one thing that stands out to me starkly in trsom so far is the tranquility that settles over Magnus in Alec’s presence. on the train to Venice Magnus describes that his soul has been spinning freely within himself for a long time with no place to point home. then he holds hands with Alec and they have dinner in companionable silence.

it only occurred to me after a while that on any other occasion, prolonged silence on Magnus’ behalf might have seemed uncharacteristic; usually Magnus is a whirlwind and chaos with a sharp tongue. the man loves to yap and charm and joke around and flirt a little. when he does fall silent there’s often a sense of gravity or deep seriousness involved, or perhaps some bad news that is his to share. but with Alec it seems so normal to let silence settle comfortably; I almost glanced over the scene without noting how not normal this is for Magnus.

which reminded me of tftsa: when Magnus is holding Max for the first time and Simon feels instant relief because he trusts Magnus is the most adult-adult person out there to take care of the situation, always the picture perfect of level-headedness with nerves of steel. Alec arrives later. he puts a hand on Magnus’ arm and Magnus visibly relaxes— only then it becomes clear that he was not feeling nearly as collected as he appeared to others. Simon steps away with full confidence in Magnus, commending him on how he dealt with the situation so calmly; meanwhile Magnus was quite literally feeling on the verge of a heart attack.

early in trsom Magnus also notes how utterly strange it feels to be taken care of by someone. I can’t imagine what a relief it must be to finally have someone to put a protective hand on yours, or to support your head on their shoulder in order to share a little of the weight that is stacked too heavily on your own— allowing to be comforted and learning to feel comfort after centuries of always having to be the dependable one for others to rely on.

I *NEED* to see more of The Mortal Instruments gang happy and interacting with each other. These little snippets aren't enough. I need more of them being secure and happy and so sure of themselves. They make my heart so happy

except the clave outlawed helen and refused to rescue mark because of their faerie heritage even though they were shadowhunters too. except emma was told to accept the clave's explanation for her parents' deaths even though none of the evidence ever fit. except twelve-year-old julian was forced to give up his childhood and keep a secret from everyone he loved out of fear that his younger siblings would be taken away from him. except diana had to watch that struggle without being able to help out of fear of being persecuted by the clave for being trans. except ty was constantly ridiculed by other shadowhunters and warned against acting differently in front of the clave because he's autistic, and livvy was teased for defending him. except all the people kit cares about keep getting threatened, hurt, or killed because of his identity as the lost herondale and the descendant of the first heir. except dru is constantly looked down upon for having a different body type that shadowhunters "should" have. except tavvy was almost murdered for the sins of his ancestors that he had never known or had anything to do with.

books have always and will always be political. being an american, i'm clinging tightly to this idea right now, and the characters i love, these ones among others, that taught me to never stop standing up for what's right. in the words of consul alec lightwood, "i don't need to change. and neither do you [...] it's the world that needs to change, and we're going to be the ones to change it." 🤍

Am I the only one who wonders what Magnus’s reaction to Alec becoming consul was? Like imagine your boyfriend gets home from a meeting with a country worth of people (because they’re all exiled from idris) and is like “hey I got promoted”

Friendly reminder that Alec is really, really bad at noticing when someone likes someone else and often thinks one doesn’t like the other - notable examples are Helen and Aline in Red Scrolls of Magic and Joaquin and Juliette in “The Land I Lost” - but it only took seeing Kit and Ty together once and a silent conversation with Magnus to realize something more was going on with them. That is how obvious Kit and Ty’s attraction to each other was.

we tend to forget about this BUT Alec and Magnus had been seeing each other for A WEEK and Alec already had a key to his apartment. that’s the gayest thing they have ever done, and they’ve done a lot of gay things

I was thinking of Tessa and Magnus and was thinking about how they lost so much people they cared about and they still chose to continue loving people and is is so beautiful.
