another thing I forgot to talk about that I’m losing my mind about is the absolute psychotic genius of Jenny Han putting Golden and Red as the songs in the trailer. STICK WITH ME.

If you were on team Conrad at any point in 2023 or 2024 and you’re on social media then you would’ve seen the countless edits of Belly and Conrad to ‘Golden’. Like, I’m pretty sure that those edits of Belly turning to Conrad in the hotel room in s2e8 with golden light washing over them to the bridge of Golden lives in my head somewhere.

And Jenny’s on social media. So she’s seen this right. And in this 2023 context, in which Taylor and Joe Alwyn are still together and Lover is still a beautiful love album, this song is perfect for Bonrad. Because Taylor has experienced love that was ‘black and white’ and like Red before which is Jeremiah in this context, and it wasn’t good, and now she’s got golden love, which is Joe and that’s perfect. And editors have basically applied this to Belly and Conrad’s relationship. Like Taylor and Joe are golden and in love and they’re perfect, and Belly and Conrad had a golden, perfect love too.

But then the context changes. Taylor and Joe break up. TTPD. Lover is basically in denial and delusional and not real love, bc Taylor admits that even then, their love was flawed. So Golden love isn’t what’s real and what’s perfect, bc that’s proven to be wrong too. So there’s no right love and wrong love, bc if Taylor was wrong about love being golden instead of being red or black and white, then that whole logic fades.

Then comes the trailer. Some people are pissed off bc it almost seems like an attack, at first. The Conrad girlies have associated him with Golden and now it’s a Jelly song? What?

Remember the context and the fact that Jenny is a huge Swiftie. In having Belly associate Jeremiah with a song that we now associate with not real love, and being delusional, she is literally saying that Belly and Jere’s love rn is an ILLUSION. Bc love isn’t just Golden. It can be Red too, bc Taylor was wrong about love just being Golden and that’s why Red goes to Conrad, bc it’s all about this never ending passionate love that became so deeply a part of you it can’t be let go and you can’t help but crave and cling to it.

She’s basically foreshadowing a Bonrad ending in the trailer like ohhh myyy goddd, and in such a subtle and complex way.

In honour of me absolutely losing my mind over the last episode, let me give some songs (mostly Taylor Swift) I think are going to be in the next few episodes:

I am of the opinion that if they played this right after Conrad does the forehead kiss bye bye birdie it was worth loving you scene and then drives off and like cries a bit that first of all it would be lethal and second of all I wouldn’t be able to see bc I’d be crying too hard.

Guilty as sin

I know in the books she has a dream of like a storm and Susannah calling to her and Conrad to come home and then they don’t and it all gets scary blah blah and I get how that’s representative of their relationship and how they went too far and maybe should’ve paused for a bit while Conrad was going through the death of his mum etc etc but if there was some scene where instead she dreamed of the wedding and then at the very end it was Conrad at the altar to this song, it would be amazing.

Alternatively, after everything’s broken off and she’s in Paris it would be amazing if she was dreaming about him then or seeing him in other people, which brings me to my next song. I guess for seeing him in others, songs like Is it over now? could work too especially like ‘I see your profile and your smile on unsuspecting waiters’, but I feel like the vibe of that song wouldn’t work for them in Paris bc he literally has told her how he feels, and it was her who left.

Fresh out the slammer

For when she leaves Jere and moves on. Maybe like directly after they call off the wedding and she just gets in the car and drives kinda like she did at the end of the grad party when she cried to drivers license. Or maybe everyone else leaves and she just swims?

Maybe even when she’s coming back from Paris to the US and she’s gonna get back with Conrad. That would go really well with the “now pretty baby I’m running back home to you” and the bridge too.

Peter could also work for those break up crying vibes.

You are in love

For the Valentine’s Day flashback. I feel like it’s such a deep and perfect song for it. Like imagine the deep looks and kisses under the stars to it, ugh it would be perfect.

with Belly in Paris and from Conrad’s pov. Specifically ‘I have a dream you’re doing new shit you find a new girl blah blah we never painted by numbers. And it would’ve been sweet if it could’ve been me.’

And then eventually she picks up the letters and begins writing back. Also: the letters HAVE to be in Conrad’s voice. And include her soliloquy afterwards and then her letters read in her voice.

On the drive out from Cousins maybe. Or she’s on the flight to Paris and deletes all the posts of her and Jere.

Belly looking back at her relationship with Jere. Could even be post her getting back with Conrad and she’s just looking at photos and going damn. Thank god I didn’t go through with that.

