what is the origin of fire in Greek mythology?
So I went down a rabbit hole learning the origins of Hermes, and it says that he created fire which really confused me because Hephaestus was around before Hermes, and I thought Prometheus created fire to give it to humans. So you better believe I did some digging and I think I have a theory, but if there’s any professionals or someone that actually knows what they’re talking about please let me know. I’m really curious about the explanation.
So it says Hephaestus never actually created fire and in mythology it said that he would use volcanos natural fire for blacksmithing. My theory is that when Hermes was one day old he was the first to ever create man-made fire. (though technically he was a non-immortal god at the time and less than a day old). After he impressed Zeus and become an immortal God, a part of the big 12 he told Hephaestus about how to make fire. So when Prometheus went searching for Hephaestus and Athena, and he begged them to teach him how to forage stuff so that he could teach the humans so they can protect themselves from all the animals that his brother made. They agreed to teach Prometheus then Prometheus taught all of that to the so humans can protect themselves. But after Prometheus helped the humans trick Zeus so that they could have better food than what Zeus was letting them have as punishment, Zeus took either the knowledge of how to make fire or the ability to make fire from the Earth and put it in Mount Olympus locking it away, snuck into Olympus and stole the fire back and gave it back to the people he got punished I believe by being chained to a mountain, where eagles would go eat his liver every day for the rest of his immortal life.
Does anyone actually know the origin of fire in Greek mythology or is it just inconsistent and or Homer make some stuff up?
