Astrantia major
A pleasant surprise
The name Astrantia is derived from the Latin word ‘aster’ and it refers to it’s lovely star-shaped flowers. Astrantia major is a European perennial and it usually flowers from June to September, so I was a pleasantly surprised to find it fully in bloom and lookin’ so good, halfway through November. I can only assume that this year’s topsy-turvy weather in Vancouver has confused the poor thing and it’s unaware that Christmas is just around the corner. Modern Astrantia major cultivars come in some dramatic shades of pink but I prefer this traditional form; white petals with green tips.