SOOOO BELLY. “If they like you, they’ll just lie to themselves.” Hello?? Could be another liek crying crash out after the wedding. Or maybe like Belly crying in the shower trying to convince herself to go through with the wedding even though she doesn’t want to. Or her doing her make up for it or something.

For when Bonrad get back together like imagine the love struck looks, being shy and taking it slow and then ‘honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?’ Bc they can’t help it!!!

I think it’s confirmed that Jere does go to Paris and meets up with Belly. And I feel like this song would be so good after they’ve kinda met up and smoothed things over and then he leaves. And she looks at him walking away and know bow he walks and what cologne he wears and all that shit but is like yep it’s all good, we’re just friends now.

Betty

When Conrad shows up at her graduation after she comes back from Paris. “So I showed up at your party, will you have me? Will you love me?” I do not wanna hear the ‘all your stupid friends’ bit, bc Conrad is not like that, that is all James the female manipulator final boss.

I think there are a ton of songs that they could play over the top of Conrad and Belly falling back in love, but we genuinely don’t know if they’re gonna give us an episode of that or just scam us and do an epilogue like what they did in the books sooo

Stay

Especially with how it’s almost canon that Bonrad have all the old love songs, this would be so Bonrad coded for them to be at their wedding, just like how it is in the books. Also it’s genuinely a lovely first dance song.

OMG THE MUSIC THIS EPISODE

I had a little bingo of songs I thought would be in this season, and I ticked heaps off.

The use of loml at the end was fabulous.

BUTTT HOT TAKE: it would’ve been absolutely unstoppable in the place of when the party’s over. Like we’ve already had that from the first season, and I get the callback, but everything is so different and I really think that loml would’ve had me screaming my head off.

Trust, I did scream when I heard the start of it, but I was so sad that when the party’s over was there. Like please stop this recycling of songs, they’ve had their moment, and there’s so many other amazing songs that could fit. Ofc I still love and trust Jenny with the music choices tho, and I think that this episode was beautiful.

We can’t be friends (wait for your love) and THE FUCKING BONRAD MONTAGE?! Excuse me??!!! Incredible.

Please stop the Belly hate!!

Like, I get it. I love Conrad too and his facial expressions and the fact that she rejected him hurt me as well, but let’s get some facts down straight ok??

1. She’s drunk and high at the same time, probably for the first time

She probably is just blurting out whatever comes through her brain, and the chemicals are making her feel stressed and her emotions are everywhere.

2. She’s still pissed at Jere for cheating

Put yourself in her shoes. She is actively trying to deny all feelings for Conrad and convince herself that Jere’s the right choice for her, even tho she’s getting smacked again and again in the face that Conrad is the right choice for her.

She literally just had a revelation that she still really loves Conrad and doesn’t really wanna get married to Jere, and she’s on her way to push this down by coming to find Jere on the beach and have a romantic moment with him to prove that he’s perfect and sweet and what she wants and needs. AND THEN CONRAD IS THERE. Like ofc from the start she’s going “Fuckkkkk nooooo”

And then when Conrad is saying “why are you marrying him when he cheated? What?” Of course she gets angry. Bc she’s still angry at Jere for cheating, she’s just pushed it down so much bc the crash with Steven shook her up so much and she didn’t want to lose something ‘good’ with him and have nothing like what happened with Conrad, where she ended up having beef with both boys and then Susannah died.

And she’s angry at him for all the shitty stuff he keeps doing. And she’s angry at herself for knowing that this life is not what she wants, and these decisions aren’t what she wants. To avoid being messy and dramatic, bc everything almost completely fell apart the last time stuff was messy and dramatic, she is willing to marry a manchild who cheated on her and who she doesn’t love.

Like is this clocking to you? To avoid causing drama in the family and not have people hate and judge her, BELLY IS WILLING TO SHOVE DOWN HER OWN FEELINGS AND MARRY SOMEONE CRAPPY!!!!

And so when Conrad says all this stuff that she has thought of, duh she attacks him and shoves it down, bc the fact that she’s making this horrific and harmful choice for herself to please everyone else is really hurting her, and of course that comes out when she’s drunk.

Not to mention the fact that she’s probably almost annoyed at the fact that Conrad still knows her. That he’s talking about all the stuff that’s been in her heart and this is another smack from the universe telling her that he’s the one for her, and it’s just too late.

3. Hurt people hurt people

Very self-explanatory. I’ve said it before, but she’s still so hurt that Jere cheated on her. Hurt that she can’t have what she wants with Conrad. Hurt that she knows what she wants, but she’s not going to do it. Hurt that she might hurt Jere who she still loves. Hurt of preempting at all of the fucking judgment and hate that is gonna come her way from everyone probably.

