it is a day that ends in y and i am once again thinking about that illustration from the official english translation. the one of wei wuxian so gently holding the zombie’s hand.

in the book, it’s placed right in the middle of an argument he’s having with lan wangji about the path he’s chosen. (jiang cheng is there too, but he’s not in the argument the same way, or for quite the same reasons—at least not vocally. this is definitely something for a different text post after i have had more time to contemplate the tragedy of their relationship)

lan wangji is saying the path is damaging to wei wuxian’s nature. he says it’s beyond his control. wei wuxian responds angrily that he can control it.

and immediately after comes the illustration.

and just. idk man. i know wei wuxian losing control is a thing that very much does eventually happen—he psychologically breaks, he loses control of his actions, he loses control of the spirits and the corpses he wrangles—but it doesn’t happen in the way lan wangji fears.

wei wuxian remains himself, always, perpetually. he never actually loses the core of who he is; his nature does not change. he is forever kind to those he believes are innocent and deserving of kindness. like the dead.

the situation is more complicated than this text post, of course, because this is mdzs and everything is more complicated. but this is far and away my favorite illustration in the entire thing. wei wuxian’s unseen kindness. just one of a million little quiet tragedies.

there’s something about faraway wanderers.

there’s something about chengling and wen kexing allowing zhou zishu to open up and be soft.

there’s something about the way zhou zishu and wen kexing understand each other without saying it out loud.

there’s something about cao weining loving gu xiang for who she is and showing her what being loved feels like.

there’s something about seeing zhou zishu slowly fall in love with wen kexing and realize there’s so much more to life than he thought, while also knowing that he doesn’t have a lot of time left.

there’s something about wen kexing having wandered around alone forever and finally finding someone who truly understands him, only to be unable to do anything and watch them die.

there’s something about this family they have found and built together that moves me so deeply.
