random things omegaverse kind of popped off with:
resting forward and on your knees completely during sex so you don’t wobble around
small hydrating bites of food after large amounts of physical exertion
people having immediate beef on sight with little to no reasoning
aftercare and/or biologically encouraged cuddling
a shit ton of pillows

First season SPN where after being on the road with Dean for awhile, Sam notices he hasn't built a nest once. He's confused because Dean used to nest all the time when they were kids, and he's worried because he knows how important nesting is for hormone regulation in omegas, but every time he brings it up Dean just brushes him off. He comes to understand that the nests Dean used to make in the shitty motel rooms of their childhood weren't really for Dean; they were for Sam. Children with an omega parent need nests growing up, and in Mary's absence, Dean stepped up to the plate. So Sam starts to wonder how he can make Dean see nesting as something he does for himself, not others.
Then it turns out the whole time Dean was nesting, albeit he was doing it subconciously. His nest is just the Impala.

I know scenting is usually portrayed as something done with people, with packmates and family, but do you think people in the omegaverse are ever at work at the office and go like...

DC Omegaverse: The Fab Five
Continuing the series from my Batfam and Trinity posts...
The original Teen Titans Squad (insert usual disclaimer that I'm not saying this is the objective true interpretation or anything, this is just what i do and why)
Dick Grayson/Robin/Nightwing - Dick is an omega, there's more details on the Batfam post but the short version is that while Robin was genderless, he'd confided in all four of the others by the time he split off from Batman and wen solo/full time Titans. A lot of people were surprised when Nightwing debuted, these guys were not any of them.
Donna Troy/Wonder Girl/Troia - The other half of the Wonder Twins and the other co-leader of the Titans, Donna is also an omega. My decision behind this is a little bit less based in storyline reasoning than it is for Diana and more based on vibes (and also to leave the "clone of Diana" option open from the origins soup) but it is one that I have Strong Opinions TM on nonetheless.
Wally West/Kid Flash - Wally is the Fab5 member I have the least opinions on, I think he works equally well as an alpha or a beta, and I'm not adverse to omega!Wally either. If he's an omega then you get 3/5 of the original baby superheroes being omegas, which is a fantastic opening for some angsty storylines or some dramatic tension, if he's a beta you get an exacerbation of his general insecurities and low self-esteem, if he's an alpha you get that balance in the team makeup and, depending on how you run with it, some interesting twists to his issues.
Roy Harper/Speedy/Arsenal - Roy is an alpha, which plays into his tensions with Ollie, and his slightly more combative nature within the Fab5. It also plays into his protectiveness and loyalty and, eventually, him being the Best Dad. It also leans into his struggles with anxiety and addiction in a very "boys don't cry" way, with societal expectations making support systems harder to access.
Garth of Shayeris/Aqualad - Garth my beloved. So you know how a lot of fish species do different gender-changing things for different reasons? Atlanteans are like that too. Garth in particular, is an Atlantean sub-species who can change their gender based on the social needs and demographics around them. Yes this means that Garth transes his gender regularly based on the overall gender makeup of the Titans. Yes he also does it sometimes just to fuck with his friends or just because he wants to.

Omegaverse Worldbuilding Hell: Alpha Basics 6-8
How do alphas act when their mate/intended mate/children are in danger? Do they go feral?
"Going feral" is not unknown, but it is usually considered a cause for concern in a modern setting.
For a more fantasy-esque setting like Naruto it's going to depend on the individual going feral, because you are going to have some people, like the Inuzuka, who are almost expected to do so at least once over something or other.
Generally speaking there is what I would consider a normal human level of protectiveness and aggression.
What happens if an alpha is rejected by or lose their mate?
Withdrawal, depression. You know, usual symptoms of a traumatically ending relationship with the added chemical component.
Occasionally death, though there are usually other factors at play in those cases. (Like a genetic tendency towards melodrama. This is a comment copy+pasted from my naruto worldbuilding document directed specifically at every single member of the Uchiha clan forever.)
If something happens to the mate of an alpha, that they couldn’t control, do they have any psychological issues from “failing” to protect their mate?
Often, yes.
I really feel like this is something most partners would experience in real life. Like, survivors guilt is a thing irl and chalking it up entirely to gender feels off? Obviously there are going to be some specific flavors to it that are influenced by gender, and some social perception, which is probably the thing most influenced by it.

