Case: N3w (Closed)

As of today, Wednesday, October 7th, 2015, the N3w case is closed. At 7:27 PM, after viewing L’s post, I admitted defeat. The case began on Friday, October 2nd, when I sent messages to Near, Mikami, L, and Light. All of them were of a similar meaning. They were all connected in one way or another, even though the messages sent to L and Near were more potent, and threatening. I was very nervous when I sent the first message, but when I saw it stirring up talk among the task force, I was pleased that I caught their attention.

At this time, Mikami was still relatively new, having joined the task force less than two months ago. Of course he was put on the case, which meant that I was playing on both sides. I had to keep up my appearance as a loyal task force member, while also plotting against them. I did have an advantage, however. The information discussed in the chats was at my disposal, and I was able to share it with my partner.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting to get as far as I did. This was my very first anon case, and even though I thought everything out and planned what I would do, I knew I had much less experience than everyone else. It took a lot of my time, and a lot of energy. The case began on a Friday night, and I worked hard through the weekend, but when Monday came, it was back to school. I managed to split my time between schoolwork, studying, and the case, while Mikami did his best to help out his team members.

School was actually a major concern of mine. School takes up seven hours of my day, which is a major handicap. It was also, (as it was in canon) a factor that could lead to suspicion. I don’t have much access to skype during school, and tumblr as a whole is blocked. If N3w and I both disappeared and then reappeared at the same time, it would lead to my downfall much quicker. This gave me an idea, which might seem excessive, but it worked. During my lunch period on Monday, I used my free time to head to my local library which was only down the street. There, tumblr wasn’t blocked, and I was able to view what I had missed so far. By the time I got back home, I already formulated what I was going to say, and was ready to respond. I usually took care of case business the moment I got home before beginning my homework and other chores. I carefully separated when N3w reappeared, and when I appeared, to avoid looking like we were linked together.  

While I did many things to ensure I could continue, I also made many careless mistakes. Some of which helped lead to my downfall. As mentioned in L’s report, a few messages sent between us using mathematical phrases. The phrases were simplified to numbers between 1 and 26, and the numbers were then converted into letters. I’m not sure how I got this idea, but it came to me. I am definitely not a fan of math, and I have no desire to do it on my free time. It was an interesting approach, but it worked, and several messages were exchanged this way. While I wrote out and calculated the numbers, I still managed to make countless mistakes. I watched as the task force struggled to figure out what the hell I could mean, but they still got most of it despite my mistakes. I posted another puzzle to try and fix my mistakes. It again wasn’t perfect, but it solidified their guesses at the first draft. I just recently re-created the puzzle, and checked twice over to make sure that the numbers worked out. Another unfortunate mistake I made was the fact that I jumped ahead. In the case chat, Mikami brought up a message that Near had yet to acknowledge was sent to him. When he realized this, he immediately. I didn’t think that anyone caught on, but I found out that indeed everyone did, and it led to further suspicion. I chose to include these mistakes in my report, because they were a part of the experience. I learned from them, and I know that I have to be more careful. I made quite a few slip-ups, and was ultimately caught, but overall I’m quite impressed with myself for my first case.

Quite a few subtle hints given pointed to Mikami more than myself, but I also gave a few hints to suggest that it wasn’t Mikami, but someone very close to him. I often stressed the point that I knew inside information. This connects to one of the first puzzles I sent;

“You're so certain, are you? Then I would like to challenge that idea. You've lost something very recently, have you not? Something related to cars, and the government. Do your curse him for taking it from you? Surely it's left a tear in you. - N3w”

The mention of cars, the government, cursing, and a tear is a reference to a Twenty One Pilots song titled, “Tear in My Heart”. In that message, I was making a reference to Light and L’s breakup. This was meant to prove that I do know what they might not expect me to. At the same time, I made sure not to give too much away about my identity.

A more specific hint I gave was about Mikami. I agreed that he would most likely listen to L’s orders without complaint, but I also mentioned that I, too, had strings on him, referring to myself as his mun.

Now I suppose I should get into my motives, and why I choose the alias “N3w”. N3w isn’t only me, but also my girlfriend Fae. She was the first person I told when I was first incorporated into the group. I told her all about it, especially the cases, and she seemed very interested. For some time she seemed on the fence if she wanted to join, which gave me an idea. I already had the idea to start an anon case, and I offered to let her do it with me. That way she could get a feel for what it is like, and it could help her make a decision. On the first night we spent all night in a skype call, planning everything out. We drafted and sent messages together, came up with responses, and figured out where we had to go next, and how to get there. While a few of the messages sent to Near and L were rather threatening, we had no plan to kill or harm either of them. Our words were harsh, because we needed to grab their attention. Our end goal was to show them something N3w. To introduce them to Fae, and possibly get her involved in the group. “N3w” is representative of her as a new member in the group.

I’m not sure what else to say. I’ve already rambled on and on, and probably shouldn’t continue.

I suppose I should leave off with a few thank yous. I would of course like to thank the task force, Eva for her advice, Fae for helping me progress with this case, and Book for helping me with the last two puzzles which I got stuck on.

