Revised Final Proposal
WHO: For this final project my material will be about myself, and my progression on working out. I want to show my journey and daily struggle trying to reach my new PRs (Personal Records).
WHAT: Since last year, i have always tried to lift a certain weight for certain exercises. For the next 8-10 months i repeatedly failed trying to put up new PRs (Personal records). It was not until recently that i miraculously, and successfully lifted 405 lbs in deadlifts, 315 lbs squatting and 275 lbs on bench. I have many recorded.
HOW: I want to document a sort of before and after video. I want to show all the attempts and the times i have failed, then quickly translate into me actually being able to do the lifts effortlessly. In each one of the videos, i make different facial expressions representing the excitement, pain, etc. With my facial expressions in the videos, i hope to capture and give same the feelings and emotions i was feeling to the viewers.

Selfie Proposal
As I was thinking of an idea for this selfie project, I thought about one of the three questions we were asked in class. The question was “what is self?” and I really thought about how the answer to that question could be implemented in my photograph. Describing one’s self takes more than just one picture so I’m deciding that for one of the idea for my selfie I will include a background that will have other selfies of me. Each picture in the background will show different types of personality traits and other features I have. Each selfies in the background will showing a little bit of description about myself.

Antonio’s Journey
Nikko Leyva
For this interview, I interviewed one of the oldest person I know, my dad. My dad’s name is Antonio T. Leyva. The name was given to him by my grandfather Mauricio Leyva, and my grandmother Lourdes Leyva; together they had 10 children. Antonio was born on September 24, 1947, in Quezon City, Manila, Philippines. He has a total of 5 children, having 3 girls, and 2 boys; myself being the youngest, and my sister April the oldest at 37. One of his earliest memories he remembers as a child was when he was in elementary school, he was watched and experienced a total eclipse. He was very fascinated of how the light from the sun disappeared and the day turned into “night-time” for a split moment.
When Antonio was in high school he was one of the best basketball players in his school and was asked to play, a league called ABL, short for Antipolo Basketball League. His first year playing he was able to win the championship, and take home the gold. When Antonio is not playing basketball, him and his friends would go in the woods or forest to get fruits from trees or bushes, and they would either eat them or sell them to people to make money. Also on the weekends he worked at a bakery that his aunt owned and sold bread, cake, and other things. Learning this about my dad made me realize that as a teenage boy we were both very similar with our hobbies and makes me proud that I am sort of following his footsteps.
Tumblr media
Antonio earned a bachelor’s degree in architectural design at Far Eastern University in Manila. There in college he worked as a waiter, and a bus driver to earn some extra money. After graduating he was given a job at Western Drafting Board Company and worked there mostly his whole life. I highly praise my dad because he was able to go through college barely being able to pay for it. Also, I am very impressed that he was an able to get a degree as an architectural designer, because as a current college student I understand the daily struggle of studying and other stuff. When Antonio reached age 58 he was given the opportunity to travel to the states along with his family, and start a better life with a better job. He first moved into a small apartment in Vineland, New Jersey, near Vineland High School. He was given a job at Division Five Detailing Company, and he was the head structural detailer. After a few years of working and earning money he was able to buy his own house, cars, and other things.
However, the United States isn’t the only countries he has visited. Matter of fact he has visited five other countries! In 1980, he traveled to Saudi Arabia, as a supervisor for many architectural work. At first, he thought the culture was very weird, he quotes “Around that time (1980), as a catholic man you were not allowed to look at an Arabian woman.” Also, he says the water he drank there was very salty, and things were not very sanitary. He mentions it is bad to eat around lunch time and had to be sneaky while eating. If he chose to eat around lunch time he either ate in the bathroom, or in his car. Other than that, he said the food he ate was very similar to the food he ate back at home. After my dad have told me all these places he’s been to it made inspired me to want to travel to different places just like him. I plan to travel to different countries this summer because of this information my dad has told me about his past.
In 1991, at age 45 he traveled to Singapore also a supervisor for the architectural work there. Antonio lived around the boundary of Singapore and was very close to Malaysia sometimes would go over the border. When someone mentions to him “Singapore” his first thoughts about it is that it was VERY CLEAN. People were not allowed to chew gum in public due to people throwing it away on the streets. He says there were many Chinese places there kind of like here in America. He says food was very cheap and he was able to buy meals costing him about 2 Singapore dollars (equivalent to 1 American dollar). Also, one of his most memorable moments there was meeting the President of the Philippines Corazon Aquino. After President Aquino gave a speech, there was a small gathering that Antonio decides to go to. There the President Aquino notices my dad as a fellow Filipino and asked him to sit and eat lunch beside her.
After asking if there was anything he could go back to and change what would it be, he responds with, “My major…” He says the major took a lot of effort, and thinking involved. To him it was very stressful, and that he was given many responsibilities. He frightened that any mistakes made would go back to him, and would be held responsible. Also, he says that the thing he hated the most about his work was that it turned half his hair white due to the amount of stress it put on him. He wishes instead of architecture, he would’ve join the police academy, because it would’ve paid a little more, be less stressful, and he would look more, “bad ass.” However other than that he says he is happy with the decisions he has made in his life, and he is very content on where he is today.
To Antonio he believes that what is most important thing to a person is the money you have. To him he feels that without money, you are nothing. “Without money, we would not be where we are today.” Antonio explains. He says because of money we were able to leave a very poor country, travel across the world, and live a better life. Because of money he was able to take care of his children, give them better home, and safer environment to live in.
As Antonio’s youngest child I would have never guessed that my boring ole dad lived such an adventurous life. Before doing this interview, I always thought my dad was just this goofy, retired, old man that had a regular day job. Now that I have learned more about his past, and some of his childhood, I look at my dad as a different person. Knowing more about my dad gives me more of a reason to look up to him and be just like him a few years from now. I never realized how much effort and stress he had to go through throughout his entire life just to make sure all five of his children receive the best opportunities in life. I could not ask for a better father than my very own and I would like to thank him for all his sacrifices because I would not be half the man I was today if it was not for him.

