Hiro scratches his chin thoughtfully, taking a fuzzy walk down memory lane in an attempt to recall just what WAS his first invention. He may be young and may know codes and certain arithmetic like the back of his hand but memories from roughly a decade ago were harder to grasp. He’s done so much, BUILT so much since then and it’s easy to tell that he’s having a hard time remembering by the look on his scrunched up face. He relaxes just a second later, rolling his hand around before resting his elbow on the chair’s arm with his chin on his palm. His eyes roll away from the young lady, drifting to the ceiling as he muses,
❝ There was this one bot I made to clean MY side of the room to get Tadashi off my back. ‘You could’ve spent that time actually picking your stuff up!’ He said but where’s the fun in that? ❞
He’s paraphrasing (how could he possibly remember what was said exactly?) and using a deep, totally warped pitch when speaking for his brother. His chest puffs up as part of the imitation but the acting is dropped as Hiro’s laughter quiets down,
❝ But I don’t think that was the FIRST thing I ever invented. It’s the earliest I remember, though. Aunt Cass probably has some pictures stored somewhere. ❞

━━━━━〔♡♬♡〕>
As someone who grew up riding horses, even if she never participated in the clubs, she’s not sure whether she should laugh or take offense at his joke. He’s only 14, so she’ll cut him so slack. She keeps scribbling furiously in her notebook and when he’s done talking and she’s done writing, she checks her phone to make sure the interview is still recording. One thing she’s sure to note done is his body language–he’s confident, and with good reason. In her mind she’s already looking for ways to spice up this little feature, throwing draft sentences together quickly in her head every time he pauses to think. He can’t count on one hand all the clubs he participated in during his high school years, yet he never faltered. “Do you happen to remember what your first invention was?” she asks. At this point she’s genuinely curious. She knew this kid was good, but he’s got some serious stuff under his belt. She’ll be honestly surprised if he hasn’t changed the world by the time he’s 20. Meanwhile she’s over here struggling just to get hired. She wants to know now where he started. Was his first invention some remarkable failure that wound up in the scrap bin, or is it still up and running somewhere? She’s curious about his brother, too, but she’s heard the story and she isn’t sure she wants to ask.

❝ A club for horses ?? Do they just talk about what sort of horse neighs the cutest? ❞
He snorts, getting a real kick out of his own joke before his laughter decides to die down to a mere breath. He brushes past the nub of his nose with the back of his hand as he tries to get back on track. His head cocks from side to side and a crackling pop is heard from his neck both times before he finally gets to her actual questions, one at a time.
❝ Robotics, mostly. There was also the circuitry club, computer science and programming club … Had a stint with some MIT entrance club. I was also part of the National Honor Society but that was mostly because my brother insisted. ❞
He counts them on his fingers before smacking his lips satisfactorily and nodding.
❝ Yeah that was it. Uh, people think I just recently graduated but I’ve been done with school since I was eleven. I went through regular school until I was uh, seven? Yeah, seven. Then supposedly, the principal recommended I take these accelerated courses online. And when high school came around, I’d go for the clubs and those dual credit courses but I wasn’t there for long before I was just completely done and then some. And even then, it was mostly under college professors. It was … Interesting. ❞
He’s masking the times he was bullied, the loneliness he endured during the short time he was there but he didn’t exactly want to turn the interview somber.

━━━━━〔♡♬♡〕>
The moment Hiro starts talking, Hannah starts writing. Of course she’s recording it, too, but actually taking notes always made interviews more comfortable for her. Maybe it was having something to do with her hands, or maybe it was the fact that it made her seem busy and attentive. She nods along while he talks, scribbling furiously in her notebook to keep up. When he stops talking, she looks up, smiling warmly at him. “What sorts of clubs were you involved in in high school, then? I mean, maybe it seems sort of obvious, but at my high school the clubs were mostly archery, equine, shooting sports… things like that.” She didn’t grow up in a place quite as technologically advanced as San Fransokyo, of course–but she also hadn’t paid that much attention to clubs in high school, and therefore didn’t even really have a grasp of what was even out there (she was focused on other things and didn’t have time for clubs). “How–quickly did you move through high school, anyways? I was told you graduated by fourteen. I’m sure your age came with it’s own challenges.”

The question’s as easy as they come but it’s just as loaded as any other. Robotics has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember; to trace its roots was as simple as saying a number but there’s so much more to it than just a single sentence. The subject has had such a massive impact in his life, in his brother’s life. It’s changed his pathway forever and has not only influenced him, but others as well. Where would he be without it?
And then surprisingly, he straightens up. His back now completely against the chair’s comfy cushion, he clears his throat just before beginning to answer almost a little too seriously,
❝ Since I was a kid. But it was around three was when I TECHNICALLY started but I couldn’t really touch any tech until my brother could. All that we got was from his school and I just picked up what he got. And when I jumped from grade school and breezed all the way through high school, I got more access to all of it with those clubs. But most of the hardcore stuff I picked up from Tadashi and just … Did my own thing. Made it my own. ❞
He scratches the back of his neck like a nervous tic but he’s fine. Memories came resurfacing and even though they were bittersweet, they did bring a smile to his face.

