Hey Robert! In the next edition of our project Walking with the Prophets, we’ll be discussing the episode Second Sight, which you co-wrote the teleplay for. What do you think are the ups and downs of this episode? We’d love to talk about your answer on our show!

Sorry it took so long to respond. Probably way too late for your podcast. Honestly, I don't remember much about this episode. Michael wanted a film noir romance for Sisko, like Vertigo. Mark O'Connell sold us a solid story that fit those parameters. Ira and I did the rewrite on the script to address Michael's notes. This was back in the day when Michael would assign writing credits as he saw fit, which is why we have a credit. Under Ira, we wouldn't have put our names on it.
I remember Salli Richardson (now Salli Richardson-Whitfield) was fairly new to acting, but was very sweet and did a nice job with the double part. She's since had a long successful career (including as a regular on Eureka) and is now an accomplished TV director. Other than that, I don't remember the episode turning out all that great. Kind of middle of the road? I know afterwards we thought Sisko wasn't the "Girl of the Week" sort of lead and would probably be best in a long-term relationship. So the next real love interest we created for him was Captain Yates.
Also I remember Avery really wanting to change one line, which was original something like "She wore a red dress," but he changed to "She wore... RED." He went quite big on that line, and really had fun with it.
And that's about ALL I can remember.

Have you watched the Section 31 movie? What do you think about it?
Haven't seen it yet, TBH.

Hi Robert, how's it going? As a longtime DS9 fan, I absolutely loved the documentary about the series. I've watched it several times already. I keep wondering what it was like for you all to reunite in the writers' room and come up with that amazing plot for a hypothetical season 8. Is it tough for you, as I imagine it is for fans in general, to know that the season won’t be filmed?
It was actually really fun to get together with the guys and break a (mythical) episode again. I didn't have much belief the episode or our "Season Eight" would ever actually be filmed, so it was strictly an intellectual exercise.
That said, to break an episode of something always requires an emotional and intellectual investment in seeing it to fruition, at least for me. And about halfway through, I did start getting excited about the ideas we were coming up with, and that sparked a small, entirely unrealistic hope of production. But I wouldn't say it was tough. More of a "wouldn't it be nice?" moment that never felt particularly practical. Bittersweet, maybe?
Mostly I just remember it as a super fun day, though.

Based on your previous statement about Q-Less, where you mentioned it's not the worst episode of Deep Space Nine with your name on it but ranks low on your list, I was curious to know: in your opinion, what is the best and the worst episode of DS9 that you worked on?
Worst is probably "Let He Who is Without Sin," which was a bit of a dumpster fire, starting with the script. Though I also have credits on "If Wishes Were Horses," "The Passenger," and "Fascination," none of which are particularly great.
As for best, I'm very proud of many of my credited episodes. I feel like there are a dozen or so that ended up pretty great, so the good outweighs the bad. As for which is the overall best, I'll let others judge.
