Concéntrico: Urban Innovation Laboratory

oncéntrico: Urban Innovation Laboratory reflects on the first decade of the international Concéntrico festival in Logroño, Spain, and the 150 projects and designs commissioned for it. The festival’s aim is to serve as a laboratory searching for creative ways of using architecture and design to strengthen communities and to support the dialogue between designers and citizens.

The book offers a unique meditation on the transformation of cities and the relevance of architecture and design in the 21st century. It introduces meaningful ways to address and engage with pressing urban issues—from identity and heritage to temporariness, collectivity, ecology, play, and domesticity—through the lens of selected Concéntrico commissions since 2015. Lavishly illustrated and with concise texts, it features 86 projects by artists, architects, and designers from 20 countries. These are prefaced and held together by a conversation between the editors Javier Peña Ibáñez and Nick Axel, who speak about the festival’s context, evolution, and the knowledge it has produced over a decade.

The book is structured around seven thematic chapters that trace key transformations in the contemporary city and reflect the festival’s urban, experimental, and socially engaged approach. From explorations of identity and fiction to the interplay between heritage and symbolism; from temporariness as a tool for social activation to new forms of collectivity and cooperation; from the design of urban ecologies to the idea of playable cities or the critical domestication of public space—each chapter brings together interventions that test new ways of living together, construct alternative urban narratives, or reactivate overlooked spaces through a contemporary and critical lens.

Among the more than 150 documented participants, the book features projects by internationally acclaimed studios as well as emerging practices. These include Matali Crasset, Oana Stănescu, Camille Walala, Anna & Eugeni Bach, Lanza Atelier, Gregor Schneider, Recetas Urbanas, Izaskun Chinchilla, Guillermo Santomà, Benedetto Bufalino, Jorge Penadés, TAKK, Konstantin Grcic, Studio Ossidiana, Lucas Muñoz, Sara Ricciardi Studio, Raiviobumann, among many others.

Design Week Mexico and Audi - Design Week Pavilion

Audi, its rings focus a new freedom. The rings are a symbol that represents the brand, it is always oriented to the future, where every last detail is taken care of, together with Design Week Mexico, a pavilion is created that tries to be a milestone for the event, its rule is part of the rings that transform into circles that rise and seem to float, these create a clear and unmistakable analogy of Audi. These circles are made of mirror, which are suspended by means of 8 metal tubes, which support these circles, in the same way from the top or on the fifth façade these mirrors can be seen, which notably with aerial photos or by means of a drone that aesthetics and minimalism are enhanced. This new element as a pavilion allows a free passage through its columns and being under them you can see the reflections and those circles that seem to be intertwined.

It is divided into 8 metal posts, these in turn have 4 rings or mirror circles that, by means of a metal arm and support, each one is fixed directly to the post, the metal elements with a satin or chrome finish, to give that luxurious appearance. These circles are each made up of a circular mirror at the bottom and top, which has a small frame in between where they are joined.

It could be called a skyline of trees and that surrounds the surroundings of the river and the small city, in the distance 3 vertical elements rise above the landscape, simple, simple, which are an ephemeral landmark of the temporary landscape of the winter season, each one of them is 10 meters high, anchored at its base on the skid, the same snow creates a small hill where they are planted, their white appearance allows them to blend into the distance and camouflage themselves in their surroundings, if not until they are close. that you notice these 3 vertical tubes that rise. The approach is to remain hidden, visible in the distance in the snow, once close you can touch them and look up, in the distance see beyond.