━━━━━〔♡♬♡〕>
She knew he was young, but she was completely lost on exactly how young he was until this moment, essentially. She’d heard the number, fourteen, but matching his age up to his accomplishments sort of made him seem older. Hannah looks down at her notebook; this is her first real interview and she wasn’t sure where to start. She wasn’t even sure how she found this kid, or why he agreed to an interview with her. She wasn’t really backed by any news organization. Mostly she was working freelance–doing some PR here and there, some blogging, and just trying to build a portfolio and hoping for her big break into broadcasting. As far as anyone was concerned, she was basically a nobody. But she saw wasted potential in the fact that nobody had talked to this kid as far as she could tell, and maybe this could be that edge she needed. “Right. Well.” She nervous. This kid is half her age and she’s nervous. Maybe it’s because by fourteen he’s accomplished more with his time than she will by the time she’s forty. “Alright. Let’s start with something easy. How old were you when you got into–” whatever this was “–robotics?”

❝ Alright, so ask away! ❞
The chair has wheels so like the child he still is, he spins around in it with his slumped posture. One leg over the other, he has his hands clutched together on his lap just as the chair comes to a slowing stop. He doesn’t straighten up though and doesn’t bother to fix the hairs that have swung out of place; he’s very much a teen that way.
❝ You could say I’m sorta an open book. Just make sure you keep up. ❞
He’s cocky and while most of it is genuine, there is a jokester streak to his words. He’s hoping she picks up on the hint but if his lax tone didn’t give it away, the sloppy smirk on his lips would.

The last compliment catches Hiro of guard. Already he was prepping his mind so he could get ready to fly off and wrap his night up with some much needed sleep (if he could get his brain to shut off, that is) so the stranger’s kind words aren’t what he expects. He blinks, a little dumbfounded for just a second before his lips manage to curve into a muted, but appreciative smile. There’s still an uneasiness coursing his body but for some reason, what the other says sort of … Makes him feel better. It reminds him what he and the team do it all for.
❝ Thanks. It’s – It’s what we do, y’know? ❞
Hiro’s a genius but sometimes he strikes out when it comes to social cues; he can’t sense that the other is hesitant on leaving so he’s already turning on his heel to leave. He pauses, however, and at an angle he turns his head back to give the other a last look as he remarks,
❝ And don’t give up yourself either. ❞
He doesn’t know whether he should say bye or just take off. He’s not known for being terribly polite either but he makes the effort to flick two fingers from his forehead in the stranger’s direction as smooth as he can.
❝ See you around maybe? ❞

――― [ ғɪʟᴇᴅ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀ :// ] ― »
Sure enough, Tadashi knows instantly that he messed up by saying anything. Everything in him just wants to step forward and comfort Hiro as best he can, but even he knows that with what’s going on, it would be crossing a line. He opens his mouth to say something–apologize, maybe–but shuts it a moment later. Shifting the weight on his legs, he only nods at Hiro’s own apology. “Yeah, no, I don’t blame you,” he says, waving his hand. “It’s the suit, it happens a lot.” It actually… doesn’t. But he’s not about to say anything, really, he’s not going to argue. He’s done enough damage tonight; it’s probably about time to wrap this little encounter up before things get any worse and one of them winds up in tears or he does something stupid. “Y-yeah, I should actually–probably be going,” he says, though he makes no motion to indicate any intent to leave. He doesn’t actually want to. This is the first time he’s talked to his brother in far too long, even if Hiro doesn’t know it’s him. Even if he’s only making a mess out of it. “But–uh–before I do.” He hesitates here, mulling over his words carefully. Tadashi doesn’t want to keep making things hard for Hiro, but he has to get it off his chest. He doesn’t know how long it’ll be until they meet again. “Y-you’re doing good work. Keep it up.”

