LONDON, England -- On October 24-2003, three Concordes touched down in London in a spectacular finale to the era of supersonic travel. To tears and cheers from thousands of enthusiasts on board and on the ground, the needle-nosed jets landed at Heathrow Airport, west of the British capital, in a carefully choreographed curtain-call on Friday 24. The flights -- from Edinburgh, around the Bay of Biscay and finally from New York -- touched down at two-minute intervals, signaling the end to one of commercial aviation's most exciting -- and expensive -- experiments. On the last transatlantic Concorde, pilot Mike Bannister told the applauding passengers: "Concorde was born from dreams, built from vision and operated with pride." "Concorde is a fabulous aircraft and it has become a legend today," Reuters quoted him as saying after soaring for the last time to the edge of space and flying at twice the speed of sound. Champagne and vintage wines flowed during the flight as 100 passengers, including actress Joan Collins and model Christie Brinkley, enjoyed lobster, caviar and smoked salmon. The airplane was fine. Ground controllers tracked it the whole time. The passengers and flight attendants in the main cabin noticed nothing unusual. And the pilots' bodies stayed planted in their seats as though they were flying the aircraft. But they weren't flying it. Their minds had been sucked into a pair of laptops. The story begins with two portable computers. The captain had a gripe about his work schedule and wanted to fix it through the airline's scheduling system. The only way he could access the system was through his laptop. So he opened the laptop, right there in the cockpit. The first officer opened his own laptop and started to teach the captain how to work the software. Pretty soon, their thoughts had left the plane. OK, so they couldn't see and weren't watching their flight computers. But what about the other humans onboard? Didn't the flight attendants talk to the pilots? Not much. Since 9/11, cockpits have been sealed to keep out hijackers. Pilots live in their own little world. The first officer told investigators that he and the captain "were only required to talk to the flight attendants before takeoff," according to the NTSB report. Once the laptops were open, the flight attendants didn't speak up till the plane was past its destination. That's when the pilots looked at their displays and realized where they were. The 777-300 rolled out on September 8 1997, followed by first flight on October 16 that year, 16 years ago today. The type made history on May 4 1998 when it was awarded type certification simultaneously from the US FAA and European JAA and was granted 180min ETOPS approval. Service entry with Cathay Pacific was later in that month. Boeing publicly announced it was developing the 777-300 at the Paris Airshow in mid June 1995 where it revealed it had secured 31 firm orders from All Nippon, Cathay Pacific, Korean Airlines and Thai Airways. Later that month Boeing's board authorised production of the new aircraft. Boeing's 777-300 is powered by the world's most powerful turbofan engines. The stretched 777-300 is designed as a replacement for early generation 747s (747-100s and 200s). Space Shuttle Endeavor (Orbiter Vehicle-105) finishes its last mission through the streets of Los Angeles on October 15, 2012. A 12-mile creep through Los Angeles city streets on a 160-wheeled carrier. It passed through neighborhoods and strip malls, headed toward its final destination, the California Science Center in South Los Angeles. At times, the shuttle has barely cleared trees, houses and and street signs along a course heavily prepared for the trip. The move cost had an estimated $10 million, according to the Exposition Park museum. Singapore Airlines was the launch customer of the Airbus A380 and currently has 19 of the superjumbos in its fleet with five more on order. The airline remains the second largest A380 customer after Emirates, which has 90 orders, 33 of which have been delivered. SIA took delivery of the first A380 in October 15 2007, 6 years ago today, and began operations that same month with a Singapore to Sydney service. SIA operates its A380s on double daily flights to London Heathrow and Sydney and daily flights to Tokyo Narita, Paris CDG, Hong Kong, Zurich, Melbourne and Los Angeles, as an extension of its Narita service. 23 years ago today, on Oct 10 1990, Learjet 60 Flew for the first time. On June 29, 1990, Learjet was acquired by one of Canada’s largest manufacturing companies, Bombardier, founded by inventor and entrepreneur J. Armand Bombardier in 1942. Under the leadership of Bombardier’s son-in-law, Laurent Beaudoin, who took the reins of the company in 1964, Bombardier had grown to become a diversified transportation company, including the 1986 acquisition of Canadair, manufacturer of the Challenger business jet. Learjet was an ideal fit, and provided Bombardier with the industry’s largest family of business jets. Bombardier put Learjet back on track and energized its product line. By the end of 1990, the company announced the mid-size Learjet 60 project and unveiled an enhanced version of the 31, the 31A. In 1991, Bombardier established the Bombardier Test Flight Center in Wichita, the same year the Learjet 60 made its first flight. Certified January 1993, the Learjet 60 went into service as the world’s quietest business jet, and quickly became the best seller in its category. It eventually evolved into the Special Edition Learjet 60 in October 2004, offering over $1 million of the finest options and equipment as standard equipment. 