Even though I was caught, I had so much fun with this. I’m content that I decided to go through with this, and I plan to try again at some point. I’ve certainly learned from my mistakes. When I return I will definitely return stronger.

Well, I suppose it’s game over. I’ve lost fair and square. The task force did an amazing job.

Near and L, 

Both myself and others have had a try at the two puzzles you’ve posted. However, we haven’t come up with a logical, fluent answer. This is most likely and error I’m making, but I would like to share with you what I’ve come up with so far. Note, the numbers didn’t work out this smoothly, so I’m responding what I think you’re trying to say. 

1. N3w = Mikami

If you believe that Mikami is the one behind this, you are mistaken.

2. L I G H B I T H C C O M E K I C E

Yes, this one didn’t come out very well at all. Therefore, I’m unsure of what to think. However, the first few letters seem like they should say “Light” 

I understand that what you’ve posted is supposed to stand as “evidence”, most likely against me. I’m apologize that I’m unable to completely understand what you’re trying to tell me. However, as Near stated, I would like to set up an arrangement to see whatever other “evidence” you have against me. 

It’s already Wednesday, I’m not surprised that you’ve discovered possible evidence against me. I am curious to see what else you’ve found.

L, I have read through your broadcast very carefully.

There is no need to make any demands. Due to my unprofessional mistakes and schedule interference, I am open to arranging another phone call between Light and Near. I will give them thirty minuets, but no longer than that. As for your involvement... I will allow it. You may monitor from wherever you are, but you are not allowed to interact. Do I make myself clear?

What a cute threat. It is true that I don't know where you are, but you don't know where I am, either. I have no desire to hurt Light for the fun of it. How I treat him reflects soley on how well you follow my rules.

Which reminds me, I am strongly enforcing the rules from the first phone call. You will be listening in this time, L, and the time has been extended. I will be going through each message, as well. While I'm not expecting to hear anything interesting between the two parties, I will be on my guard for any type of code or hidden message. Should I find any, no matter what the messages, there will be consequences.

It is true, I am not relying on simply feelings. I'm relying on the information given to me from inside of your "secure" headquarters. I have put much planning into this, yes, which is why I have no intentions to fail. The week is half way over, but I've got all of the time I need.

Don't be fooled, L, I didn't expect as much. I have no desire to watch you dance, either. Please, spare me such a sight. I have who I need on my strings for now.

It's good to know that you aren't letting anything slip past you, but are you certain you know what I'm planning towards? What my final goal is? I would love if you were to share. I can almost guarentee you're wrong.

Many people care about Light, I understand that. One can say that even I care about him to some degree, in general.

Is my fixtion really that revealing? I wonder what direction it is leading you in. Mikami must be listening to you, and will not resist your orders for a second. You have strings on him, yes, but so do I.

Oh, we will all be getting something out of this. Something n3w. I'm definitly looking foward it.

As for the arrangements, I am fine to do any time after 8:30 PM my time. I have an idea of some time zones, but not all, so if that is a problem, please let me know.  If not, tomorrow is also an optinion. However, I wouldn't like to stretch this out too long. There are still several more things I have to do, new plans to be made, more actions to take. The week is hallway done, but I'm not nearly finished.

Yes, I have been abiding to my statement. If you look over the conversation Near and Light had, Light confirms that he isn’t hurt. I do need to keep him safe in order to proceed to the next step. In order for it to work, I suppose a few bruises won’t matter, but it will not work with a corpse. Don’t let that discourage you, L. Light has been well behaved, so I have no reason to strike him down. 

I am assured in my schemes, because I have been given feedback. I’ve had no reason to doubt myself or my plans up until this point. There is no use hiding that yes, I am referring to Mikami. You already figured that out with the puzzle you solved. Mikami was one of the names. I’ve simply got a certain feeling about him. I’ve heard what he’s said about Light. He obviously views him as a friend. And who abandons their friends? 

I understand that the HQ is impenetrable, but I wouldn’t hold so much over that. For every door, there is a spare key. For every entrance, there is a back door.I’m only speaking metaphorically, of course. But I have a good idea of how to lure the next bait out, followed by the next, followed by the next. 

What I hope to gain? It’s not what I will gain, but what I hope you will gain.You are in the right track with something new, but that’s all I’ll say. 

If you know the time, you know that the first message was received at exactly 7:38 PM  on Friday, October 2nd. And I’ve clearly stated that you have but a week to discover who I am. So, to give you a better understanding, I will leave this with you:

Taking Light Yagami hostage is nothing particularly n3w. I am confident at this stage he needs to remain secure and safe, you said so much yourself in your announcement. However, I would like to enquire as to his current condition. It may not be possible to speak with him. But then again it is worth a shot in asking for such an arrangement. 

He is being used to lure in bait, once again to directly quote you. A trap for another trap - most likely Mikami as you detailed. This phase of your plan depends on a few things. Firstly, your plans rely heavily on predicting the actions of people. Assuming the reactions of an individual is never guaranteed and difficult to be certain of. 

It’s curious that you have been so transparent with your schemes, also. Whilst this is intended to be where you want my focus to lie primarily, you have emphasised and stressed the importance of the peripheral… Looking elsewhere and more carefully. I’m piecing things together.
