maddoxparker:
“well, great minds think alike,” maddox chuckled, relieved that ophelia was on board with the idea. “oh, please. you don’t owe me anything at all and i’m serious about that. it would be enough for me to know that you’re out of this sticky situation.” when it came to ophelia, maddox genuinely cared about making sure things don’t go awry since he knew she’s been through enough. any pressure off of her made him feel better. “c’mon, we can take it to my apartment. it’s right around the corner,” he directed, beginning to walk briskly so the papers wouldn’t disintegrate before they got there.
“that’s the truth,” she chuckled as well, standing up from her crouched position. “no, i want to. you probably just saved me from having to fight with that dinosaur printer in the library for another two hours. one of these days i’m going to have to invest in a printer of my own.” ophelia was thankful for the help that maddox sent her way, now, and in other instances. it felt nice to have some form of a support system in the sleepy little town. “you’re such an angel. i don’t know what i’d do without you.” she followed behind maddox to his apartment, holding the papers lightly so she didn’t rip any.

He listened closely. “It’s perfectly alright,” he said, “I don’t think I’d’ve been much help across the globe anyway. Good thing you told me here, so I can help you.” He smiled sadly. “Hopefully it’s a little better now, eh? I think at some point, it’d be more of a happy reminder,” he said gently.
Ophelia’s sweaty palms brushed against her jeans for a moment, biting the inside of her cheek as she listened to him. “Yeah, good thing. I didn’t think I’d be running into someone that I knew. No one really knows where I am.” She nodded. “Yeah, it is. Some days are still a little harder than others, but I’m managing.”

sylviaffs:
“optimism at its finest,” sylvia sighs, always feeling like the odd one out when everyone was always trying to look at the bright side. she was a lone wolf in this crazy and somehow positive town. “nine out of ten, it’s pretty obvious. if you can’t skype or facetime the person you’re talking to because ‘their phone broke’ or whatever other excuse they come up with, then you’re being catfished. people just need to stick to actually meeting someone in person rather than trying to find some kind of love story online.”
she bit her lip, knowing that her optimism at times wasn’t always the best trait to have. ophelia listened to the other, scratching the back of her neck lightly. “i mean, some of those excuses just don’t make much sense anymore. i don’t know if anyone my age even still talks over facebook which is kind of weird, but some of them are kind of convincing, and it’s actually kind of terrifying. i did feel kind of bad for that one girl that was actually talking to some forty-year-old man, though. it was a little dumb to send him nudes, but to each their own, i suppose.”

maddoxparker:
maddox couldn’t help but frown at the girl’s response, knowing there wasn’t much else he could do, but he certainly was going to try. “you know, if we hurry, then maybe we can try drying the papers out with a blowdryer to salvage the essays,” he suggested, a sense of hope laced in his voice. “i mean, if we get it done quick enough and finish before the ink starts running too much, then i’m sure they’d at least be readable!”
ophelia released a small sigh once all of the papers were in the stack, picking them up while trying not to rip them. “i was actually thinking the same thing,” she says truthfully, a small laugh spilling from her lips. “i had been hoping that i wasn’t the only one thinking that. all i have to do is grade and scan them back to the students. if this idea works, i’m taking you to dinner.” ophelia just didn’t want to spend another two hours in the library fighting with a printer, so she would willing to do anything.

Rory hugged her, rubbing her back lightly before letting go. “Everybody handles everything in their own way, you grieve how you need to grieve, nobody can tell you that you’re doing it wrong.” He nodded at her words, watching her twist her ring. “I could never imagine. Jesus, O, you’ve been through a lot; I’d be more concerned if it didn’t hit hard.”
Ophelia was thankful for the hug, feeling a sense of comfort as she released a long sigh. “I didn’t really know what to do, afterwards. One minute he was here, and then he was gone. I would have called, but I sort of didn’t talk to anyone for a good six months.” She pushed her hair behind her ears. “It was a lot to handle. He looks so much like his dad that I couldn’t connect with him the way I wanted to.”

“y’know, everyone keeps asking me that, so you’re definitely not being ‘that person’ yet.” mason looked up from his prize with a smile. “i know. i would be too if i lost it.” he offered a faux-dramatic gasp and a comically large grin. “really? that’s all i’ve been looking for in a hat. i can’t believe i could be so lucky to have such a perfect one appear on my doorstep. now i just need some matching socks or something to complete the look.”
“oh, well thank goodness. i just don’t want you getting lice or something.” ophelia chuckled, tucking her hands into her jeans’ pockets. “it’s a pretty cool hate though.” she pushed her hair behind her ear as she looked up at the taller, laughing a little. “hopefully you would be able to find those matching socks, but i don’t know how easy that would be. that hat has a pretty funky design on it.”

