Buy Otis a Present!

So, buying Otis records. There’s 3 options really. Either you choose something you think should be in a record collection for a kid, or you choose something from a list I make, or you send me money and I promise to spend it on a record! I kind of want Otis to have a wide range of music, not just the stuff that I would buy for him. I like to think I have pretty wide ranging tastes, but there’s stuff I just don’t listen to or wouldn’t think of - our friend Magda just bought Purple Rain by Prince for Oats, which is something I would never have bought.

HOWEVER.

Becky and I are putting the music on for Otis, because he is a tiny person and can’t be trusted. So obviously we’re not going to put on something we hate. If your taste falls in that area, your choice may end sitting on the shelf untouched until Otis is old enough to choose it himself. Which is fine, but less exciting for us. If you’re not sure, ask! But realistically, we’re not very likely to be playing any stuff that’s misogynistic, homophobic, racist, glorifying violence… And he is only 2, so probably he can save Aphex Twin and Cannibal Corpse for when he’s a bit older. Right now, he seems to be mostly into music with trumpets. I’m not against that.

Building a collection

This blog is a kind of a record of the albums we’re collecting for our son Otis. He’s currently 2 years old. Our plan is to give him a variety of music to listen to, and to try not to force our own tastes on him somehow. We’ve asked family and friends to buy records they think he should have, although most of them have not taken that very seriously yet. Unfortunately this plan is not the cheapest idea we’ve ever had. Records are expensive! Anyway. The idea of the blog is to keep a record of each album, who gave it to Otis and anything else we feel like saying about it. It’s only really for us and for Otis, but if someone else reads this I hope it’s vaguely interesting.
