so was anyone gonna tell me Wish (2023) is a movie about how malicious the egotistic man can be as a mentor and as an all-powerful ruler? (The first sign of public dissent means the poc woman gets thrown to the wolves. It was all her idea, blame her, hate her!)

This movie is also about authoritarian regimes making communist revolutionaries disappear and granting a select few their privileges so they will function as the tools of oppression. How easy it is for a sad, isolated person to be taken in by someone who talks big about being able to grant your wishes, when they don't intend to do that. How magical the immigrant's dream is before the reality of survival catches up; then you realize years have passed and you have lost sight of the dream you came here for.

This is the most American immigrant dreamer movie I have ever seen, even if it is set in a Spanish-Arabic land far far away. The song lyrics sound like they were translated from a different original language. They broke a lot of cliches with this movie. Evil queen is a hulking guy. The short dude is an anxious, intelligent, caring tsundere. The savior witch sings the song of the revolution at her own public execution.

Anyway dictators are bad for a reason. The children built actual barricades, the Les Mis metaphor was not subtle at all. Genuinely do not understand why people hated this movie?

Dreaming is an act of courage.
