Sometime after they meet, while they're still somewhat at odds, Percy starts calling Annabeth 'Kia', and much to her frustration, refuses to explain it. Once they become friends, she notices he stopped using it, and asks why.

"Do you want me to call you that?"

"I mean, it's unique." She says, instead of saying that it's better than 'Annie' which only reminds her of Luke and the nonstop 'Smartass' from most campers.

It becomes their thing. Everyone knows that Kia is code for 'Annabeth', and everyone knows only Percy is allowed to call her that.

In Tartarus, she asks once again about its meaning. He promises to tell her when they get out.

So, after Gaea, she corners him and asks the question. Percy goes violently red from embarassment and has to explain it's short for 'know-it-all'.

Proof that Percy and Annabeth are the highest standard of love, according to all their demigod friends. (And to Piper nonetheless, the child of the love goddess.)

This is what I was getting at that one time when I said I think it’s normal for demigods to be like “well we’re no Percy and Annabeth, but…” etc etc. Because their friends and fellow demigods see them as having this permanent, unreachable standard of love and partnership. Especially since it’s built on years of famous battles, quests, and history together that everyone knows about and hears stories of. In the demigod world their relationship is treated like a legend in progress. They’re still alive, still grabbing lunch with friends on school breaks, but they’re already a mythic story everyone knows and refers to. And I think that it’s especially funny considering Percy and Annabeth spend most of their free time doing dumb shit at his apartment or running around on little side quests that make them scream at each other lol