Shake things up a little.
He must have really needed a breather because there’s no way that was what he heard. It must have been his brain tricking him again. It wouldn’t be the first time he heard Tadashi’s voice in his head or even the first time he’s mistaken a phrase for one of his. Regardless, it catches him off guard and it’s so crystal clear in his expressive face. His pupils grow and widen in surprise and his lips part, just wide enough so the gap between his teeth can be noticed. He doesn’t know why but his face becomes hot, his cheeks burning a subtle red as once again, he’s thrown off by a twist in conversation. He doesn’t linger on it, not then and not there. He recovers, mouth shutting and curling into a muted smile as he slowly nods.
❝ Exactly. You’ll get it one day. ❞
Even if the silence is only for a few fleeting seconds, it still bothers Hiro. He doesn’t exactly want to be alone in his thoughts and so he abruptly and spontaneously apologizes to make up for lost time,
❝ Oh, right. Sorry for uh, barging in and thinking you were some bad guy. Didn’t really know what to expect and you were kinda up here looking shady so… You get my point. ❞

――― [ ғɪʟᴇᴅ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀ :// ] ― »
Witnessing the brief conversation to the side worries Tadashi. Hiro says he’s fine, that’s what he tells Baymax, but his voice is stressed and Tadashi knows it too well. He’s upset Hiro; he has many times in the past, and will many times to come. He’s seen this behavior in Hiro behavior, of course. Fourteen years with the kid, right? Tadashi’s known Hiro since he was, what, seven? Hiro was always stubborn and reluctant to share emotions with others, especially with strangers (under which category Tadashi currently falls) But he also notices the way Hiro pulls himself together and tries to keep the conversation going. It’s a bold effort, but he’s sure Hiro’s dying to get their meeting wrapped up (and as much as Tadashi wants it to continue, he knows it can’t). When his own catch phrase is thrown back at him, a smile tugs at the corners of Tadashi’s lips, hidden by the helmet that obscures his identity from his brother. “Yeah, yeah. Look for a new angle. I just gotta shake things up a little, right?” It isn’t until after the words come out that Tadashi realizes he’s probably not helping the case any, and he really doesn’t intend to upset Hiro further. He knows there’s a lot more of that to come in the future, as soon as he can get his nerves together. So he shrugs, trying to brush it off as nonchalantly as he can. “Yeah. Thanks, kid, I’ll keep that in mind.”

There’s still a pang in his chest he can’t shake off but he manages to keep a full attack on his system at bay. It’s not the first time he’s had to and it won’t be the last. His stomach is going wild with his nerves, his intestines tying themselves up in rigid knots and it’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back for Baymax. The robot wobbles on his feet to turn and face Hiro and remains still for a single second but before he can remark a status update of any kind, Hiro stops him with the turn of his head,
❝ I’m fine Baymax. I’ll be okay. ❞
One would be able to easily tell that they’ve been through that situation many times. It’s an offhanded to-the-side conversation and it once again conveys just how on edge Hiro is. He doesn’t sound cool and collected like he had been before. If anything, he sounds a tad desperate to brush his distress under the rug for the sake of appearing big. He’s a fourteen-year-old boy, the last thing he wants to be seen as is W E A K.
So he carries on, his breathing still labored and his nerves still on fire but he’s keen on wrapping things up with the other in a good light. Tadashi was a mentor for him and Hiro knew in his position he could very well be that for someone else. It’s a reminder that helps soothe him a little, enough for him to reply,
❝ That – That’s great! I’ve dealt with robotics my whole life. You shouldn’t give up on it. Even if you’re stuck, just look at things from a new angle. It’s always helped me. ❞

――― [ ғɪʟᴇᴅ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀ :// ] ― »
So it was them, then. Hiro and Baymax and the rest of their friends were the ones who’d risked their lives at Krei Tech to stop Callaghan. The thought is terrifying, to tell the truth, but he also feels immense pride at how far his brother has come–from bratty bot fighter to selfless hero. Still, Tadashi can tell he’s touched on a sensitive topic. Try as Hiro might to play it off, Tadashi practically raised to kid in front of him. Even if they’ve been separated far too long by now, there are some things Tadashi just knows about Hiro. He takes a second to admire Baymax, circling the bot, careful not to make any quick movements, and then he goes on to answer Hiro’s question. Changing topics seems fair; Tadashi knows what he wants for right now, anyways. “Of sorts,” he replies. “Something came up and I had to put my studies on hold for the time being, but I used to be a robotics engineering. Hope to get back into the field sometime soon.” At this point the only thing really standing in his way was himself, and he knew that. When it came to answering questions, he might as well be truthful with as much as he can. At least in that way, he’s not likely to start telling conflicting stories or risk Baymax calling him out as a liar when his vitals spike more than they should. Besides, Tadashi doesn’t want to lie anymore than he has to in the first place; eventually, everything is going to come clean, and he doesn’t want to have to explain his way through more lies than he knows he’ll have to. It’ll only makes things worse and more complicated in the long wrong.

