wiped with Vaseline. Fresh air will help dissipate the effects over time, and once deployed, pepper spray loses its volatility. This is another difference between mace and pepper spray, as the former is designed to cling onto the skin, while the other dissipates. There typically are no special training requirements for citizens wishing to purchase pepper spray, which is another difference between mace and pepper spray. The power of the safety sprays plays a role in the difference between mace and pepper spray. The effects of pepper spray, while strong, are not as crippling initially as Mace. Each product affects different people in various ways, though, so what works well on one person may not work as well on another. Both products also offer limited effectiveness on those who are mentally ill or under the influence of narcotics or alcohol. In general, pepper spray has a greater history of effectiveness in those circumstances. Either product will provide the user with a reliable, easy to use method of providing personal protection. Pepper spray has rapidly become the most widely available on the market, but there is still a good case for the use of Mace.

Personal safety has become such a fundamental part of our day-to-day lives. It is an unsafe world out there. Violence and crime are on an all time high, be it in a metropolitan city or in a small town. In situations like these one cannot expect to find instantaneous help from security guards or the cops. It is thus better to keep yourself equipped with materials that would help you get rid of the unwanted elements of the society. It is wiser to take immediate steps to protect ourselves rather than be vulnerable to these attacks and give in to physical injury or loss of valuables. The equipment used more frequently these days for self defense is stun guns and pepper sprays. This also proves to be a huge boon to women who lead single lives and have to travel at unusual times of the day. These women are the major target of groups that employ themselves in unscrupulous crimes like rapes and even gang rapes. Stun guns and pepper sprays are the most famous handy self defense gadgets which are readily available in the market. Moreover, we also can make our own stun guns at home. A stun gun is an equipment that immobilizes the assailant. It transfers high voltage current onto the body of the attacker. Although the amperage in the stun gun is considerably low, it does not cause any permanent damage to the attacker. The stun gun is ideally aimed at the muscular parts of the body like the buttocks, thigh, and shoulders. The basics of a stun gun includes the passage of current via the muscles at a high pulse rate thus causing the muscles to work quite fast and lose out all the energy also reducing the blood sugar. As a result of energy loss, the muscle movements signaled by neurological impulses get interrupted thus causing disorientation in the attacker getting him confused and shocked for a few minutes. Interestingly enough, the stun gun user does not receive any shock even if they touch the attacker after giving the shock. The advantage of a stun gun is that you can be rest assured it does not cause any permanent effects and is not deadly. It does not even affect the vital organs of the body like the heart. They come in varying shapes and sizes. The most modern stun guns are compact and easy to carry. They are sometimes manufactured in the shape of a lipstick, cell phones, lipstick, flashlight, penlights, and so on. They also have power options. However, stun guns can prove to be dangerous to people with poor heart conditions. Stun guns have a disadvantage of being misused by the bad guys themselves or by kids on innocent people for cheap fun. Pepper spray is yet another effective but safe self defense equipment that is frequently used against ill-doers. It is a canister that contains a derivative of cayenne pepper. It is stored in an oil based solution. It causes a sting in the eye and the skin and may cause temporary blindness. It also affects the nasal cavity and the mouth. The application of the pepper spray results in the occurrence of swelling and inflammation and gives rise to severe burning sensation. Pepper sprays are comparatively safer than gases or mace that can cause permanent irreparable damage. The only precaution to be taken is that the nozzle of the can is facing the right direction. Also one needs to be really alert and must have presence of mind in order to rightly take advantage of a pepper spray. Sometimes people under heavy drugs do not get affected by pepper sprays. This works at our disadvantage. It is imperative to know other self defense techniques and not depend on just the pepper spray. An attacker under the dose of drugs may show reactions but may not feel the pain and instead might grab the can from your hands and use it on you. Improper use of pepper spray may even land you in jail. It should also be kept far away from the reach of children.

