This secret... the world’s not ready to hear.

The truth in Daisy’s statement rang loudly, but Joey wasn’t the least bit surprised to hear it. The world, flawed ol’ Earth and its inhabitants, seem to not be ready to hear and accept a lot of secrets; and this wasn’t even the first time Joey had to suffer the world’s state of lack of acceptance.

Once before, he’d had to live with a secret the world wasn’t ready to hear, and it cost him his own identity, made him have to pretend to be someone he wasn’t just because of the fear that people around him wouldn’t accept him if they knew the truth. And this, this experience was what made this whole situation seem like a nightmare to the new Inhuman.

❝ I’m not even surprised that the world isn’t ready to know about this. There’s so much proof out there. Even my own reaction is proof of it. But I just... I suffered having to hide a secret before, and it didn’t feel good. It made me feel like the real me wasn’t adequate, that there’s something wrong with me, and so I have to pretend that part doesn’t exist. And now it’s happening again. I fought hard to come out of that dark place before, I don’t know what’s going to happen to me this time around. ❞

The Nuhuman knew doctors were supposed to keep their sessions secret, and the psychologist did promise that he wouldn’t tell the others what happened in their meeting, but seeing as Joey had no idea how to rectify the catastrophe that was his lack of control over his ability, he had no other choice but to tell those who had.

❝ But we were talking and I got frustrated, and next thing I know... his belt buckle was melting. Please tell him I’m sorry. ❞

The words Joey said were cradled by curiosity and a tinge of suspicion. Though he didn’t want to think badly of the people who wanted to help him, he couldn’t help but assume there was an underlying catch to all of this that they weren’t telling him about. Wasn’t that always the case? The hunch bubbled in the pit of his stomach, telling him that if ever there was a catch to this, it was one he might not like.