Omegaverse Worldbuilding Hell: Alpha Basics 1-5
(The actual next section of the questionnaire is "Location Basics" which is very much specific to the fandom. I might go ahead and post what I have at some point, which is all Naruto specific.)
Disclaimer Reminder that this is the way that I usually handle these things in my writing. If you do something different go forth and have fun!
-
How are alphas generally perceived by your society? Top tier leaders, or violent thugs that are a throwback to outdated evolution?
A sort of a combination? Top tier leaders who are likely to be more dangerous than other dynamics if/when they snap.
Top tier is a bit of an exaggeration. More like “more inclined towards and more naturally gifted at.”
Which is not actually grounded in reality, of course, but there you have it.
What attracts your alphas to an omega? Scent? Body?
This varies some based on individual, bc y’know, attraction isn’t cut and dried and generic, but scent definitely plays a role.
What are the characteristics of a rut? Do they go prowling for omegas or hunker down and get through it?
Ruts can occur in response to heats. Almost exclusively heats in an omega the alpha is attracted or connected to in some way.
Unbonded alphas generally experience ruts every other month or so from their mid-teens through young adulthood, older alphas more like two or three times a year unless triggered by an omega.
Alphas who are bonded to omegas generally go into ruts triggered by their mate’s heat.
Ruts are characterized by heightened aggression and protective instincts. Despite what some claim, they do not preclude self-control however, no matter what some alphas try to use as an excuse.
The first few years of ruts are, ideally, a sort of slow progression from mild to full-blown, though there are exceptions to this. Sudden Rut Onset Syndrome, where a young alpha goes from 0-100 more or less overnight is considered a medical condition akin to precocious puberty.
How do knots in your world work? Long? Short? Different lengths of time for different things? Do they expand quickly inside, or grow slowly until they can’t move anymore?
It's schrodinger's dick. It's not real until I write myself into a point where I have to think about it.
(In all seriousness, there is a decent variation between individuals, average time knotted is about 15-30 minutes, longer than that and you should start considering medical assistance. It's usually more like 5-15 in cases where there is nothing around the knot, such as if you have really good pull-out game or if you're masturbating without the sorts of toys that would enclose it.
Speed of inflation also varies, though usually towards the gradual growth end of the spectrum. Especially after the early twenties.)
How do alphas mark their mates aside from bonding bites? Do they?
Scenting is a thing in this ‘verse. Between all dynamics. Alphas tend to be most blatant about it. They will usually cover family members and close friends in their scent.
There is a polite threshold where this is acceptable but when it exceeds that it is considered very rude. Or a stress response requiring attention.

