blonde  tresses  caressed  sienna’s  shoulders  ,  the  fondest  of smiles  finding  her  lips  as  she  looked  up  from  the  sauce  she’d  been  stirring  at  to  glance  over  at  the  former  boybander  upon  entering  the  kitchen  .  ❝  mm  .  .  .  it  vaguely  reminds  me  of  the  bottle  your  grandpa  opened  the  last  time  we  visited  ?  though  ,  a  touch  drier  ,  maybe  ,  ❞  she  shared  once  she’d  taken  a  sip  ,  easily  relaxing  beneath  his  touch  .  it’d  only  been  a  week  since  she’d  last  gotten  a  chance  to  spend  time  with  him  ,  but  she  missed  this  .  she  missed  their  quiet  nights  in  ,  tucked  away  from  the  chaos  of  their  flashy  jobs  .  ❝  i  need  you  to  try  this  ,  by  the  way  ,  ❞  she  told  him  ,  momentarily  setting  her  glass  down  upon  the  kitchen  counter  so  that  she  could  dip  the  wooden  spoon  into  the  sauce  that’s  simmering  there  on  the  stove  .  she  has  one  hand  hovered  below  the  other  :  one  ready  to  catch  anything  from  dripping  onto his  new  floors  ,  while  the  other’s  been  brought  to  her  lips  ,  gently  blowing  on  the  sauce  before  lifting  the  spoon  to  his  own  so  that  he  could  have  a  taste  .  ❝  what  do  you  think  ?  does  it  need  anything  else  ?  ❞  she  asked  ,  searching  his  face  for  a  reaction  . 

“ well , he’d be happy to hear you say that , ‘cause he told me basically the same thing . ” with a grin , he took another sip , a sort of quiet , contented warmth settling in his chest . although he’d barely been living in his apartment for a week — not even long enough for it to be fully organized — it felt like home in that moment . “ ooh , ok , ” caleb agreed , placing his glass to the side before he leaned forward to serve as her taste-tester . automatically , his eyes closed in bliss , a dreamy smile adorning his features as he savored the perfectly balanced flavor of a creamy , bright vodka sauce . “ mm , ” he hummed in approval . “ wow , that’s awesome . you should try some , too ! ” as if to emphasize his point , he opened his warm , expressive eyes wide , before clapping his hands together in excitement . “ wait , one second , i know exactly what — ” in lieu of finishing his sentence , he leaned over to the central island and hastily chose a piece of the baguette he’d sliced up earlier . carefully , he dipped it into the pan , then offered it to her in the same fashion , one of his hands serving as the insurance policy for his new tile flooring . “ d’you think it’s ready to go on top of our pasta ? ” still smiling , he nodded over to the waiting bowls on the island .

Cassia patted her brother’s head, so pathetically yet adorably propped on her shoulder as she pulled her backpack up onto the bed beside them.. She had used her spare key to come bursting into his apartment at 6:30 in the morning and jumping on his bed like she used to do when they were children. “You are such a baby. You can sleep later. Right now, I need you. It is, it is. I just got this in the mail… if… I could find it,” she grumbled as she rummaged through the contents of her bag. Organization was not her forte, and now she was wishing it had been. “Aha!” she shouted with victory, yanking the envelope from the stack of papers and accidentally knocking Caleb’s head from its bony new pillow.

caleb mumbled something incoherent , his eyes closed as he felt his sister shifting , rifling through the backpack that he couldn’t see . after a long day of unpacking , a 6:30am wakeup call felt brutal . they both knew , though , that as much as he complained , he wouldn’t leave his sister out in the cold ; if she needed him , he was there . “ i wanna sleep now ... ” he grumbled , but was about to open his eyes when he was violently thrown from his makeshift pillow . “ ow ! ” he complained dramatically — in the way that only a sibling could — before pouting . “ alright , show it to me , then . what’s all this about ? ”

Jace chuckled and shrugged dramatically. “Guilty as charged,” he confessed. He sat up and dropped his phone in his lap, growing a little bored of his browsing. “Nah, usually just when I’ve got nothing to do. Fail videos… That’s another good one to get sucked into. You ever watch those?”

with a laugh , caleb shook his head , knitting his hands together behind his head as he leaned back in his chair . “ oh , man , fail videos are such a rabbit hole to fall down . do you remember that show america’s funniest home videos ? i think that was , like , the mother of fail videos . ”

“WELL, I GUESS it’s feeling some pain right now considering it just broke in half,” mia replied with a laugh. honestly, mia wasn’t too focused on the necklace breaking anymore. as she looked through her jewelry box for another one, her head perked up at the mention of a new club opening. “a new club opened?” excitement flooded through her body as she grabbed a random necklace and looked over at him. “uh, hell yeah!”

“ i can’t imagine how i’d feel if i were the necklace , ” caleb stage-whispered , eyes wide in faux shock . mia’s obvious enthusiasm easily cracked his theatrical act , though , and he nodded his head energetically . “ alright , then ! sounds like a plan . the traffic might be hellish , but we can pump up the music on the way there . ” hastily , he threw on his jacket , pushing himself to his feet . “ you ready to getting going ? ”

for a moment , caleb freezes , unsure as to what the correct response is . he certainly would like to look at benji’s handiwork , but maybe politely declining and walking away would be the better option ... he finds himself leaning forward . “ oh , ” he breathes , a smiling tugging at the corners of his mouth , almost of its own volition . “ this is ... this is beautiful . i mean , i’ve always known that you’re talented , but ... ” his words trail off as he sheepishly rubs the back of his neck . “ uh , how’re you doing ? ”

“ it was wrapped in some t-shirts to protect it ; i found it ! ” caleb crowed triumphantly , cradling the prized bottle of wine as he reentered the kitchen . the heady , rich aromas of garlic and onions permeated the apartment , and he couldn’t resist peeking over at the pot of sauce on the stove before he began to uncork the bottle . “ it’s a ten year with notes of figs and raisins , apparently , ” he informed her , his eyebrows raised as he passed her a glass , obtained from his recently unpacked boxes , that held just a splash of the red . then , he raised his own glass to his lips , his free hand naturally , affectionately settling on the small of her back .

“ wait , so why am i up right now ? ” caleb mumbled drowsily , peering at his sister with barely-open eyes . the disorientation of waking up so suddenly still clouded his mind and made his limbs feel heavy , to the point that he was glad to be sitting . “ i wanna be sleeping still . ” his whining was childish , but if he could whine to anyone , it was her . he plopped his head onto her shoulder , his eyes drifting closed once again . “ it better be a real emergency , cas ... ”

People are so fuckin’ messed up, but, God, the results are pure gold.” The curly-headed boy brought the phone back into view and scrolled a little more to see if there were any others as good as the one he had shown Caleb.

“ at this point , you’re just getting entertainment from how stupid people are . ” caleb’s playful accusation held no malice , though , and he was still grinning good-naturedly . “ i mean ... do you spend a lot of time lookin��� around at that kinda stuff ? ”

“ hey , that necklace has feelings too , y’know ! ” caleb exclaimed in mock indignation , before an irrepressible grin spread across his features and he found himself shedding any semblance of seriousness . “ hm ... well , i know there’s a new one that’s just opening downtown . you wanna try for that craziness ? ”
