Filipino Courtship: Traditional vs. Modern
Courtship takes the position that the two people have no physical contact at all (no touching, no hand-holding, no kissing) until marriage. Many in a courtship relationship will not spend any time together unless family members, preferably parents, are present at all times. In addition, courting couples state up front that their intentions are to see if the other person is a suitable potential marriage partner. Courtship advocates claim that courtship allows for the two people to truly get to know each other in a more platonic setting without the pressures of physical intimacy or emotions clouding their view.
Courtship is an action of expressing love for someone. And now, on this concept paper, I would like to differentiate what are the things that a man do when he is courting a girl in the past and present.
TRADITIONAL COURTSHIP
Courting under Filipino traditions gives a big value of respect to women. Courting under Filipino tradition gives very big importance on the value of respecting the woman and her family and strictly adhering with proper rules set by society for pursuing a lady They cannot talk a lady in the street and ask her number and address. If a young man sees a lady he likes he will ask a help in a common friend of both parties to ask for a permission to a girl's family especially to her father. If the permission is obtained, the suitor will visit girl's parent and share introductions of his life, his achievements, and many more. The parent will introduce their daughter to the gentleman. In the Philippines, when you court a lady, you have to court her whole family as well. In the first visit, the couple will not be left alone on their own to get to know each other. It will just be an informal chatting and introduction and getting-to-know stage between the suitor and the family and making clear of the suitor's intention to pursue the host's daughter.
In the past, teenagers have a high standard when it comes in courtship. Even the parents were so strict in allowing their children to court or being courted by someone. Parents wanted to see the man in their own house; they wanted the courtship for their girl to happen in the house because for them, it’s a sign of respect not only for the parents but also for the girl.
Here in the Philippines, when a guy is courting a girl, they do it in the evening and they serenade the girl in the house. They used a guitar for the instrument and a love song that expresses their admiration and love for the girl, and it is called "harana". They will sing and wait until the lady finally opens the window and invites them into the house. They will then be served with light snacks and they can talk in the presence of the girls parents and the man's friends.
In the past, the guy offering a free service for the family of the girl. For example, when the father of a girl is a farmer, the guy helped the father in the farm or the guy will helped the girl is house choirs and so many more. This is the stage where he does the "paninilbihan" or servitude. He serves the girls family in any way that he can to show to them and to the girl of his sincere intentions and love for her, be it by chopping firewood, fetching water from the well, etc. It is a way of saying "I will do anything to prove my love for you".
Another way of courting a girl in the past was writing a love letter for the girl. A love letter contains admiration and love for the girl and the man bring some "pasalubong" or gifts to the women and other gives not only to the woman but also to the part of the family.
MODERN COURTSHIP
The same with the way of a man in the past, some teenagers do some techniques in courtship. Because of our modern world, some techniques are disappeared and many are added. With the emergence of digital and social world , the way of courting really changed. One thing affects this change is the influence of may foreign cultures. Many modern courtships revolve in the liberalism of Filipino youth. On years ago, women were not allowed to mingle with their opposite sex in public place, now it’s impossible. You can now meet a girl you like through a common friend or on a party but never on a street as the same is still regarded as inappropriate.
Modern courtship does not really have a pattern. It could start from a group date where friends would pair friends up and tease them. Friends could play cupid and set a couple up and leave them on their own to talk then before you know it they are going out on a date. With the influence of western television, modern courtship these days are going fast although it doesn't necessarily have the emotional baggage attached with immediately going to bed. It would take a lot longer time for Filipinos to trust each other to get to that point. It stems on the virtues rooted from the olden days.
The big difference of courtship between today’s teenager and before is that courtship is the true actions of visiting houses of a girl making love proposals personally and most of all making love letters. Unlike today most courtship among teenagers is done through text messaging on cell phones. But this courtship as we all know is all done only on the click of the hands with no other effort. This makes courtship among teenagers today easier but as far as parents are concerned, this could be unreliable and not sincere. It’s hard to know the sincerity of a guy to a girl.
For me, courtship is literally the most exciting and romantic thing for women. This is the time where you can evaluate or look for a potential partner. But as time goes by, courtship is already just becoming a "game" for others. Some are just courting to become "in" while others are just because of peer pressure. If I were to choose between traditional and modern courship, I would definitely choose the traditional one. I would prefer the conservative norms set by the society for pursuing a woman during our ancestors time. Before, you can't just approach a woman on a street just to get her name or address not like now where you can just get her number through online or in any platform. Asking for permission from her parents was also part of it where you can visit the lady to their place, same with serenading or what you call "Harana" But now, with the advent of new technologies, little by little, courtship becomes cheaper and cheaper— literally. In just a few hours of conversing through sending text messages and e-mails, and other social media platforms, one can easily find a partner, the reason why relationships these days don’t stay long compared before, because in the first place, the foundation of the relationship is not strong. It wasn't easy going back to the old tradition, but being picky won't hurt your ego. We should know our worth. Hard work and patience are important in order to achieve a long lasting relationship.
It is important though to note whether it be traditional or modern, to show your sincere intention of courting by introducing yourself to the family and impressing the girls family in any way that you can. Most parents would still want their children to be courted inside the house though some modern and liberal-minded Filipinas don't do this anymore and prefers to meet up somewhere else instead, a clear disregard of tradition and parental respect.
For a man, if you truly loved the girl, make sure that you expressed it in the right place and in the right way. For me, Filipino way of courtship is probably among the most romantic in the world.