rorysmh:
“Oh, wow,” Rory said, nodding slowly, letting it sink in. It hit hard, it hit home. He let a few tears escape before nodding again. He couldn’t imagine how Ophelia felt; her husband was a solid guy, really one of the best people Rory knew, and it was weird to imagine him gone, especially with a kid left behind, and a wife… he couldn’t imagine what that was like, didn’t want to. “That’s awful, Ophelia, I’m so sorry,” he said, his voice laced with concern, “How are you handling it? You’re probably tired of hearing that people are sorry… it’s just, wow. There are no words.” He let a few more tears slip before blinking and wiping them away.
This had been the first time in a while since Ophelia had told anyone about what happened to her husband, and it hit her with a wave of feelings she hadn’t been expecting. She had never really properly grieved -- sure, she cried and asked why it happened so soon, but she never made a move in a better direction. “Thanks, Rory.” She spoke softly, pushing her hair behind her ear as she shrugged her shoulders. “I’ve been... handling it.” Ophelia twisted her wedding ring on her finger, licking her lips. “I probably haven’t handled it in the best way or the right way, but I had to be there for Grey. Postpartum hit hard after I had him, though.”

frncine:
The roaring sound of her skateboard followed below her as she continued to push her foot off the ground to have its speed accelerate. As her eyes briefly laid itself on a struggling figure, she abruptly halted, kicking her skateboard up before rushing over to lend a hand. “Luck’s just not on your side today, huh?” She chuckled, handing those she had gathered over to the brunette.
Ophelia could hear the skateboard, but she wasn’t sure of where it was coming from or where it was headed. All she wanted to do was get these papers and make the decision to go back to the library or just head home. She looked up when she heard the sound of someone speaking, shaking her head in response. “No, not at all. I’m mainly just a clumsy fool.” Ophelia continued with scooping up the papers, placing them in a soaked stack.

emmywhy:
emmy was on her way back from a long shift at the diner. she was keeping her head down, something she had been doing since she returned to this small town – attempting to avoid any eye contact of passerbys. that was until papers started flying around her, landing in the puddle by her feet. people may often call her an ass, but she’s not that much of an asshole. she began to pick up the papers, although they were probably all too wet to be used, with her hands still dirty from the diner. “yea… that’s definitely not ideal,” she responded, the edges of her lips turnt up into a small smile. “what’re they for?” she questioned, unable to read the content on the papers she was holding.
ophelia probably looked ridiculous, trying to salvage the papers that had been soaked through. maybe if she got them home in enough time, she’d be able to whip out her trusty hair dryer and save them. the last thing that she wanted to do was trek back to the library to print everything out again. one of these days, she’s going to have to invest in a printer. ophelia was thankful as the other brunette helped her pick up the wet paper, knowing that she probably wasn’t going to be able to save any of them. “i teach high school over the summer. my students sent me their essays, and now i have to go print them out again. i’m such a klutz,” she chuckled lightly, biting her lip. “i’m a mess sometimes.”

“I’m going to need him to tell me the plot,” he said, “I’ve never seen it.” He nodded at her response before furrowing his eyebrows. “No? Is he not serving anymore?”
She nodded at his words, scuffing the toe of her sneakers against the concrete. “No, uh...” She exhaled, trying to find the right words to say. “He passed right before I found out I was pregnant. Um, he had leukemia.”

“don’t even worry about it. i completely understand. i can be clumsy myself sometimes,” maddox lied, trying to make the girl feel better about what just happened. as he picked up the soggy pieces of paper one by one, his heart sank for ophelia as he wondered if the papers were of any importance. “you don’t happen to have copies of these papers somewhere, do you?” he questioned, looking up at her with a concerned look as he handed her the wet remains.
“something told me to put this stuff in a folder, but i thought i could make it to the train without any hiccups.” ophelia sighed, giving maddox a small smile of reassurance. something like this happened to her at least twice a week, so she wasn’t all that surprised. at the mention of copies, she nearly wanted to cry. “actually, i don’t. i’m teaching some high school kids this summer and these were their essays. i’m literally screwed.” she took the wet papers graciously, placing them in a small, soaked stack.

“I’d love to meet him,” he said, and then chuckled. “Tennessee is nice,” he answered, nodding, “The only expense, really, is the plane tickets. And you can get military discount, yeah?” He shrugged. “Hotels are obscenely cheap over there, and it’s easy to find locals who’re willing to house you for free.”
“Be prepared to talk about Cars the entire weekend.” Ophelia chuckled as well. “I loved it, I just wish that Dominic and I got to spend more time there. We did get married right before senior year, after all.” At his question, she shook her head. “No, not anymore. I’ll have to look into it, though. I don’t think I’ll have time this summer, but eventually I will.”

“I’d be honored,” he said, nodding. “I know I am! It’s the best. Phuket is stunning, the rocks wrote a song for me, honestly. You have to go.”
“He’s at the babysitter’s, but we’re free this weekend.” Ophelia bit her lower lip. “I was happy when Dominic and I were able to go to Tennessee for our honeymoon, so I could only imagine how Phuket is. I don’t know if I’d be able to afford it, though.”

“Yeah? I like that. It’s sophisticated,” he answered, smiling again. He shrugged. “I stayed around east Asia for a bit. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, yada yada. All short-lived visits, a week or two, usually.”
“Thank you, I thought that it was perfect for him. You two will have to meet one of these days.” She flashed a small smile as well. “Yada yada? You’re a lucky man! I’ve always wanted to visit Thailand; Phuket is my dream destination.”

Rory didn’t ask about her man, figured he was back on tour. “That’s huge news! What’s his name? I’ve been good, you know, here, there, everywhere.”
“It’s Grey, and I only chose that because it was Dom’s favorite color.” A small chuckle fell from her lips. “That sounds a lot like you. Where’d you disappear to after leaving Hawaii?”