He’s glad that the other switches gears and pivots the conversation in another direction; the topic of his brother is still a sensitive one. He’s just better at managing how he copes now.
His face lights up, his thought process finding new life in explaining the science behind his technology and his hard work. He likes to brag, that’s no secret, but it’s not about that anymore. Tadashi liked to help people, like to teach people how to be better, how to DO better … He wants to do the same.
❝ Okay, see, he’s got coil sets wired into his system that’re powered by a motor generator I made myself. I managed to compact ‘em all to a size that keeps their strength, which is a LOT, but also keeps them compact. Made them all at home. Took a lot of work but it’s been worth it so far. ❞
He’s a lot more animated, his hands moving to convey his every word but he comes to a winding close by elbowing Baymax in his plated arm. He comes to answer the next question with a casualness that only masks just how serious the whole debacle was; the very thought brings vivid memories flooding back all at once. They come in flickers, almost too fast for Hiro to fully register. It’s why he’s quiet, eyes vacant as he lets his brain catch up.
❝ Uh, yeah. We were. Still the biggest thing we’ve faced with to date .. ❞
His chest feels heavy and his lungs are empty, no matter how hard he breathes. He swallows a lump in his throat, trying to remain composed. He’s supposed to be this tough hero, THE strong Hiro but yet there he is with a heartbeat that’s going at speeds he could actually FEEL just as his palms grow clammy underneath his suit. He desires to change the subject, his head beginning to swell as he thinks about all he could’ve lost that day in the portal. He’d been able to shake it off that day but the nightmares came that night. And the next. And the next.
It’s something he’s kept mostly to himself (and Baymax, who’d be at his bedside after waking up from an unsettling dream).
❝ You – You a college student or something? ❞
He definitely doesn’t sound put together but it’s the best he can do when his whole body feels like it’s been sent to overdrive. He’s trying his best, trying his hardest to remain standing. Now wasn’t a good time.

――― [ ғɪʟᴇᴅ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀ :// ] ― »
How on Earth Baymax cleared him as trustworthy is beyond him, but he’s grateful. Note that he might have to check that sensor out, if he ever gets the chance. Behind the cover of his helmet, Tadashi is smiling proudly. It’s so like Hiro to brag a little, even to a stranger; but hey, the kid deserved it. Wasn’t every day a fourteen year old built technology for him and his friends to become heroes of an entire city. And Tadashi couldn’t be prouder. Of course, he notes the way Hiro’s voice drops when he gestures towards Baymax, and Tadashi’s own stomach drops along with it. Ah, yes, the reminder of his lies and betrayal. God, if only it was so easy to just come forward and say something. But now wasn’t the time. It had to be just right. “Looks great. What kinda magnets did’ya use to pair your suit with his?“ His own boots have neodymium in the soles; they make the boots heavier, yeah, but he can climb like mad with them, and it only took a few rounds of gambling in an underground botfighting ring to save up for them (much to his dismay–though he guys behind that whole thing at Krei Tech?” He’d only heard the stories and seen it on the news, but there was no real way to know for sure. And he desperately wanted to know what had happened in the portal.

Hiro doesn’t say anything … AT FIRST. He lets Baymax do the talking, cocking his head over to the robot’s direction as he announces,
❝ His breathing rate, blood pressure, and pulse all point to him telling the truth. He is not a threat, Hiro. ❞
His speech during his listing is choppy, the autofill system integrated in his memory making its appearance as Baymax assures Hiro of the other’s status. The moderate concern etched in Hiro’s face, in his EYES, washes away and almost instantly you can see the change in his demeanor; his shoulders slack and he takes a few steps forward, nonchalantly waving his hand around as he takes the time to toot his own horn a little,
❝ You haven’t ?? ‘Ho have you been missin’ out! I made this all myself y’know, in house. Well, everything except … Him. ❞
He juts a thumb in Baymax’s direction and it’s then that his voice lowers drastically. He sounds somber then, his eyes avoiding the stranger before he clears his throat and moves forward with the conversation, albeit shakily.
❝ B – But yeah! It’s a lot of work but it’s fun. ❞

――― [ ғɪʟᴇᴅ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀ :// ] ― »
This is the first time Tadashi has seen Hiro’s modifications to Baymax up close–and the first time he’s seen Hiro’s suit up close, too. Whole lotta firsts, tonight, but he can focus on that later. Still, the tech is admirable. Exactly the sort of craftsmanship he’d expected from his brother, and he’s glad Hiro has re-purposed Baymax into a protector of sorts, even if it wasn’t quite what Tadashi had in mind for the bot. Who was he to complain? He wasn’t there to tell Hiro otherwise. “Curiosity, mostly,” he says, though actually speaking is a lot harder than he imagined it would be (and he’s been imagining this for a while, now–forever, it feels like). His voice is quieter than he hoped, weaker, shakier. It comes out with a mechanical hum, and he wonders if that helps any. “I haven’t seen–a robot like this before. I got curious. That’s all.” He’s lying through his teeth, but is he really ready for the truth? “I don’t mean you any harm, if that’s what you’re asking.” The first honest thing he’s said all night.
