Leona stares up at his family portrait with hatred.

It mocks him. The four of you stand there, looking every bit the idyllic family: you, smiling serenely; him, with one hand on his son's shoulder and his tail coiled around your leg; and your two children, smiling toothily. Your son and daughter, twin blessings delivered to him like rain after so many months of sun.

He wants to tear it from its frame. He wants to rake his claws through it, to sink his teeth into it and feel oil crack and canvas rip. Nothing has ever brought him so much rage. Nor such hollow, empty anguish. He stares at your features--the playful twinkle in your eye, the brightness of your quiet smile... The small bump of your stomach under your clothes. His third child, on its way. Perhaps, if the gods had any love left for him, they would've let them meet them. Let him cradle his child, hold them in his arms, even for a moment.

After all, he once had his dream. His deepest wish. His heart's truest desire. He had you. You, his wonderful husband, the man who had given him everything and more. You'd never asked anything of him, never mistreated him, never dismissed him. With you, he felt seen and heard. He felt safe in your tender embrace. A smile came to his lips easier when you were there. Leona laughed more with you.

So he had claimed you. You had been, to his private surprise, overjoyed. Who'd have thought that the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed herbivore from his school days would bring such a light to his world? Certainly not him. After all, he hadn't exactly made things easy for you at first. No, he'd made you work hard for his trust. Perhaps a bit too hard, but such is the price of courting a prince.

When he finally understood that you wanted him, just as he was, he no longer hesitated. A ring was on your finger before the year's end. Cheka had been delighted, not that it had mattered to Leona. And Falena had acquiesced your marriage, so there was no issue there. You were his husband, and he was yours.

And for the first time, Leona felt true bliss. He was comfortable. He never felt pressure from you to do better, to be better. You understood him in a way that, perhaps, not even he himself did. You completed him, filled up empty spaces he hadn't been aware of.

And then the gods bestowed upon him a gift, a new light--the swell of your stomach, physical proof of your love. You had not one, but two cubs on the way. Leona's chest had filled with pride when you told him. And when they were born?

He vowed to himself, then and there by your bedside, that he would never go back. That this was his purpose now, this small pride of his. Him, his mate, and two cubs. And he would do everything in his power to protect it, to cherish and nurture it.

And then you told him that his third cub was coming. He had felt that same pride, briefly. Before it was crushed.

Before you were taken from him. Ripped from his grasping paws, pulled away like an old and broken toy.

The gods had played him for a fool. He is a toy to them. A puppet, a plaything. A cub, still wet behind the ears, still learning the cruel ways of the world.

No, the gods do not care for him. They never have.

He hadn't even met his child.
