happy august!!! i had a really weird july y'all!!
lots of weird stuff happening irl so i did take a little over a week off of hobby learning to spiritually dedicate myself to Specific Non-Hobby time (which was sort of restful, but mostly difficult re commitment).
ended up binging a lot of language learning content during the weekends!! like look at those crazy increases!!! that's 103 hours babeyyyyyy!!! lingotrack is showing me at 49 hours over the last seven days that's insane!!!!!!
also ended up being my strongest month of cello practice ever in the history of my entire life!!!!!!
also also had a great social life this month, house parties and local events and several solid friendly acquaintances.
oh also i should mention i hit 1250 cumulative hours in spanish & also like 1hr in chess playing idk.

Another textbook rec from me is Spin Dynamics: Basics of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance by Malcolm H. Levitt. It's great bc not only does it explain NMR in depth, it also gives a very concise overview of magnetism in general and the quantum mechanics necessary to understand NMR and I'm having a field day today reading it 🥹💖 Although keep in mind that it's a little advanced and I wouldn't recommend it to a high schooler for example (unless you like a good challenge I guess?)

i'm halfway through level six in the dreaming spanish roadmap!!
cool so this is a long post! i put my notes under the four domains of language learning bc there's a lot going on, but tl;dr i still have a long way to go to understand casual native speakers & every other domain is on the backburner til i see strong improvement there.
reading
so i'm right around 900k words read! am struggling with some primary school kids books, and occasionally hit fully incomprehensible sections of dialogue-heavy webtoons (manhwa).
i had some experience in spanish before starting up the 1500 hours of CI project, and believed that i would be able make quick/easy progress with reading (and speaking, notes below). not so! it's been very slow going tbh.
my average is about four hours a month for reading, estimated by average reading speeds for foreign language learners.
writing
not really thinking about this until i get into novels for adults, but i've been fantasizing about some fun short story projects. it's good to have dreams :)
listening
i'm at a story- to comfortable-level of comprehension for all my content. i occasionally dip into gist-level of comprehension for my crosstalk conversations.
i'm officially done with all made-for-learners content! i did this once around 600 hours, but then realized that nonfiction & youtube edutainment is not as useful as fiction or multi-person podcasts for building conversational fluidity.
there's a lot of dubbed TV & native content that i have bookmarked for later, as i would need a higher level of comprehension to really enjoy the media.
speaking
kind of similar to writing! i'm not really thinking about this until i'm able to understand native conversations at a much higher level.
i have considered taking classes - free moocs or paid 1:1s with tutors - but i simply do not think it's worth my energy (been there done that, simply not enough improvement for the high cost to my time)
#⏳#nowtoboldlygo posts#spanish notes#spanish update for future reference#next post will be the enddddd!!!#sort of i'll keep tracking & writing updates ofc#dreaming spanish

I come across a great site to learn coding, I don’t see a lot of people talking about it tho. (There is an app too!)
This site has python 101 for free (and many another, tho course from 102 and up aren’t free)

Its has a cute design and great at explaining the small details that some teachers don’t explain ✨
There is also many exercises in each chapter of the lessons.
You can check more about it from there official site ✨
Happy coding you all 🫶🏻
#coding notes#not sure how robust the free version is (especially comp to other resources)#but bookmarking for later!!!!

i'm learning chess!!!!
and writing an update post because i love thoughtful structured learning!!!!
i found a lot of semi-unintelligible advice about learning chess, and ended up starting with an oft-recommended website lichess.org. was familiar with all the fundamentals, but learned new stuff at the intermediate level!! some of the advanced lessons were true puzzlers.
easy next steps are the practice & puzzle sections, no idea what to do after that! probably simply play chess??

I believe one of the most underrated math/coding websites of all time is projecteuler.net. As one of the top 2000 ranked in this website, I feel like I can say just how amazing this website is. Here is a list of everything I love about it.
Well thought out idea: This website is full of math problems in which (almost) all of them can only be solved by code, but you cannot just use brute force. You need to use the best of math and CS to solve the problems.
Good problems, and not just a couple. This website has >900 well thought out problems that can be solved in under a minute even on incredibly slow computers
Variance in difficulty: There are problems that will take you under 5 minutes to complete, and others will take you weeks without making a lick of progress (looking at you #177). Even if you don't know anything bout number theory or CS, there will be problems you can solve and learn new concepts with. Just dost skip to the recent problems, they're VERY hard.
Price: I won't sugarcoat it. It's free. Completely. No need to pay for problems. No missing features. No ads. Anyone can make a free account and have the exact same experience. This might be it's biggest selling point in my opinion.
These problems have made me spend hundreds of hours confused and dumbfounded until I find a solutions. Now, there are definitely sites you can find that will give you the answers But don't use them for solutions or else you'll be cursed for life. They're good places if you want to see how others solved it, but it is 233168% better to just skip on these websites and solve them yourselves. Even after all of this time, I have never copy-pasted an answer, purely because I prefer the struggle, and I believe that I learn more by finding out the necessary info myself.
Overall, stop reading this and go to the website (projecteuler.net). It deserves all the praise it can get. I hope you enjoy the problems like I do :)

it made for a very enjoyable practice week!!!

it's hard because it was an unpleasant experience both times, like pretty intense good & bad but the good did not outweigh the bad, or return me to a calm equilibrium. and i want to sail!!!! but just Not Like That.
was very brave & politely declined an ongoing invitation for sailing, now a nervous wreck
#nowtoboldlygo posts#sailing notes#a lot like going out drinking tbh where you're having an absolutely great time and also absolutely miserable at the same time for hours

I feel like finding editions of books in your target languages should be easier than it is.
Recently found a few German editions of contemporary books I love in order to help with my reading comprehension and vocabulary skills… but I am challenged to find French editions.
And getting ahold of a physical copy of the books, without having to travel to France or Germany, seems even harder.
