do you think Strade ever feels kinda soft, too?
has a nightmare or wakes up restless so he needs to come spend time with the captive in the basement. not necessarily take anything out on them, just come see them. talk a while. spend some time together, like they did at the bar.
asks them much more personal questions. not for the sake of using it against them, he doesn't read that way, but just to know, maybe so he doesn't feel alone in his nighttime blues. is this the worst pain they've ever felt? what was the worst pain before he found them? what about emotional, what's their worst emotional pain? why do they react to similar things differently, like screaming to some but crying to others?
ties their wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles before carrying them upstairs. sits them at the table, mics some shitty dollar-store prepackaged dinner to share before getting into the deeper, softer stuff, and allowing them to ask back. he's kind of sick of the "why do you do this" question, but everyone deserves an honest answer to a valid concern. within little time, they're both just... eating and talking. it's almost sick the way they find themselves enjoying it. Strade... means well. he can be a nice person. a kind one, even. confused to say, they may even like this version of him. the warm, soft-spoken, often tongue-tied version of an otherwise greater beast.
when time comes to put them back downstairs and go back to bed, the walk is slow. his captive takes in his heat as he cradles them, Strade takes in their patience and generosity. staying up so late just so he could get a few words in... putting them back on that pole feels like tying a dog up outside. if it weren't so dangerous he'd take them straight to bed for a good cuddle- but that's a reward to be earned, for the both of them.

reading this brought me genuine joy and comfort
Is it valid to look at Strade, say "that person is horrible and deserves nothing" and then go "buuut he's fictional, I don't condone his actions, I acknowledge that he's awful, and yet somehow he's also my little pookie that I can put in my pocket and kiss on the forehead" ? aka: is acknowledging how HORRIBLE Strade is as a character (action-wise) and yet thinking of him as a silly guy outside of a serious context, ok or am I a shitty person?
You are not a shitty person for thinking, "Strade is a horrible murderer but also kind of my little freak." That doesn't mean you condone his actions. It just means you're engaging with the character as a fictional construct, not as a role model. Liking horror, violence, or twisted characters in fiction does not make someone morally compromised it means you're human and your brain is curious!
It is valid to acknowledge how awful a character like Strade is and still find him silly or entertaining in other contexts. That's what fiction allows us to do,it gives us the space to explore complicated, taboo, or even outright evil characters in ways that are safe, contained, and separate from real-life harm of direct interaction.
no one wants to admit: abusers aren't 24/7 snarling monsters. They can be charming, funny, soft-spoken, or seem sweet in some contexts.
Strade is awful. He’s a murderer, abuser, and deeply disturbing character. And because he's fictional, it’s safe to explore those extremes. You can say “he’s horrible and deserves nothing” and still go “he’s my weird little guy and I love to torment him in my brain” It’s a duality. It’s the fun of fiction.
Also, this is just me talking to myself but could ring true to others, don’t only consume horror. I mean it, your brain can’t be in constant “fight-or-flinch” mode. Go touch some moss and watch a cartoon where nobody gets decapitated. Do something that reminds you you’re not just reacting to darkness you’re a person. A whole, messy, beautiful person.
Last thing, stop looking for permission to feel how you feel. People are messy. They’ll turn on you for breathing wrong. You don’t need anyone to say “yeah that’s valid” for you to feel it. You already know what’s real and what isn’t, that’s enough.
like I have some people in the fandom I don’t engage with or talk to cause I don’t agree with them on stuff. That’s fine. I’ll stay over here in my lil corner and only swing hands if they try to pull some shit on me. I don’t need to be friends with everyone and you don’t either.
But also, protect your peace. Seriously. Find people who get you. Who like the same weird stuff, who don’t guilt you for enjoying fiction how you enjoy it. Don’t go with the crowd just cause it’s louder. Don’t let the algorithm or some fandom clique tell you what you’re “allowed” to write or draw.
Throw the plushie. Kiss it. Call him a bastard. Then go eat a popsicle and talk to your inner child. You're allowed to enjoy things and still be okay.