Please don’t hate on my girl Belly, ok? If you don’t understand why she’s been doing what she’s doing, it’s not that she’s a horrible person, you just don’t understand what she’s been through.

I mean, I would never be attracted to Jeremiah, and I think Belly has deluded herself into not seeing the real reason why she wants to get married so quickly (if they weren’t getting married, they’d break up, and they’re afraid they’d lose their family.) HOWEVER, I don’t like seeing Belly slander and “Conrad is better off without all of them” content. We don’t need to put him on that pedestal.

The reality is that he broke her heart and killed her love for him.

Anyone who has been through that knows that Connie absolutely needs to go through everything that he’s been going through since then if he wants even a chance at earning back her trust. He absolutely needs to pour his heart out and take whatever devastating reaction she gives him.

And, by the way, we should all know that when she said “you and I were never anything,” she was LYING. BELLY LIES ALL THE TIME. She does it to protect herself! Just like Conrad masks and shuts down in order to protect himself. The whole time they were together, he never told her he loved her! That wasn’t for her sake, it was for his! He was scared!

For Belly, Conrad is an emotional roller coaster. “He gives and then he takes away.” She got off the roller coaster. I get it. I’ve been in love like that. It’s a full-body experience, so it really is like being on a roller coaster all the time. Your body can only take so much turmoil before it has to start protecting itself. And it will do what it can to try to keep you from ever experiencing that again.

If Connie wants her back, he has to prove himself to be so consistently open and present and stable, that she starts seeing him in a completely different light. He has to bring her love back from the dead. And she has to be willing to let him do it! That’s a lot.

And we know they’re going to get there! So, trust the process. Trust Belly. She really is doing her best.

like he’s developed so much. the character arc is beautiful.

One of the big issues with Bonrad’s relationship the first time around was Conrad’s inability to show weakness around Belly and allow her to help him (his hero complex). It’s the reason why she freaks out at the funeral. Belly see Conrad accepting help from another girl and it feels like betrayal bc she wanted to help him so much and he never let her.

“I would have been there for you through everything.”

He even admitted to this last episode and we see him trying to change that. He tells her he got fired. He allowed her to see a more vulnerable unsure side of himself and she didn’t balk. She was able to make him laugh and reassure that he doesn’t need to be perfect.

The reason the tub scene is such a HUGE deal is Conrad actually lets Belly help him. Like yes maybe Conrad could have done that by himself but she wanted to help. She wanted to be there for him and unlike the past he actually lets her.

PLEASE. conrad loves belly soso much. he’s finding solutions for her, for her and jeremiah’s wedding. he’s fixing up the house for her, he is doing everything he can to make her happy. he is literally sacrificing everything he’s working towards for her, he yearns for her. he needs her. he has healthy food in the kitchen. he went to michael’s with her. he’s doing everything he can just for belly. belly is such an unreliable narrator so seeing what conrad sees… i am so proud of conrad. he’s in med school, he is in therapy, he is working on himself. he is TRYING. i’m so happy to say i’ve been team conrad since i watched season one, then i listened to the books. this man loves belly more than himself. the fact that he tells belly he doesn’t love her, and that she can be with jere… all so he can see her happy. conrad fisher, you are an angel. you are so loved. i would kill for you. jeremiah fisher, you are an evil blue eyed demon.

the most recent episode killed me in ways that i can’t even imagine. belly is so so beautiful in conrad’s pov(which she always is) but this pov? she was golden. for conrad, belly is the sun. for belly, conrad is the moon and stars. they’re soulmates, they’re equals. her inner child comes out around conrad, she doesn’t have to mother him. no one is parenting in their relationship. my heart breaks for conrad, he does have a hero complex but because he is the older sibling. he had jeremiah to deal with and take care of. he can’t help it, being the older sibling the hero complex comes naturally.

jeremiah DID NOT love her before she ‘turned pretty’. conrad has loved her since he didn’t even know what love felt like. it’s always been Belly and conrad. he sees her in such a beautiful light and always has.

i will always defend conrad fisher with my life. a man who yearns is a man who earns.

anyways…. when she was on top, his hand.. the “Oh, conrad.” when he bit her bottom lip. when he flipped her over, EVEN WITH HER MOM IN THE NEXT ROOM. the peach scene? he untucked his shirt to wipe her face. the intimacy in that scene alone? truly the man who can’t be MOVED!

Yes, it’s so true that especially in season 2, we saw that Conrad didn’t allow himself to be chosen by Belly, and after seeing season 3 episode 5, a lot more people will understand why, I hope.
