finished reading all the lord peter wimsey novels, have just a few short stories left, and i've honestly enjoyed them

but i gotta say, after going through all of them, and all of them being pretty straightforward pieces of work set very firmly in reality, getting to the last book and (spoilers for a ~90 year old story) just in passing over maybe several pages tops near the end having it suddenly go 'oh btw ghosts are real' and then just dropping that and going back to the main plot, is fucking wild

having now read a number of books by dorothy l sayers it's very funny comparing her self-insert female murder mystery writer character with agatha christie's

sayers' is young, intelligent, opinionated, and dramatic, often a protagonist of her own who does a great deal of real sleuthing, and the main detective character falls madly in love with her

meanwhile christie's is a frumpy, absent-minded mess of a middle-aged woman who's constantly spilling things everywhere and tearing her hair out over her books and cursing the day she created her eccentric european detective character

reading a book set in an old-fashioned university where characters are regularly referred to as just the dean and the bursar and so on and it's making me realize just how permanently poisoned certain words have become for me because of discworld
