John Bauer (1882-1918) - Sagoflickan

Bauer was a famed Swedish illustrator of books on Nordic myths, legends and folk tales. His inspiration for the depiction of the fairy girl came from both his wife and Renaissance paintings of the Virgin Mary.
Tragically, Bauer, perished alongside his wife and child when the steamer Per Brahe capsized and sank on Lake Våttern, southern Sweden, in bad weather. All aboard died.