Carjacking is a horrible crime that involves the theft of a car while the vehicle is still occupied. Every year, there are thousands of drivers who experience this frightening and sometimes life-threatening occurrence. Normally, the carjacker will have a weapon with them and force the driver out of their vehicle with a knife or even at gunpoint. Carjacking is an offense that can take place at any time, any location, and by any person or group with various situations considered more common for the act to occur. The first step towards prevention is to get familiar with the most notable threats of carjacking. Usually, intersections during nighttime traffic and parking lots are the most frequent places where carjacking takes place. Luxury cars and SUVs are some of the most popular targets for carjackers, who receive a higher value when these vehicles are later sold or sent to a "chop shop" for parts. However, any car has the potential to become carjacked, as some criminals are simply looking for a night out on the town. It is important to remember that carjackers thrive on surprising their victims and taking advantage of those who are not attentive and alert at all times. There are countless victims who report that they were unaware of the carjacker's presence until they appeared at their car window or door. In order to prevent carjacking of your vehicle, it is suggested to exercise a high level of common sense. Parking is an important part of preventing a carjacking, including placing cars in a well-lit location when planning on leaving a site after dark. This practice ultimately increases the level of awareness for a driver. Additionally, isolated parking spaces and spots situated close to a wall, tall bushes, or trees should be avoided. It is better for women who drive alone to park in an attended garage or to use valet services. Before walking into a car garage or parking lot, assess your surroundings and pay attention to people sitting in their vehicles. If a stranger approaches you, change directions right away and go towards a busy area. When approaching your vehicle, it is suggested to glance under, around, and inside of the car. If you need to load packages into your car, make sure not to turn your back. When it is safe, open the door, enter quickly, and lock the doors. Immediately start your car and drive away, as lingering in a parking lot only place you in more danger for a carjacking. When driving in the city, keep the doors locked and the windows rolled up. If you must stop in traffic, make sure to leave room to maneuver your vehicle and escape if a threat should arise. When faced with a carjacking, never fall into the trap of becoming a kidnapping victim. It is suggested to drop your car keys, followed by running and screaming for help. Unfortunately, some people are forced into the situation of driving with the carjacker as passenger. There were a few instances where victims have crashed their car into a busy intersection so that someone would come to the rescue, as well as calling the police. Some people equip their vehicle with self-defense weapons, such as personal alarms, stun guns, and pepper spray to increase their level of safety while driving. Self-defense items should be used to protect your well-being and not defend your car. If you are ever approached by a carjacker, it is recommended to never resist the surrender of your vehicle. When carjackers demand your keys or money, you should comply without resistance. In the end, it all comes down to what is more important to you – a replaceable car or an irreplaceable life. https://citizensfightingback.com/

High school to University is a major change for young adults. No longer are they part of a very structured environment, from the strict rules at High School to the rules you have in place at home, they are now "free" in a sense. How will they handle their new world? Will they be prepared? It is imperative to begin this as soon as possible. They will be on their own and you should prepare them as much as possible. You should check with your campus authorities first as to what methods of non-lethal self-defense are allowed. Is your child permitted to carry Mace, Pepper Spray or a Stun Gun? Are they allowed to carry stun guns in their purses or pockets? Have the college clearly detail the security system and processes currently in place? Are parking lots and grounds patrolled during the day and night? Where can your child run to if there is a problem on campus? Make sure your children are aware where the security office is located? If at all possible, see if you can show them around their dorm in the months before college begins. You can both get a feel for the layout of the dorm and see where the entrances and exits are. You can explore the different wings and corridors so your child will be less likely to become lost. This is especially important if you are from a more rural area and your child is attending a major university. The college they are attending may have tens of thousands of students. It can be an overwhelming place if they aren't fully expecting a location vast enough to accommodate this number. Be sure to clearly discuss facts on peer behavior. It is highly unlikely that parties will ever be supervised thus anything thing lost or stolen will be gone for good. Likewise other young adults in attendance may or may not be students at the school. There are accounts for both male and female students who have been robbed, attacked, or raped after overindulging in alcohol. Be sure to clearly discuss facts on peer behavior.
