NONLINEAR FUNCTION

I am really glad to talk to you - finally. Maybe I noticed your presence for the first time in 2015, but did not pay much attention. Sorry about that, the city is distracting my focus, sometimes in a positive sometimes in a negative way. I remember the summer of 2016, not sure which exhibition you held, but you've clearly made an impression. Not so much because of the content but rather thanks to social function and position you occupy in the city. Let me explain: you are placed in a public space, which makes you accessible all day long. You are a special [decent size] glass box for presentation of projects confirmed by Rathaus Tiergarten. Ah, what a long application process this was for me. Other reasons why I find you sexy are:

1. The natural transparency of yours, I feel like you disclose everything – of course there were strange projects inside you. For example the smoking body sculpture made from oversized cigarettes. Am I right to think that sometimes feel naked and powerless?

2. The potential you have. By that I mean that you can communicate to a lot of different people. Wow, I wish it was as simple for me as it is for you. To stay only in one place and to share one message every month. What are people responses?

You may have noticed that I am putting a bit of honey around your mouth. This is because July is 'my' month and I would like that you are with us in this – which we called 'Nonlinear function'. Well we had a short introduction in February this year with a nomadicArt project. Did you like our TV installation? I think the archive footage from Moabit in 50s, 60s and 70s was really nice, a restauration of Berlin. How old are you anyways?

Maybe I should explain some more: I invited Melanie Garland, an artist and my precious friend, to create an exhibition on a topic of a migration. We understand migration as a general concept which manifests in several areas – such as biology and politics. As Melanie has an extensive experience thanks to her art-, anthropological-, original approach to this matter, and I am a freelance curator in Berlin; after a broad discussion about political humans and climate change; we decided to call the exhibition a 'Nonlinear function'. As you can see we chose several objects as representations of different aspects of migration.

1. A fishing net, which comes from Chile, as a symbol of globalised world and exploitative labor.

2. Plants, which come from research project by FU ‘Bringing Biodiversity Science’ [funded by Federal Ministry of Education and Research], as an exposition of strength and vulnerability of nature. 

3. Drawings of currents and landscapes, as a representation of the concept of migration on an abstract level.

4. Water as a symbol of life.

We are aware that this exhibition is an experiment and you look like a laboratory. Are the plants going to survive this hot summer in the city? Will there be someone willing to join us watering them?

In mathematics, a nonlinear function describes a relationship between two sets or values. Here, the name is meant to represent the complicated relationship between humans and nature. We hope that this function will take a shape that is beneficial to both items related – nature and humans.

NICHTLINEARE FUNKTION

Ich freue mich sehr, mit dir sprechen zu können - endlich. Vielleicht habe ich dich zum ersten Mal im Jahr 2015 bemerkt, aber nicht viel Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Das tut mir leid. Die Stadt lenkt mich ab, manchmal positiv, manchmal negativ. Ich erinnere mich an den Sommer 2016 und bin mir nicht sicher, welche Ausstellung du durchgeführt hast, aber du hast einen Eindruck hinterlassen. Nicht so sehr aufgrund der Inhalte, sondern aufgrund der sozialen Funktion und des Ortes, den du in der Stadt einnimmst. Lass es mich erklären: du befindest dich an einem öffentlichen Ort, der zu jeder Zeit zugänglich ist. Du bist eine Glasvitrine in respektabler Größe, du präsentierst Projekte, die vom Rathaus Tiergarten bestätigt wurden. Ach, welch langer Bewerbungsprozess das für mich war. 

Ein paar Gründe, warum ich dich sexy finde:

1. Deine dir innewohnende Transparenz. Es scheint, als gäbst alles von dir preis. Selbstverständlich, hinter deinen gläsernen Wänden waren manchmal seltsame Projekte, zum Beispiel die rauchende Körperskulptur aus übergroßen Zigaretten. Gehe ich recht in der Annahme, dass du dich manchmal nackt und machtlos fühlst?

2. Das Potenzial, das du hast. Ich meine, du kannst mit so vielen verschiedenen Menschen kommunizieren. Wow, ich wünschte, das würde mir auch so leichtfallen.  Nur an einem Ort zu bleiben und jeden Monat eine Nachricht zu teilen. Was sind die Antworten der Leute?

 Du hast vielleicht bemerkt, dass ich dir ein bisschen Honig um den Mund schmiere. Das liegt daran, dass der Juli "mein" Monat ist und ich möchte, dass du, mit uns, ein Teil hiervon bist; wir haben es „nonlinear function“ genannt (dt. Nonlineare Funktion). Nun, wir haben uns bereits im Februar diesen Jahres im Rahmen eines nomadicArt-Projektes kurz vorgestellt. Hat dir unsere TV-Installation gefallen? Ich finde das Archivmaterial von Moabit in den 50er, 60er und 70er Jahren wirklich schön; ein Einblick in die Wiederherstellung Berlins. Wie alt bist du überhaupt?

 Vielleicht sollte ich noch etwas erklären: Ich habe Melanie Garland, eine Künstlerin und meine wertvolle Freundin, eingeladen, eine Ausstellung im Themenfeld der Migration zu gestalten. Unter Migration verstehen wir ein Gesamtkonzept, das sich in unterschiedlichen Bereichen manifestiert - etwa in der Biologie und in der Politik. Da Melanie durch ihre künstlerische sowie anthropologische Erfahrung und ethnographische Arbeit bereits einen originären Blick auf dieses Thema entwickelt hat und ich als freiberufliche Kuratorin bereits verschiedene Projekte in Berlin zu z.T. unterschiedlichen Themen organisiert habe, hatten wir zunächst (wieder einmal) eine breite Debatte über Politik, die Rolle des Menschen und den Klimawandel. Am Ende haben wir uns beschlossen, die Ausstellung "Nichtlineare Funktion" zu nennen. Wie du siehst, haben wir Objekte ausgewählt, die verschiedene Aspekte der Migration repräsentieren.

1. Ein aus Chile stammendes Fischernetz als Symbol der globalisierten Welt und der ausbeuterische Arbeit.

2. Pflanzen, die Teil eines vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung geförderten Forschungsprojekts der FU Berlin waren („Bringing Biodiversity Science“), als Zeichen der Stärke und Verwundbarkeit der Natur.

3. Zeichnungen von Strömungen und Landschaften als Repräsentation des Migrationsbegriffs auf abstrakter Ebene.

4. Wasser als Symbol für das Leben.

 Wir sind uns bewusst, dass diese Ausstellung ein Experiment ist und du wie ein Labor aussiehst. Werden die Pflanzen diesen heißen Sommer in der Stadt überleben? Wird es jemanden geben, der bereit ist, sie mit uns zu gießen?

 In der Mathematik beschreibt eine nichtlineare Funktion die Beziehung zwischen zwei Mengen oder Werten. Der Name soll hier die komplizierte Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur darstellen. Wir hoffen, dass diese Funktion eine Form annimmt, die sowohl für die Natur als auch für den Menschen von Vorteil ist.