Enrichment 6(February 10, 2018) Cyberbullying
Whether it is physical, verbal or cyber, bullying in the Philippines is taking its place in school and over the internet, with the study that states that about 50% of the students are being cyber bullied. According to Google, Philippines is considered the 4th country to search for cyber bullying over the internet. Cyber bullying is the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person often done anonymously. It is done through technology. With the emergence of digital and social world cyber bullying has become a serious topic of concern for us. In this generation, we all know that this form of bullying is wide-spread. We must be aware about this matter. Maybe some people think that cyber bullying is not that serious problem, but they’re wrong. They just don’t fully understand what it can cause the person who is bullied. This is a matter that they must put a focus on.
Cyber bullying is not like social bullying that hits or hurts you physically. But it is more on the emotional. This form of bullying may result: (1.) discrimination, (2.) humiliation, and (3.) intimidation. People nowadays, even the young ones are being exposed to this. It causes children to become depress if they are constantly picked on by peers. It makes it hard to them to communicate with others. This must be stopped it might change someone’s life but in an unwanted manner. It might take someone’s self-esteem. And the worst is taking someone’s life. Maybe you think I am exaggerating but that’s the truth.
So, actions must be taken for this thing to stop or somehow minimize. Stop this kind of bullying. It’s a serious problem affecting our youth. We are responsible for this and we can cut it off hand in hand. Stop and say no cyber bullying.

Enrichment #1: Importance of Rice (February 3, 2018)
The rice shortage that recently affected a number of countries in the Asian region showed how unpredictable nature can be if we continue being not concerned about improving rice production. Before the shortage occurs, we see a lot of people waiting in a line for a bag or two of NFA rice. Worse, for some, eating three meals a day is no longer possible. This leads us to reflect on how we can help eliminate this strongly felt problem. At restaurants, we see a lot of leftover servings of rice knowing that empty appetites in resettlement areas exist. On the way to school, I witness families living in a small shelter usually made of wood pulling through lunch with mere deep fried crackers and noodles at hand. Along the area, I see young adults satisfying themselves with small pieces of meat or vegetables on a stick sold by street vendors. Yet, at the canteen, I see tradeoff-students ignoring the value of rice servings and tasty dishes where plates are left on the table just that.

Enrichment #2: "Ways on How to Relieve Stress (February 3, 2018)
Stress could be a good or bad for you depending on how you assesses the situation. Good stress if you are having a benefit on it, like it makes you more motivated, energize, and stronger. Bad stress if it makes you more problematic and stress. For example, you do not on how to resolve your problem because you feel anxious and fearful on it.
According to Mayo Clinic, there are two sources of stressors. The first one is External Stressors; it comes outside your physical wealth like situations, people around you, and experiences. Second is Internal Stressors, it comes inside your physical wealth like our thoughts that you have caused you to feel fearful, uncertainties about the future, lack of control over situations, and even your personal beliefs, which include our own expectations.
Here are some ways on how to relieve stress:
1. Look at the stressor as relational situation where you can asses and change the way you look at the stressful situation.
2. Talk to people you know and you trust, surround yourself with friends who can offer you sincere understanding and empathy.
3. Get into relaxation activities like breathing exercises, regular physical exercise, meditation, yoga, reading a good book, or listening to relaxing music.
4. Create a situation where you can feel more relaxed like a quiet environment or going on the beaches.
5. Learn to manage your time. Analyze how much time you are spending for studying, for being online, for texting or calling, for watching TV and see where you are spending more time.
6. Eat properly by selecting nutritious, healthy foods. Eat regularly and avoid skipping meals.
7. Seek spiritual growth through prayer.
8. Have worth-while hobbies like singing, dancing, drawing, and acting.
9. Have a bonding with friends like watching movie or picnic.
10. Believe in yourself.
No one will manufacture a lock without key. Similarly, God will not give us problems without solutions. You are strong. You can do it. Just pray and believe in yourself that you are capable of resolving the problems that you are facing right now, and think on that stressful situation can bring out the best in you and will make you stronger.