hiii! i stumbled across ur really cool blog and am fairly new to omegaverse - i've read some stuff, but mostly without the courage of looking things up and stuff. soooo my natural curiosity has got me here lol. sorry about all the questions but i have a brain itch that i need to scratch ! /nf i am also aware that you're not the highest knowledge on a/o/b stuff but y'know hearing people's thoughts is a good way to start right?
firstly - what does alpha female/omega male mean exactly? does that mean like, before they present you can't tell if they're a male or a female?
secondly - if alphas and omegas both experience heat/rut and can technically be any sex, is there any actual difference between them? is there something separating heats from ruts that i don't know? or like, is there some different factor besides sex that determines what a female / male is, and the difference in sex determines alignment (is that the word???)? sorry im confused lolll
thirdly (?) - i honestly don't know, but do people normally depict a/o/b characters with like, anthro wolf parts? (that's what a/o/b was like, originally based off of right?)
lastly (im so sorry) - are betas really as boring and "helper type" as i always read them to be? what's up with that?
anyways ahhhhhhh, im so sorry for the really long ask lol. don't feel the need to answer any of these questions, or feel free to pick and choose which you answer lol. you seem interested in this stuff so i hope it's okay that im asking questions! thanks for reading all this lol <3
Hello! I'm sorry about the long time without responding. RL has been busy. Hopefully you're still sticking around and will see this! (On that note, I'm also absolutely willing to answer DM's as well if anyone has any questions or wants to start a conversation and maintain privacy/confidentiality. This is a 100% judgement free omegaverse zone. I've been here since it started, there is very little I haven't seen/consider weird anymore XD)
(this did also get lost in my drafts and I'm also not sure if its a troll ask or not, though I am going to approach it as a good faith ask.)
-
I am going to open with my standard disclaimer that there are as many different ways to omegaverse as there are people omegaversing, and anyone who says differently is either lying or misinformed. So very few of my answers will ever be a single answer and more like seventeen potential answers in a trenchcoat.
(Honestly, the best way to learn about the omegaverse is to just read it. I recommend picking two or three different fandoms and perusing the "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" tag in those fandoms. Different fandoms tend to have trends in the way they approach the concept, which is why i recommend trying a few different ones. You'll figure out pretty quickly what you like and don't like that way.)
Accompanying disclaimer that yes, I do approach omegaverse from the angle of speculative fiction and specifically within the bounds of fanfiction. There is original published omegaverse, and even at this point at least one movie and one tv show that I'm aware of (I'm not familiar with them I just know that they exist/are in production) I do know there is also a lifestyle community and that some of them follow me on this blog, any of them are welcome to jump on and add to this taking from their own experiences as well.
Now, on to answering your actual questions!
(under the cut for length)
firstly - what does alpha female/omega male mean exactly? does that mean like, before they present you can't tell if they're a male or a female?
There are a few different options here, depending on how you want to approach it. In the most basic sense, going back to the origins of the omegaverse, omega males can get pregnant and have babies and alpha females can impregnate. This is not always the case, and a lot of people introduce a lot of nuance into their interpretations of it, but if you go back to the original concepts, that's what you get. (+ all the werewolf stuff. And also honestly a lot of the og stuff didn't even address women at all in any way.)
At its core, the Omegaverse is speculative fiction that originated within the werewolf rpf smut communities
secondly - if alphas and omegas both experience heat/rut and can technically be any sex, is there any actual difference between them?
In your standard omegaverse setting, the difference is heat/rut. In that omegas experience heats and alphas experience ruts.
is there something separating heats from ruts that i don't know?
or like, is there some different factor besides sex that determines what a female / male is, and the difference in sex determines alignment (is that the word???)? sorry im confused lolll
If I'm understanding this question correctly, then the answer is that it varies from setting to setting but usually male/female and alpha/beta/omega are separate distinctions. I'm a bit unusual in the way i handle it which is that i mix it all up together and say its 6 "cisgender" options instead of 2+3. If that makes sense.
thirdly (?) - i honestly don't know, but do people normally depict a/o/b characters with like, anthro wolf parts? (that's what a/o/b was like, originally based off of right?)
Sometimes. There's a decent overlap in the anthro and omegaverse communities, but they aren't necessarily connected.
lastly (im so sorry) - are betas really as boring and "helper type" as i always read them to be? what's up with that?
Depends on who is writing them and how they choose to do things.

DC Omegaverse: The OG Trinity
A quick breakdown of my alignments for the classic DC trinity, omegaverse gender style.
-
Starting with Batman, because I've already talked about this a bit in the BatFam post:
Bruce Wayne/Batman is a beta. My primary reason for this is that it all ties back into the way that Batman has no powers and nothing special (except exorbitant amounts of money and twenty gazillion mental illnesses) about him. Which is not to say that betas are "nothing special" but its about perception and social expectations. Being a beta allows Brucie to be considered less of a threat (and more of a ho) and it gives an extra layer of disguise because a lot of people assume that Batman is an alpha by default.
-
Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman is actually the secret fourth option "none of the above" technically. He's an alien. Kryptonians have a slightly different gender system/gender presentations which does, practically speaking, boil down to "all Kryptonians read as mid-level alphas to humans". On both a pheromone and physical level, Kryptonian gender characteristics all align closest (thought slightly to the left) to alpha. Superman leans into the alien aspect, and thus, is genderless, while Clark Kent is a sweet alpha boy next door from Kansas who holds doors open for people and gives up his seat on the bus for little old ladies and moves furniture around for his mom whenever he visits home.
-
Diana of Themyscira/Diana Prince/Wonder Woman is actually the one I have the strongest opinions on, because she is almost exclusively portrayed as an alpha in fic. And I stand by everyone's right to write whatever fanfiction they want forever; that being said, Wonder Woman's most defining characteristics are that she is a woman living in a man's world and thriving, championing the causes of justice and equality. I do not think I will ever write her as anything other than an omega. I think any other option will ultimately alter the story too much to keep her true to herself and her origins. She is a gorgeous, tall, buff, feminine, omega woman.

