Ok, so I watched the 1956 movie The Forbidden Planet tonight and let me just say that I was surprised by how much I liked it. This is of course when I disregard the kinda creepy relationship between the skipper and Alta (I am not a fan of the weak/naive young woman trope). Anyway, I definitely see how this movie influenced some of my other favorite old-timey sci-fi like Star Trek. And I have to say I kinda agree with the message they kind of drove home during the climax of the film and the outcome. The quote  “We are all part monsters in our subconscious, that's why we have laws and religion” really, i want to say impacted me, but i’m not sure if that is the right word. Basically, its message really resonated with my own perception of humanity and how is uses knowledge sometimes to a self-destructive end and were it not for thing like laws, religion, and socially constructed morals, we would be worse off, i think, than the Krell.

Watched an art21.org video on Pedro Reyes and Carla Fernandez. They are a Mexican artist couple, Carla works primarily with textiles while Pedro with things like concrete, welding, metal etc. they two have even collaborated with other artisans to make work and have been working on building their own house by hand- “the whole house is a sculpture”

Watched Amelie last night. I absolutely love this movie. Did not know the color scheme was based off a painting. But the contrast between the green apartment complex, amelie’s red apartment, and the rather grey or washed out scenery at he father’s house makes sense. Each kind of describes the people who interact in those locations. The father is at first closed off, not letting color or adventure into his life and Amelie brings color in with the travelling gnome pictures. Amelie is a bit of a surreal romantic in her red apartment with odd paintings. Her green tv initially the only connection she used to the outside world of green like the complex itself.

A bit late but i made it to Lecture #3 with speaker Amelia Carley. She spoke about the development of her artistic style in terms of her paintings first emulating reality and slowly moving towards ficticious stories and then combining those two ideas.

Attended lecture #2 with speaker David Bithell. He talked about what he does as an artist by combining spoken humor in the form of narration in the third person in introducing himself. Then sat down at the lighted desk pictured above, had technical difficulties for about 2 minutes, and proceded to show examples of his work, bith unmade and made.

The art opening last night at Marion Ady and the Art Building was truly fantastic. These are just a few of my favorites. The cookies were also delicious.

Busy night at the Schneider Art Opening. The food was excellent and the art was even better. I especially loved the golden cowboys and this little blob of clay on the floor.

Watched the 1927 silent film Metropolis last night. This one had a new, 70’s techno music, style score which made it far more interesting. While i'm sure there are some instances in the movie I could relate to my personal experiences, It seems rather boring to talk about. Instead I will tell you all that many scenes in the film as well as the main plot line, struck me as being familiar, though I had never seen the movie before. I realized that the scenes I thought of as familiar had occurred in other newer movies I have watched over the years, and the plot is one that has been regurgitated over and over again. The closest example I can think of in terms of plot is Chicken Run. With Rocky Rhodes is a Freder type character and Ginger as Maria, the struggles of these characters in their respective movies are similar. Both movies depict a class struggle against a larger more powerful entity. The male leads enter the world of the female leads through deception but soon find themselves supporting their cause out of love. Ew.
