IT’S  NEVER  EASY.     NEVER  GOT  easier  either.     The  smells,  the  sounds,  some  men  grew  at  least  seemingly  callous  to  it  but  Steve  prayed  he  would  do  nothing  of  the  kind.     He  rather  feel  it  all  again  and  again  than  grow  a  shell.     Perhaps  with  time,  his  mind  would  change  but  at  least  caring  for  the  casualties  of  war  was  one  aspect  of  himself  he  hoped  he  would  never  willingly  blind  himself  to.
AND  THEN  THERE  WERE  THE  real  heroes  of  the  battlefield,  those  who  fought  to  save  the  lives  of  the  fallen.     Doctors,  medics,  nurses,  they  all  held  his  everlasting  respect.     If  a  battle  went  badly  on  their  end  casualty,  he’d  made  a  habit  of  at  least  checking  in  on  the  medics  as  he  was  recalled,  willing  to  at  least  give  a  word  of  encouragement  if  not  aid  in  someway  if  he  can.     ❝   Need  any  help,  Medic?  ❞

His hands shoved deep into his uniform trouser pockets as he waited - regulations be damned, it’s one way to keep his hands from shaking - he couldn’t help his wide-eyed glances about the room.  There probably wasn’t a reason to be nervous but this was different, far different than anything he’d ever done before.  Not only that but he was representing his nation in a way, he supposed.  Wouldn’t want to mess up, didn’t need an excuse to be sent back to act like a dancing monkey again.
But, when he was ushered through the doors, he felt a least a little of his nerves disappearing with the waiting, hands coming out of his pockets.  As soon as he saw the King, he saluted him.  He could be a proper soldier.

Peering over the railing that he leaned on to stare at the ocean below, Steve Rogers watched the waves slide past the hull with a bit of a grin, allowing himself the distraction.  This was the second time he’d been on a ship.  The first had been on the trip over from New York, but now, it would be a much shorter voyage, but still one that fascinated him as much as riding a plane.  Hearing footsteps on the deck, he straightened, head turning to the sound.
On spotting the sailor, he gave him an awkward smile and a nod, blanking on any other sort of greeting.  For him, he still was getting used to people looking up rather than down when they stared at him.  At least the staring didn’t change...

GAZE  ROVING  ABOUT  AS  HE  searched  for  one  familiar  face,  Steve  failed  to  notice  the  car  zipping  past  on  the  road,  kicking  up  dust  not  saturated  by  one  of  the  sprinkler  trucks.     Turning,  he  caught  the  cloud  full  in  the  face,  leaving  him  blinking  and  sputtering  harder  than  the  rest,  a  few  of  the  coughs  nearly  bending  him  double.     He  should’ve  noticed,  damn  it.     Straightening  with  a  few  gasps,  he  noticed  the  exact  person  he’d  been  looking  for  headed  straight  for  him.      Giving  Bucky  a  sheepish  grin,  coughing  in  his  hand  once  more,  he  shrugged  his  fit  off.      ❝   I‘m  alright!     Just,   ❞     another  cough,     ❝   g-give  me  a  minute.   ❞

OFVALERE:
*cough cough*  Let Steve take your muse (or have your muse take him) swing dancing.
#you can take the hc that he knew how and was good at it even before the serum (of course after he could do lifts and the crazy stuff if he,#wanted) out of my cold dead hands,#PLUS it doesn't need to be a girl he's dancing with,#with the war came the normalization of men dancing with men at least when women weren't present,#so Steve is just as comfortable dancing with say Bucky as he is with Peggy,#(And I'm guessing Bucky was probably the one who taught him so there),#And he needs to get out in modern and swing dancing is one way to get him to go somewhere lbh

META 001: PRESERUM HEALTH
Alright, so, I don’t know about you, but have you ever wondered why Steve had all those health issues?  There’s actually a completely plausible reason why that fits in with the timeline of events.  (I doubt that I’m the first one to come up with this because if I am, that’s nuts.)
List of issues: Asthma, Sinusitis, High blood pressure, Heart palpitations and arrhythmia, Easily tired, General heart trouble, General ‘nervous trouble’, Astigmatism, Scoliosis, Partially deaf, Stomach ulcers, Pernicious anaemia (inability to absorb B12, until 1928 only treatable then by drinking more than a pint of raw liver juice a day), and Flat feet
List of Diseases: Scarlet fever, Chronic colds, Rheumatic fever, has had contact with TB & has a parent with diabetes (both his mother and both giving him a high likelihood of him contracting them later on)
The culprit of all of Steve’s health issues?  The Spanish Flu.
No, no, he never had it.  If he did, it would’ve shown up on his list of medical issues.  However, this is kinda strange because Steve was born in July 1918, the height of Spanish flu right around the corner, the strain of influenza already having a devastating impact on the United States.  Considering a newborn that would’ve had such a weak immune system as Steve, not only should he have caught the disease, but it should’ve killed him.
That is… unless his mother caught and survived the disease while she was still carrying him in the womb.  Now, this single part I can’t be 100% sure on as I remember reading somewhere that mothers can pass on immunity to such caught diseases to their children, but… I haven’t seen that article in ages so… yeah, take it with a grain of salt.
BUT, the point is, Steve’s mother contracting the Spanish flu while pregnant with Steve actually explains all of his health issues.  And here’s why:
Now, many studies have shown that there was a direct correlation between mothers contracting the Spanish flu and babies having heart, kidney, and liver problems depending on the trimester of exposure as well as overall decreased weight and height throughout life and a higher likelihood of stillbirth or premature birth.  Already sound a little familiar?
The first cases of the flu appear in the United States in March of 1918, which means that Sarah likely contracted the disease in her second trimester, which is the trimester that has the increased instances of heart issues.  Not only that, but the general height and weight issues could explain his scoliosis and flat feet, along with the fact that Steve was likely a premature baby.  The rest of his health issues can be explained away by being a preemie or some combination of existing health issues and diseases he gets later on.
While most babies like Steve never had such bad issues, Steve was really the perfect disaster.  He should honestly have died with all the issues he had, but he still survived and soldiered on… which is the true miracle of this whole thing.
Two more points:
1.  If Steve had been born in any other time, he would not have had those health issues, but if he’d been born six months earlier, he would’ve been a likely victim of the flu and if he’d somehow been conceived six months later (impossible with his father’s deployment and death), he would’ve been likely miscarried.  So, to be born when he was in that era, he was born in the only window he could have survived.
2.  While the height and weight average dropping in men born in 1918 and 1919 was noticed by WWII due to the records gathered during enlistment, the full correlation between prenatal Spanish Flu exposure and health issues was not discovered until the 1980s.  Thus, the creators had no clue how right they were back in the 40s by giving him these issues!

There’s something triumphant in surviving the unsurvivable, especially when no one was pulled down with you.  He felt that way about his childhood, fighting so hard to stay alive against all the odds.  He felt the same about the serum, that it worked, not killing him or turning him into something he’d never want to be.  But he didn’t feel the same about the war.  No, not a single ounce.  He felt nothing of the jubilation that others did over their victory, only able to think about those he lost along the way.  Nothing purely good came of war in the end.  Some good, like destroying the Nazis - for the most part anyway - yes, but everything else was a blight.
Those were the thoughts swirling through his mind as he nursed a beer in a London pub, his fifth of the night.  Everyone else was on a mission or out celebrating somewhere else, so, despite the fact that no matter how much he drank, it wouldn’t do a thing, he still drank, smiling occasionally as he spotted a scene from time to time joyous enough.
