EAST ASIAN MYTHOLOGY MEME:
[3/8] JAPANESE GODS AND GODDESSES | AMATERASU
Amaterasu [天照], Amaterasu-ōmikami or Ōhirume-no-muchi-no-kami is a part of the Japanese myth cycle and also a major deity of the Shinto religion. She is the goddess of the sun, but also of the universe.
In Japanese mythology, Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun, is the sister of Susanoo, the god of storms and the sea, and of Tsukuyomi, the god of the moon. It was written that Amaterasu had painted the landscape with her siblings to create ancient Japan. She became the ruler of the sun and the heavens along with her brother, Tsukuyomi, the god of the moon and ruler of the night. Originally, Amaterasu shared the sky with Tsukuyomi, her husband and brother until, out of disgust, he killed the goddess of food, Uke Mochi. This killing upset Amaterasu, causing her to label Tsukuyomi an evil god and to split away from him; separating night from day.
There is also a long-standing rivalry between Amaterasu and her other brother, Susanoo. When he was to leave Heaven by orders of Izanagi, he went to bid his sister goodbye. Amaterasu was suspicious, but when Susanoo proposed a challenge to prove his sincerity, she accepted. Each of them took an object of the other’s and from it birthed gods and goddesses. Amaterasu birthed three women from Susanoo’s sword while he birthed five men from her necklace. Claiming the gods were hers because they were born of her necklace, she decided that she had won the challenge. The two were content for a time, but her brother became restless and went on a rampage, destroying Amaterasu’s rice fields, hurling a flayed pony at her loom, and killing one of her attendants in a fit of rage. Amaterasu, who was in fury and grief, hid inside the Ama-no-Iwato (“heavenly rock cave”), thus effectively hiding the sun for a long period of time. The world, without the illumination of the sun, became dark. The gods could not lure Amaterasu out of her hiding place until the goddess of dawn, Ame-no-Uzume, was able to trick her into reappearance.

“It’s a bad habit you shouldn’t pick up.”
“ I KNOW WHAT IT IS. ” He shrugs almost too casually. “ Usually the grown-ups don’t get too heated about it, though. Unless, y’know ... another kid got caught saying it. ”

We finally get the news from just outside Portland we’ve been waiting for: LAIKA’s next animated feature film, helmed by studio president and CEO Travis Knight, is called Wildwood.
Based on the bestselling novel by Colin Meloy, lead singer and songwriter for The Decemberists, and illustrated by artist Carson Ellis, the film is currently in production at the studio.
“As a deep-dyed native son of Oregon, I have rainwater, microbrew, and fair-trade coffee coursing through my veins,” said Knight, the BAFTA-winning director of LAIKA’s Kubo and the Two Strings and the live-action hit, Bumblebee. “With Wildwood, I have the opportunity to tell a madly ambitious story of magic, wonder, and danger set in the place I grew up. My very own Portland will join that pantheon of unforgettable fantasy realms, with a stirring epic that will kindle imaginations, lift spirits, and break hearts.”
“Colin and Carson’s novel is a lyrical work of art,” Knight continued. “The entire LAIKA family is fully committed to honoring it with a film of breathtaking spectacle and aching beauty. I can’t wait to share it with the world. Although we’re doing this in stop-motion, so, you know, I’ll have to.”
In describing the film, the studio shares, “Beyond Portland’s city limits lies Wildwood. You’re not supposed to go there. You’re not even supposed to know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland. Her baby brother Mac has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, and she – along with her hapless classmate Curtis – is going to get him back. Prue might think she’s too old for fairytales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one. One filled with strange talking animals, roguish bandits, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions.”
“Wildwood,” they added, “is a tale of love, loss, sacrifice and secrets, and of the magic you can find on your doorstep, if you’re willing to look for it.”
Wildwood will be the first fully animated feature film lensed by multiple Oscar and BAFTA nominee, cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. Arianne Sutner will produce, with Chris Butler writing the screenplay; both won Golden Globe awards for the studio’s last film, Missing Link. Each of the studio’s five films - Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) and Missing Link (2019) - were nominated for the Academy Award for Outstanding Animated Feature. Recently, the studio announced its first live-action feature film based on the action thriller novel “Seventeen” by screenwriter John Brownlow.

“–it’s going to be quite lonesome traveling without him by me, but at least I can trust that he will take fine care of my rose while I’m gone.” He folded his arms around his knees, gazing up at the night sky from their place by Kubo’s cave. Vulpecula, the constellation that was dear to the Little Prince, was shining down on them. Though sorrow laced his words, there was only a fond, relieved smile on his face.
He held like that for a moment or two before turning his smile back to the friend he had sitting beside him. “And besides, this way I have fewer worries on my travels. Foxes are very good at protecting flowers from caterpillars after all.”
“ WELL, WHAT ABOUT THE BAOBOBS? ” He says after swallowing a mouthful of rice. “ He wouldn’t bother your sheep, would he? Since I’ve heard foxes like to do that ... ”
... WELL, the fox was a very small fox! And if he was that small, then he would not bother the sheep. “ TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ROSE. You speak often of it. ”

“ Y’know I can’t pose like this forever. ” The chittering beast gives a final stretch before he rolls to his paws. “ You need help falling asleep, kid? ”
HE HUFFS, CHEEK PUFFING SLIGHTLY with indignance as his model -- the furry, fluffy GOLDEN BEAST that stands before him, finally unraveled from their pose. Kubo was almost finished, too ... gently, he pulls on the corners of the origami figure, and he takes the fold on its belly and blows into it. The air PUFFS its once flat body into something more rotund, not unlike the real thing.
Then, still neglecting to reply to AIRIN’S question, Kubo reaches for his shamisen and slings it across his lap. He sets the origami piece down and plucks a few strings on his beloved instrument.
The figure would pop up, its ears perking with alert as though it was shaken awake by the ethereal presence of MAGIC. The miniature AIRIN began to amble about, though somewhat drowsily -- reflecting the state of its master. No sooner than when the notes began did the makeshift being fall forward on its face, and unravel into flat, planar sheets with a faint rustle. The music ended.
“ I’M FINE. ” Kubo denies, at last. “ I’ll feel better, ‘soon as I get going. ”

HE WORKS DILIGENTLY with his hands, folding paper crisp between his fingers. Despite Kubo’s unwavering concentration, his eye looks HEAVY, as if he’d hardly gotten any rest.
He had a rough time sleeping last night.