9 October 1999: The last flight of the SR-71 (#61-7980/NASA 844). NASA crews flew four Lockheed SR-71 airplanes between July 1991 and October1999. They were used for research and to support the U.S. Air Force reactivation of the SR-71 for reconnaissance missions. The Air Force had retired the Blackbirds in 1990, but Congress reinstated funding for additional flights. Lockheed SR-71A (61-7980 / NASA 844) arrived at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center on 15 February 1990. It was placed into storage until 1992. It served as a research platform until October 1999. Following its final flight, 14 years ago today, on 9 October 1999, it was again stored at the Center. It was placed on static display in front of DFRC on 14 September 2002. This aircraft made 734 flights during its service life, including 56 NASA flights. It accrued a total of 2,353.6 flight hours. The F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy's carrier-based two-seat air defence, intercept, strike and reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft was developed by Northrop Grumman to replace the F-4 Phantom fighter and entered service with the US Navy in October 8 1972, 41 years ago today. In 1987, the F-14B, with an upgraded engine, went into production. Further upgrades in the radar, avionics and missile capability resulted in the F-14D Super Tomcat which first flew in 1988. The US Navy operated 338 F-14 aircraft of all three variants, but the aircraft was replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. In July 2006, the F-14 made its last carrier launch and, on 22 September 2006, the US Navy officially retired the F-14 Tomcat. The F-14 is currently in service with Iran Air Force. The variable-sweep wing and the twin almost upright tail fins of the F-14 Tomcat give the aircraft its distinctive appearance. The variable sweep wings are set at 20° for take-off, loitering and landing and automatically change to a maximum sweep of 68°, which reduces drag for high subsonic to supersonic speeds. The wings are swept at 75° for aircraft carrier stowage. The F-14B and the F-14D have two General Electric F110-GE-400 turbofan engines rated at 72kN and 120kN with afterburn. The X-15 was a rocket-powered aircraft 50 ft long with a wingspan of 22 ft. It was a missile-shaped vehicle with an unusual wedge-shaped vertical tail, thin stubby wings, and unique side fairings that extended along the side of the fuselage. The X-15 weighed about 14,000 lbs empty and approximately 34,000 lbs at launch. The XLR-99 rocket engine, manufactured by Thiokol Chemical Corp., was pilot controlled and was capable of developing 57,000 lbs of thrust. A reaction control system was used to maintain attitude above the atmosphere. The reaction controls employed hydrogen peroxide thrusters located on the nose and wings. Depending on the mission, the rocket engine provided thrust for the first 80 to 120 seconds of flight. The remainder of the normal 8- to 12-minute flight was without power and ended in a 200-mph glide landing. Because the nose landing wheel lacked steering and the main landing gear employed skids, the X-15 had to land on a dry lakebed. Douglas XF4D-1, 124587 is the second prototype of the Skyray. It was delivered with an interim 5,000-pound thrust J35-A-17 turbojet until the intended 7,000-pound thrust XJ40-WE-6 became available. That was followed by an 11,600-pound thrust afterburning XJ40-WE-8. Production models of the Skyray were equipped with J57 turbojets. XF4D-1, 124587 was used as an engine testbed by General Electric, testing the J79 and CJ805-3 engine intended for the Convair 880. Piloted by Navy Lt-Cdr James F. Verdin, XF4D-1, 124587 set a new world's air speed record of 752.944 mph over a three-kilometer course above the Salton Sea in California on October 3 1953, 60 years ago today, breaking a record speed of 735.70 mph set by Michael J. Lithgow in a Supermarine Swift F Mk4 just nine days earlier at Castel Idris, Libya. Lt-Cdr Verdin's record was beaten twenty-six days later by Frank Everest in a North American YF-100A at the Salton Sea in southern California. The X-15 become one of the world's most important research airplanes. It was the first airplane to reach Mach 3, Mach 4, Mach 5 and Mach 6. On October 3 1967, 46 years ago today, William (Pete) Knight flew the X-15 and established the world absolute speed record for winged vehicles of Mach 6.70 or 4,520 miles per hour (7,232 km/h). This is twice as fast as a rifle bullet. More than 46 years later this speed record still stands for an airplane. Only the space shuttle has flown faster. The X-15 first flew in 1959 and made 199 flights during the next nine years. The X-15 was constructed to fly higher and faster than any other airplane. The X-15 exceeded 50 miles (80 kms.) altitude on 12 occasions. On August 22, 1963 Joe Walker flew the X-15 to 354,200 feet (67 miles or 107 kms.) to set the world altitude record for winged vehicles. Collectively the most successful members of the Gulfstream corporate aircraft family, the Gulfstream II and Gulfstream III are Rolls-Royce Spey powered developments of the original turboprop powered Gulfstream I. The Gulfstream II flew for the first time on October 2 1966, 47 years ago today. The Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop powered Grumman Gulfstream I proved to be quite successful as a large long range corporate transport, while the availability of an faster and more powerful turbojet powered model, the Rolls-Royce Spey meant that a jet powered successor was a logical development. Grumman launched such an aircraft, named the Gulfstream II or G-II, in May 1965. While based on the original Gulfstream I - the G-II shares the same forward fuselage and cross section - there are more differences than similarities. The most obvious difference is the two rear mounted Spey axial flow turbojet engines, others include a new swept wing and tail. A similar size fuselage to the G-I seats 10 in a typical executive configuration. No prototype G-II was built, instead the first to fly was a production standard aircraft, which first flew on October 2 1966. -Anyone remember The Six Million Dollar Man?- The lifting body seen crashing in the opening sequence of the show is real footage of the crash of the Northrop M2-F2, though the sequence is misleading in that it shows both the M2-F2 crash and images of a different model, the Northrop HL-10, being released from its B-52 mothership. This continuity error is notable by the presence of the central fin and dihedral of the outer fins of the HL-10 at one point followed by the lack of a central fin and presence of the vertical outer fins indicative of the M2-F2 on the crash footage a few seconds later. The dialogue spoken by actor Lee Majors during the opening credits is reportedly based upon communication prior to the M2-F2 crash that occurred on May 10, 1967: (“Flight com, I can’t hold her! She’s breaking up!
