All humor disappeared and Ryleigh picked up her roll to toss it at him. “You did not! If that gets back to my father, he’ll kill me. And I will haunt you for the rest of your life.”

“You know how seriously he takes me being here. And the reputation of our name,” her nose wrinkled. 

    “ you’re kidding right?                 if your dad believes that rumor than you have a lot more to worry about than my psuedo-serious conversations with my mother. ”

Ryleigh gave a soft snort, “everything.”

“Hey now! Give me some credit. I’m taller than the first and second years,” she pointed her finger at him. “But, yes, you do. I feel there’s a whole world of things I don’t know.”

he gave a smile as his eyes went back to his trinket.          it seemed as done as it could be for the little tools and parts he had on hand. he wondered silently how long the dinner would last, praying he could head back to his room within the next ten minutes or so.

     “ speaking of ... she asked about you in her letter.                                             my mom.                 i told her ya never showed. got arrested. public nudity. ”

“oh that’s alright sugar, though i must say that’s the oddest remark i’ve gotten by far. and i’ve gotten my fair share of concerning comments.” the girl continued to blink, slightly leaning away from the boy. “i would quite appreciate it if you’d stop looking at me like that though.”

           “ oh. RIGHT. sorry ... sometimes i do things just to see how people’ll respond. ” he leaned back in his chair and tapped the table, shrugging casually before lifting his drink to his lips.

“stop, these shoes were a bargain – still, you should consider raising your price cap. expensive compliments are more sincere, or so I’ve heard. wouldn’t want cheap flattery, now, would we?”

            “ you overestimate me. i’m a big thrifter. gotta love them DEALS. ”

She shook her head, red curls bouncing around her shoulders, and she chuckled softly. “Does your mother know that’s where you live? Or are you just this bad whenever I’m around?”

Slowly, she grinned. “I love them because they’re most definitely taller than me.”

             “ can’t exactly hide anything from dear ol’ moms. she hears EVERYTHING. ” he paused, showing off a small smile given his ability to hear everything as well. 

            “ everyone is most definitely taller than you. hell ... i gotta show you some more movies. educate you, y’know? it’s a school after all. ”

“I’m not sure where that talent will lead you but…” Evan started, frowning slightly as he tried to grasp what the other was trying to say. “I don’t even remember what my question was.”

     “ to hell i’m assumin’. or maybe a gentle obscurity. it’s a mixed bag, really. nice to have variety. ” cosmo paused, unclasping the chain which held his glasses. cleaning his bifocals with the edge of shirt, he arched his brow.  “ well i’ve got a question ‘til ya remember. what’s your name? ”

“Pathetic is the one word that I would not use to describe you,” she said with complete sincerity.

“Does that mean Wizard of Oz, please say I can watch it again.”

           he opened his mouth, paused, and then shut it. “ i had a simple response — and by simple i mean from the gutter ... which is where i live — but i’m just gonna nod and say thank you instead. ” 

         “ it doooeessss. you can see those sexy lollipop midgets again ... because we both know how much you love ‘em. ”

alecto gave a mocking, doe-eyed blink, unwilling to give up any ground in the conversation. “If it makes you feel any better, very little does much for me.”

“Oh, do go on, then.” She smiled. “Gotta take compliments where you get them. And I would never be sarcastic.”

       “ sometimes i even pay for ‘em. the compliments. but your smile looks expensive, so i’m thinkin’ your shoes might cost more than my house. looks like ya can’t be bought. shoot. ”

“Please, do, because I was there for all those times.” Her eyes filled with amusement, Little cosmo now looked more like a bug than wizard. “What are you working on anyway?”

        “ jokes on you, you were only there for HALF. i’m twice as pathetic as you thought. it’s why i’m so confident ... it’s the last refuge for the straight-up hopeless. ” he gestured to himself. 

       “ it’s a piece to something bigger. i snuck an old tv in my luggage ... took it apart so no one would know. i’m trying to fix it up. don’t wanna miss anymore of my stories. ”

“PARDON?” odessa blinked twice, her head tilting to the side as she tried to grasp the implication of his statement, coming up blank. “i do think that’s rather impossible dear.”

      “ oh, yeah ... you’d think. ” he looked her up and down, even noting the similar blonde locks. “ sorry, you uh ... you remind me of her. caught me off-guard a little. ” he leaned forward, squinting slightly as if trying to spot any more resemblances.

“No, of course not. As long as I don’t have to hex anyone…” She gave him a side glance before her hand flew up to cover her face. “Dirty was never my intention, it’s your mind that is taking it wrong. I think you’re the one with the problem, stud.”

      “ yeah, sure. okay. blame it on other people. awesome. i’ll spare you the amount of times i’ve done the exact same thing. ” he canted his head, a teasing smirk visible as he lifted his bifocals, which rested around his neck, up to his eyes. “ but no, you’re right. i’ve got a lot of problems. ”

              “well aren’t you just darling, that’s the sweetest thing i’ve heard by far.” the girl awarded him her full attention at that point, tucking a loose piece of her hair behind her ear as she gave him a once over. “i would love to listen properly now if that’s alright with you. i suppose i’ve gotten past the initial shock of being here.”

       “ i was talking about machines. ” he admitted slowly, still trying to place why she seemed so familiar. “ how we can liken to them magic and OH MY GOD ... you’re my mother. ”

Her brown eyes scanned the room and couldn’t help but to nod. Her parents had been glad that she had been given the honor of Head girl but Ryleigh couldn’t help but to think it was a mistake. It probably should have gone to someone who was a bit more worried than she was. Her attention and gaze went back to her best friend and her brow arched. “Already?” She snorted, though not in disbelief. “You know the way to my heart, better start offering up sweet treats and nights of doing whatever I want.”

         “ excuse you. not my fault. never my fault. ” he gave her a quick nod, deciding not to fill her in on the details of his first detention. it was embarrassing, if anything else. “ and you’re sounding pervy again, leigh. you’ve got a problem. just ... everything that comes out of your mouth. dirty. ”

                “oh honey, you’re alright don’t even worry about it.” the girl offered a bright grin, casually glancing around. “i’ll have to apologize though, i’m quite distracted with the view. its DIFFERENT.”

            she reminded him of someone — the bright smile, the perky attitude ... but who? “ i’m inclined to believe that’s a good thing ... but it might just be because you sound exactly how i imagine sunshine sounds. ”

She looked absolutely smug when he took her screwdriver from her. Completely tickled. She brushed her hair from her shoulder, “I’m anything if not prepared. And you’d be lost without me anyway.” 

          “ yeah, yeah. ” he muttered to himself as he finished tightening that one pesky screw.  cosmo looked back up, handing the driver over to leigh with a grin slowly forming. “ you’re gonna have your work cut out for you. i can tell just by looking at ‘em. golly, ain’t it fun being the head girl? speaking of ... i need out of my detention tomorrow. pretty please with a cherry on top! ”
