in true canadian fashion: sorry i'm late

although, in some ways, i'm actually early. You know what I realized doing this ambitious painting? this year is going to be the 15th anniversary of IAMP.

The call for auditions was uploaded September 22, 2009, and if I recall correctly my audition as artist and VA was accepted around October or November of that same year. I've grown a lot as an artist and as a person in that long time and for some weird reason I just can't let these guys go.

anyway, thanks for everyone who participated in the roulette, I know it doesn't seem like a big deal but I really struggle drawing all of these guys without losing steam. it really helped! especially since I don't do a lot of gouache work and I second guessed myself a lot. It warms my heart a little to see you guys engaged in this silly game.

what else is there to say. oh yeah, I put two types of maple leafs. the stereotypical sugar maple is in the upper right of course, but I also put a manitoba maple in the lower left because that's the kind of maple I'm most familar with where I'm from. it's long been my mission to bring the western rep in whatever I do, so it's kind of my love letter signature to my own constantly changing understanding of Who Am I and Where Am I From.

I did it! I managed to finish another animation, and I added audio to it.

Apologies in advance, I did the voices for both Sask and NWT.

Appreciate this please, it was a literal pain to voice Sask for those two lines.

I literally slapped myself in the face at least 10 times to get Sask’s first line right. (You can sort of hear when I slapped myself in the face)

As well as I had force myself to speak in as low of a tone as my throat will possibly allow, to attempt to sound at least sort of masculine. (I have a naturally high pitched voice)

I think it would be fun if there were more characters who are obviously self-centered and have a comically superfluously high opinion of themselves, but in a way that's somehow just genuinely wholesome. Like they just genuinely think they are personally the best and brightest person alive, but the implied thought of everyone else being less and inferior doesn't cross their mind. They're too focused on personally being adorable to be worrying about other peoples' business like that.

Like this character is introduced in such a ridiculously outlandish and flashy way that makes both the audience and the other characters assume this is one of those "why is this guy even popular at all" kind of Smarmy Supposedly Sexy Scumbag characters, but then it turns out that they're just. Genuinely like that. Not a toxic and evil monster hiding behind a thin veneer of external charm, or a tragic wounded bird hiding their secret intense self-loathing under layers and layers of ironic bravado, but just wholeheartedly thinks they're the best and charming without needing to put anybody else down.

And it turns out that is why everyone seems to like this buffoon - they're just an absurd ray of pure fucking sunshine that warms and illuminates anyone their light lands on. Just going around like "I am the most brilliant and most clever around, how splendid are you to be my dearest friend" and legit mean it. This isn't the "douchebag rival with an implausible fan club" that one would assume by first impression. This is a golden retriever that passes the Harkness test.

last election in 2019 i posted this cutesy drawing about the importance of voting in the provincial election and how i try not to be too partisan on this little old ask blog

this year i dont give a fuck, go vote ndp. don’t spoil your ballot just please go Participate in the democratic process legally cuz it took less time than it took to lock up my bike at the polling station and it’s important. and for any of you outside edmonton it goes double, and yes i used to live in [REDACTED RURAL RIDING] in 2012 and despite the climate I voted against danielle’s wrp and i’ve proudly done it again today.

As I write this, advanced polls are open and election day is next week (Monday, May 29th). Check out Elections Alberta to find out where and how to vote (and if it’s your first time and you are a little nervous, they even outline exactly what to expect when you go!)

(this is the only piece about the election i’m planning to post at this point and i’m not intending on answering asks about the results so thanks in advance for respecting my boundaries on that!)

unironically 10+ years later and im here again. and honestly im here for it.
