i just learned that an old irish halloween tradition was that young girls were told that if they sat in a dark room and faced a mirror, the face of their future husband would appear, and if they saw a skull then it meant they would die before marriage. and uh. it’s a well-documented phenomenon that staring at a mirror in the dark makes your brain imagine scary shit. there’s almost no way any of those girls ever saw a normal man’s face. how did this myth possibly persist
