I love your art style and the storyline sounds fascinating!! I really love the designs of Buckbone Hunt and Chickadee Tailfeather, could you share more about them? :0 also how does naming work in this world? I’m guessing it’s a first name last name situation? Do specific names have any deeper meaning?

Unfortunately i dont have much about Buckbone yet, shes the leader ("Helm") of Deuil colony where the main characters live.

Chickadee is Bellblooms little rebound after her mate Lily dies, hes a sweet guy and really loves her but it never works out.

The naming conventions are pretty loose but yes they have first names and last names! some of the names are more made up words like the books, like Bellbloom and Fawnbelly, while others are human names like Freyja or just one word. Their names dont change as they get older.

The names and vocabulary come from the colonies ancestors which were cats that lived on pirates ships! They pretty much started as whatever words they heard. Second names evolved when the separate colonies formed to keep track of bloodlines, when a cat raises kits with someone they take one or the others last name.

From a writers perspective, Swallowtail's name was definitely meant to go with her character on a deeper level, think your classic butterfly metaphor.

Common belief among cats in shrub colony is that deer are the eyes of their god, Deuil.

This is Swallowtail, Navigator of her colony (medicine cat) When times are tough Deuil will send her eyes to the struggling to show she is watching.

Her eyes are always safe in this colony, cats that believe in greater power must never harm the animals their colony's god has sent.

id say the colonies work more like old working villages than the clans do in the books, there are many many roles and jobs and new ones get invented pretty often! every colony does have key roles though, Helms, Navigators, Herbalists, Officers, Cheif Officers, Hunters, Avines and Queens.

Navigators are your typical med cat and herbalists are sort of like nurses, they also do more of the sciencey work. Navigators are believed to be a sort of vessel for the god their colony follows, this is why only the Helm and the Navigators are allowed to bury the dead.

Officers are pretty much just soldiers, wars do not break out often and cats are allowed to mingle in other clans (again more like villages) however during conflict cats from opposing colonies are of course not treated so warmly. Cheif officers are like deputies and tend to lead mostly the Officers, the Helm directs everyone else.

Hunters are one of the roles that have many jobs within it depending on your colony, some train to exclusively catch fish and some train exclusively for birds, others may train for a different aspect of hunting like teaching. Speaking of teaching, every cat studying or striving for a job is called a Cadet.

Avines weave tools, again many pathways with this one.

and Queens raise young, however unlike the books the Queen can be a job title, like working in an orphanage.

Theres much more but this post would go on forever haha, as for the characters i will certainly reveal more about their stories once i get some of my animating juice back

this is Bellbloom and her late childhood girlfriend, Lily Littlebrook

Lily’s memory was tainted because of how violent she was before she died, the first victim of a rabies outbreak that no cat had seen before. Bellbloom never thought of her any different.