Omegaverse Worldbuilding Hell: World Basics 20
Military: Historically are any genders or secondarys not allowed to participate in the military? Are female alphas allowed? What about male omegas?
This is another one that depends heavily on the specific fandom/setting.
My primary two omegaverse fandoms are DC and Naruto, so I'll answer this for each of them more as an example than anything else.
In Naruto for instance (copy+pasted straight from my naruto omegaverse worldbuilding notes doc)
In the warring clans era, some clans didn’t let omegas even really out of the compounds. Mostly the clans with bloodline abilities that were exceptionally strong. (see, Uchihas, Hyūgas) In these cases, it was seen as too great a risk to put someone on the field who, if captured, gave the enemy a way to breed the kekkei genkai into their own clan. Beta Females were often restricted from field action for the same reason and in a few clans, Alpha Females as well.
In the canon era, anyone of any gender can be shinobi in Konoha, though omegas are generally encouraged to be less field active. Most do not rank higher than chūnin in peacetime, though in war-time when it is basically all hands on deck, there are more omega jōnin.
In Suna it is very uncommon for omega to be shinobi and if they are, they are almost exclusively “support” (medical corp, etc…) with a few specialized assassins and such.
Gaara is an exception. They were less focused on getting him to conform to gender roles and more focused on pointing his unstoppable murder-bot tendencies towards their enemies instead of themselves.
While DC functions more or less along "real-world" rules, which means that the presence of beta women/omegas in the military has been an ongoing development that varies across history and cultures in adjacent ways to the way it has been for women irl.
Alpha women for the most part would have been permitted/required to participate in the military, though this also varies.

I haven’t reread it in awhile but Cold Wind by Modal_Contingency kind of fits this.
It’s a Castlevania OT3 fic featuring Alpha!Trevor trying so hard to be polite and respectful. And Omega!Sypha and Omega!Alucard trying very hard to seduce him.
There is a significant amount of self loathing from Trevor directed specifically at being an alpha (as opposed to his general self-loathing) so if that bothers you I would give it a miss. I do think it is in character for Number One Sad Man to pick aspects of himself to blame for Things TM, which is why I don’t mind it.
Do you have any recommendations for fics where the alpha plays hard to get or resists the omega?
I wish I did. Although, if people have recommendations, please feel free to share under this post!

it’s not necessarily that I hate the themes most prevalent in fiction set in the real world and it’s not necessarily that I don’t like stories revolving around real people or relationship drama or interpersonal issues it’s more like im a dog who doesn’t recognize that a pill is still a pill if it has peanut butter on it. I need like the little peanut butter spoonful that is aliens or robots or monsters or time travel or something fantastical and not at all down to earth real life so that you can approach me and be like “this story is about how friendships can deteriorate over time and also how this guy feels bad for being a bad friend and causing his buddy problems with their girlfriend” and then look at me making a face at you and be like “AND! they’re all aliens who are doing all that across spacetime” and I’ll be like OHHHHHH OKAY YAY (shlop shlap shlup the sound of a dog horking down peanut butter pills) wow what a poignant story
#i wasn't going to reblog this one#as much as i adore it#bc its so validating when the omegaverse is Understood TM#but then there is the meme#so now i must reblog XD

I do want to add onto this and say that ultimately, the answer to each and every one of these questions is some variation of “sometimes, it depends, what do you want to happen?”
The omegaverse has more different versions of itself then there are people making versions (I myself have anywhere between three to a dozen, depending on how you recon it.) There is no way to do omegaverse right or wrong, go forth and have fun!
Hallo! I'm kinda new to the omegaverse and I've been using some of your post as basis to understand some of the trope. But I have a couple of questions.
1. Can an Alpha force an Omega to receive it's mark? Like if the alpha tie up the omega and just bite the omega to give them a claiming mark. Is that even possible or there should be a prerequisite for the two to bond?
2. Can an Omega reject the Alpha after bonding? If so, what would be the possible side effects.
3. If an Alpha and Omega have been force to separate long term. What would happened to the both of them.
Thank you so muchhh!!
I hope to have a couple of answers for you. Like I say on every other post, these reflect my AU. Understand that Omegaverse is subjective and has a general frame.
Unfortunately, yes. A bond can be formed at any time, but depending on the state of the relationship, it could be weak or strong. In this case, it would be weaker.
Yes, of course! I think either of them can get sick, rejection sickness. It could come with symptoms like insomnia, nausea, depression, etc. I would like to believe that if the Omega is doing it because they didn't/don't want to be bonded, they'll have lessened effects.
Depends on how you wanna characterize this. Side effects can range like those I mentioned before but can be mild. Or there could be nothing that happens. It's more how drama you wanna be honestly.
