seated for makeup as they finish setting up the lighting. you’re big enough now to have your own assistant, and she rushes to your side as soon as you get up, ready to hand you a bottle of water, your coat, anything your heart might desire — including james dean’s number. she smiles back at you every time you say thank you, you figure it’s not something that happens so often around here. you know she hopes one day you’ll put in a good word for her, if only she knew you have no control of what’s happening around you.

the director smiles at you when you’re standing on your mark, he holds your shoulders and whispers in your ear: “you’re my star” and you might have believed him if it wasn’t for his history, his seven failed marriages with his other muses. and, of course, the jokes that run around the studio. but you smile back either way, you’re an actress after all, you have to play your part.

he sits on his chair, everyone rushes to their mark as well, you catch the producer release a sigh when he stops everything just before yelling action. he wants another light moved. they spray your hair again while you wait, your eyes hurt a little but you ignore that. you’re a star, this is your moment. or it will be, soon? almost ten minutes go by before he’s ready to shoot again, promising he won’t make any more changes. it’s fine echoes around the room but you know the hollywood reporter will hear about this.

it’s time. the spotlight is on your face, you have your cue.  lights, camera, action. do your best.

         ‘   disgust   ?   ’   the   three   lines   still   dusting   cupid’s   bow   pull   into   a   familiar   smile   at   his   choice   of   vocabulary.   it   didn’t   seem   fitting   enough   —   not   when   he’s   standing   between   her   legs   with   a   beating   heart   that   didn’t   belong   amongst   teeth.   but   disgust,   is   as   close   as   it   gets.   ‘   you   make   me   fucking   sick.   ’   broken   laughter   resonates   the   bathroom   in   place   of   usual   tears,   fingers   dabbing   white   residue   clean   as   she   gauges   for   satisfaction   with   her   answer.   ‘   that’s   how   you   like   me,   right   ?   ’   wanting   arms   close   in   around   his   neck,   heavy   eyes   begging   for   what   her   mouth   couldn’t   —   another   nauseating   taste   of   him.   ‘   disgusted.   ’
