Mine Would Be You by @crinkle-eyed-boo (E, 115K) Beautifully written, flawed characters and an emotionally engaging and ANGSTY plot. Super hot smut that made me cry like a fool. Banter, OT5 friendship, and the gritty realness of New York as a backdrop. Loved this one.

we can only look behind by @hereforlou (M, 66K) Absolutely gorgeous writing. Childhood friends to lovers fic that made me cry multiple times (Yes, I was a mess). This one had such realistic expression of emotions and such three-dimensional characterizations. Just loved it.

But I’m Weak by @afangirlfantasy (NR, 2K) This was gorgeous. And SO sad. And I would read 50K of this if I was a masochist. 2K is about all I can handle of this level of angst, but boy was it beautifully written.

an entire desert in our hourglass by tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix (E, 20K) I told the author yesterday that I really appreciated the pain they wove into this story because they did such a good job making the emotions relatable –– even with a pre-apocalyptic setting –– so the feeling cut even deeper. Such a good read. And even though the tags said there was a happy ending (which there is), I still cried buckets.

do you know me by heart by HappyPrincess / @pattern-pals (E, 7K) Ok, not the longest fic, but man is it angsty. These are complex characters with complex emotions and behaviors. There’s a second part being written, but the author says not to expect any fluff. LOL)! The writing here is visceral and raw and real. Such a good read. And if you like this one, there’s a 10K second part that’s great, as well.

Tired, Tired Sea by mediawhore / @mediawhorefics (M, 113K) Always a favorite author, this one is beautifully descriptive and moody and charming. I was anxiously waiting for this one from the first drabbles I saw on Tumblr. I loved the way Harry’s character unfolded and let Louis in, the way Louis made space for him in his life (and heart), and the way Harry’s character struggled with and eventually found a way to live and be happy with his fame.

taking tips and getting stoned by alison (M, 24K) Somewhat OOC slightly older Larry. I really enjoyed the change of pace and the theme of feeling as though life has passed you by, but second chances being possible.

like a timebomb ticking by @infinitelymint (E, 32K) Read the tags on this one because it was written prior to the personal tragedies that have happened IRL to Louis. But if you can handle that, this is a really well written exes to lovers fic with a whole lot of angst and hurt/comfort.

a prayer for which no words exist by Eliane (M, 34K) Gorgeous, deep, layered writing that really makes you slow down and think. At times this fic felt like a metaphor for the war these boys had been through IRL. Normally a dystopian fic with no smut would not be something I’d even bother reading, but I’m really glad I did.

For You, I Will (I Don’t Believe In Magic, But) by weightofmywords (E, 17K) Really unique storyline and even with it being a bit OOC I really enjoyed it (and it made me cry).

Etched in Salt (is a cathedral of the world) by @helloamhere (E, 24K) Absolutely gorgeous writing. Made me teary. Such a clever story. You all know I love this author’s writing –– this time they give us a dark, American, thriller with a bit of psychic goodness. Bonus points for Harry taking care of Louis in a very deep way.

The End Should Be A Good One by bananasandboots (M, 43K) I really like the way this author writes the complexity of emotions that come with heartbreak and reconciliation in this one. It’s really moving and, oh what a surprise, it made me cry!

Don’t Let the Tide Come and Take Me by @kiwikero (M, 29K) This author always writes beautifully and does such a lovely job with their world building. This one draws you in and makes you feel deeply.

Tug-Of-War by cherrystreet (E, 63K) I read this one a while ago, so I can’t remember a lot of specifics, but this author is pretty much a sure bet. My notes on this one make me chuckle: “So touching. Tears. Great characterizations. Angst is heart breaking, but relatively brief. Smut is hot af”. Well, there you go!

And down the long and silent street by Whimsicule (M, 86K) Just brilliant writing and an incredible and original story. Tender, heartbreaking, and terrific world building – effortlessly transporting you into 19th century London.

like a bastard on the burning sea by vashtaneradas (NR, 22K) The OG heart breaker. If you can read this without crying, you have no soul.

Take My Breath Away by @realitybetterthanfiction (E, 154K) You will be so wrung out after reading this fic – this author puts you through it, but it’s SO worth it. Great banter, great side characters, action, smut…it has it all.

wishing you were them by momentofclarity / @gaycousinlarry (T, 20K) This is such a unique and beautiful way of writing alien Harry. I love the way this author somehow makes us deeply understand the indescribable feelings Louis is having thought this fic. It’s just a beautiful piece of writing. And…yes, I cried.

Constant Debauchery by Blake (E, 19K) I think this may actually be one of my favorite fics. I’m a sucker for the time period it’s set in and it reads like how a Merchant Ivory film looks (if that makes sense). Period homophobia (against Alpha/Alpha relationships) gives it a unique twist while hurting so good.

