I never thought it would happen, but I have somehow reached 100 followers! It’s absolutely insane! I started this blog because I wanted to experiment writing a different character within the same franchise and I fell in love with Cressida more than I thought I would. She’s such a wonderful character with so much to give. But anyway, to celebrate getting to 100, I thought I’d do a quick follow forever sort of post to acknowledge the people who ought to be acknowledged!

“It better not be.”

And with what small smile she could offer him he smiled back. It was familiar, all of this, even though his mind had been toyed with so many times, made to hate her, to hate everything about her, this was comforting. As a matter of fact, maybe he was starting to see how it should truly be around her, how it should be truly be for him, for the real Peeta.

“You’re gonna have to stay here for a while. I’ll make sure they bring you food okay?”

“It won’t be six.”

She promised him, trying to give a small smile. Carefully Katniss moved to his side so they were pressed to one another and it didn’t take her long to feel comforted and calmed the moment his arms enveloped her. It was odd how after everything they had been through, he was still the only one who knew how to make her feel peace.

“I won’t do it again.”

Katniss replied in a light voice, though she could not promise she would never think of it again. Next time, though, she’d talk to him instead.

“If that’s all that matters to you at this point then you’re doing it all wrong. There are no heroes in this war. Be careful bud, that kind of thinking might just kill you.”

“maybe because i’ll be the one who marries katniss. and because i’m going to be remembered as a hero. not you. you’ll be remembered as a traitor.”

“Effie. Haymitch. Johanna. Annie. Maybe Cressida and Pollux. Then you.”

Peeta counted with his fingers, holding them up to show her. Seven. Seven people he had left. Seven people he knew he could trust. Seven out of thousands and thousands. Seven out of what used to be more before. Katniss had the same, probably. Maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. So could anyone really blame him for wanting to stop her from taking her life? From pushing down the count by another one?

“Seven, and I can’t let that turn to six. Especially not when it’s you. Come here.”

He urged softly, moving closer and pulling her gently to his arms. The only sense of comfort he can truly give her right now.

“Well you won’t. Not anymore.”

Even though a small part of her resented Peeta for not allowing her to go through with it, she was beginning to see the error of her ways. He was right in saying that they had all suffered and he was completely right to stop her. Everyone else was fighting through it while she’d simply tried to take the easy way out.

“I’m sorry.”

“I lost everything too.”

Most of them did. What happened, it left scars that would never heal, not just to Katniss, not just to Peeta, but to Annie, Johanna, everybody too. It would be hard to recover, and it seemed impossible, even, but people lose a lot and there should be no way but back up. What Katniss tried to do, it was the easy way out, and it was selfish of Peeta, but he knew he couldn't let her do that.

"But I can't lose you too."

The question pushed something inside of her, making the tears well up in her eyes and slip onto her cheeks. That was a question that she hadn’t addressed in her own head, mainly because she didn’t want to. She was angry and sad and frustrated and confused and lost. There were so many emotions going on in her head that it felt as though there was nothing.

“I lost everything, Peeta. But I…I feel numb.”

She could, and she might, but Peeta couldn’t let her kill herself anymore. He would have, a few days before today, but now he knew. Besides, was there really a point in wanting her dead anymore? With Snow gone, and now Coin, maybe things could really get back to the way they were, or the way they should be. But he also knew it was more than that. She lost Prim, so she’s practically lost everything she started this for. So he walked, even though he knew he couldn’t stay for long. He walked towards her and sat down a few steps away from her.

“How are you really feeling?”

“Because of what Snow did. With me gone, there’s nothing to trigger it.”

She put it bluntly, eyes staring at the nice stone floors. Snow had been living in the giant, lavish mansion with the best of clothes and food and medicine while they’d all been rotting in dirt and grime. Maybe she should have shot him. No. Coin was the right choice. Snow was going to die anyway and with him gone, Coin would just be a reincarnation of him.

“I’ll just trigger it again.”