No One Does It Better by nodibs (E, 50K) Oh lord. Get your tissues and hang on tight. Such well-written heartbreak. Happy ending, but you have to suffer first.

a grocery list pinned in blue by dangerbears (NR, 20K) Beautifully, subtle, elegant writing. This one cut really close to the bone for me and it hurt. A lot. But I’d still read it again. It’s that good.

Promise in the Sky by throwthemflowers / @hazzabeeforlou (E, 99K) A deeply personal, heart wrenching love story. Read the tags, but if you’re up for it, you’re in for something wonderful.

things have gotten closer to the sun by starseas (M, 49K) Otherwise known as “the solar flare fic”. Let me tell you…I could only read this once. And it was written back when no one tagged anything but I can’t exactly say this has a happy ending. Kind of? It’s beautifully written and man did I cry. One of those fics that lingered a long time afterwards.

where your heart is by tvshowsaddict, ahncor / @anymerrylilthought This fic has been deleted, but you can download it (along with their other fics) here. I love this fic –– it’s poetic and deeply moving and layered and so sexy and ultimately, so satisfying. In between all that there’s plenty of angst because this author wouldn’t know how to write anything but. LOL!

The Road Less Travelled By by freetheankles / @anymerrylilthought (E, 98K) Also known as “the lumberjack fic”, this fic is an instant classic. The author makes widowed Louis’ pain and depression so real and so moving. The characters are three-dimensional and complex and the well written sexual tension is finally relieved with super hot smut. The fic has unfortunately been deleted. I do have a copy of it, so feel free to message me.

Tainted Saints and Velvet Vices by toomanytears / @toomanydreamers (M, 127K) I don’t even like Harry Potter and I loved this fic. I thought the author did a great job with the character growth and the way they wrote the hate to love relationship.

bloodsport by @tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix (E, 40K) American football, exes to lovers, wonderfully written characterizations and, once again…made me cry.

For Reasons Wretched and Divine by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 95K) A wonderfully satisfying story in two parts. This author gives us love and betrayal and in both halves and finally redemption and a happy ending. Beautiful writing, as always, from this author.

The Dead of July by whimsicule (M, 117K) Even if you know nothing about MCU, this fic is a must read. Lots of angst, great writing, and what feels like very well-handled depiction of PTSD and everything else that comes along with kidnapping, torture, and amnesia. Good times. But there’s a happy ending and a 110K second part (with more angst and mental health struggles) that I haven’t read yet, but I’ve heard good reviews of!

deleted your number (so i can’t call you) by tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix I think this author does such a great job with writing realistically about breakups and the emotions that are involved. Things aren’t just suddenly solved – there’s still anger and hurt and a realization that better communication is needed. It’s just very refreshing to read. And of course, I cried.

the best part of me (was always you) by @moonshinelouis (E, 6K) This fic has some really gorgeous writing – it was such a pleasure to read. The descriptions of heartbreak and missing someone and still loving them were so well done. And I cried, Of course.

My Lights Stay Up, But Your City Sleeps by PearlyDewdrops (E, 108K) Featuring lots of pining, really well done internal monologue from Louis, and excellent smut. It also has some really lovely writing that I felt captured the pain of mental illness/anxiety very well.

The Woods are Lovely, Dark and Deep by @helloamhere (WIP, 4 part series so far, mixed ratings, 71K) Amazing world building, complex characters, beautiful writing, and so much angst! It’s still a WIP, but it’s so worth reading (and the author says they’re working on more so…fingers crossed)!

Stranger on the Shore by CellarDoor (T, 3K) Ok, let me start off by saying that this fic is SAD. Like, not just angsty sad, sad like MCD, not a happy ending sad. BUT, if you can handle that, this is just beautiful writing. Listen….I cry over everything, but I did read this. And I did love it. But, man….

everything suspended by louisandthealien (M, 9K) Oh god, this fic is SO so good. And it’s so angsty and so incredibly well written. I felt every bit of tension and emotion and was so wrung out by the end. But it’s also such a gorgeously crafted fic. I just love it.

Here In The Afterglow by fondleeds (NR, 87K) This author just blows me away each time they share something. There’s such an incredible sense of being immersed in the world they create. This one is so moving and painful and, ultimately, joyous.

all my love was down on a frozen ground by navigator (E, 16K) This is an old one that I didn’t have bookmarked for some reason. But it’s a favorite and I love everything this author wrote. This is one of those quiet, soft fics with a bit of angst and a lot of internal monologue and gentle conversations. I don’t know, there’s something so touching about it.