There the President Aquino notices my dad as a fellow Filipino and asked him to sit and eat lunch beside her.
One major historical events that took place during his lifetime was at September, 11 2001. He remembers it was night time, and he was at his job in Philippines at the Western Drafting Board, working on a project for California about industrial buildings. He was alarmed and very terrified when he first heard of the tragic news. During the time he had families and colleagues at New York City and was very worried for them, wondering if they are alright. The next day he later finds out that they all in good condition and none of them were hurt. However seeing all those lives lost, impacted him personally.
Throughout Antonio’s lifetime many things have changed, and impacted society. He feels that what impacted society the most is computer technology. He says “The world’s technology is exponentially growing due to computers.” Even though he was owned at least 5 personal computers, and cell phones, to this day he still has trouble completing the simplest task when it comes to computers or cell phones. Sometimes he has to call me or my brother for help just to check his email.
After asking if there was anything he could go back to and change what would it be, he responds with, “My major…” He says the major took a lot of effort, and thinking involved. I really like your idea, and i feel like it would be a great way to relate to your friend. You can both look back of how different it was back then comparing to now. However, you should try to be more specific with the questions, and make them less vague.
Interview Proposal
I wanted to ask someone from my hometown who now goes to Rutgers how they feel about the Rutgers campus. I would like to ask them how its different from our hometown of Monroe and wanted to ask if he had a transition period even though he’s just a 20 minute drive from home. Me being in the same position as him, I can ask whatever questions I’ve had about being here since he can give a response that I can relate to. I would also like to ask about how he’s had to change or adapt as a person living the college life now. I would like to do this with a video but if my friend is uncomfortable with that i can also do audio or find some way to write the conversations down.

My Proposal
For the this assignment i have decided to do the interview on my dad. My dad is very old (almost 70), and this gives me a good excuse to learn more about his childhood. Him and i are pretty close but i know very little about what his experiences were when he was a child. He also mentions that during his “peak” as an architect he traveled all over the world to do work. I always found that fascinating and would like to learn more in details about where and what he did in different places. The way i plan on doing this interview is to video-tape/record him in person or through skype if i a not able to go home before this assignment is due.

The first proposal is definitely the most detailed and well thought out. I like how all you proposals are not controversial, but just daily conflicts everyone deals with. Also your first one can be easily visualized through words and is very relatable to many people.
Text proposals: Kaitlyn Mui and Audrey Beralo
1.      Word art/ multimedia poster of the words “Creative Writing” where the words start curving downward in the middle becoming less solid and dripping much like blood because writing is suffering.  In the case where you think things are going to be fun but they turn out to be anxiety reeling as many writers do end up losing their passion or motivation while writing because of writer’s block or simply stress and anxiety trying to meet with deadlines.  Another similar idea that is too similar to make another proposal for is if we changed the word to “Hobbies” or something of the like and have it do the same thing, referencing that sometimes if we do too much of what we love to do, it becomes a chore rather than something enjoyable and you end up hating something that you love in the end, but we wanted it to be two words for visual purposes.
2.      This one would be a text installation in which we would have two people holding hands and the shadows of them instead would be text that describes how the other sees them, one would show a toxic person and the other having good qualities.  We wanted to show that even if one person thinks that their relationship is good, the other may see it as toxic and unhealthy.
3.      The third would be a Barbara Kruger poster type for something a bit more positive and less controversial, it would show a monochrome picture of a kid going through a “phase” either emo, punk, anime, etc. not sure which one.  To parents it can be seen as a phase and maybe it is “just a phase” but the more important aspect is that overall it really isn’t “just a phase” as all of the “phases” that you go through growing up make up who you are overall as a person. At the bottom we would have the words “Not Just a Phase”.

I think your strongest proposal would be the first one. Its very detailed, well thought out and can be easily visualized. The quote and  photo goes hand in hand , and perfectly presents the main objected and meaning of it. Also it is unique and not many groups talked about how women are objects.
Conceptual Art Proposals
Ema and Jaymi
1. Our first idea takes us to the Kirkpatrick Chapel of Rutgers. We envision a girl centered in the middle of the alter. The photo will be posed such that the girl is touching her face or a thigh. Or perhaps the girl’s back might be towards the viewer and a only a male hand will be seen touching her back. The text is to say “God is blind/ I am not braille.” The text is inspired by  the quote, “A woman is not written in braille, you don’t have to touch her to know her” written by Jonaida Estrada González. We want to portray the hyper-sexualization of women and lack of power. God, real or not, is widely believe and accepted for his male stature. The male word is always accepted. Yet, women must be touched, controlled, and handled to be proven as valid.
2. The second incorporates the idea of social-networks, both real and virtual. We would be incorporating real life text messages, and placing them over photos of Rutgers students. Inspiration from this idea comes from the Instagram “Texts from Your Existentialist.”
3. The last idea includes a projection over a run down house. Recently, some buildings have been knocked down on Albany Street in New Brunswick which could serve as the location for the photo. The text would say, “You are my hole heart.” This concept is related to the quote, “Home is where the heart is”. The “hole” represents the loss of someone leaving the home thus abandoning a place in a person’s heart or their whole heart. The message has many interpretations, it could be about romance, loss, and even gun violence.

I believe that your third proposal would be your best bet. Unlike the first two its more relevant, easy to understand, and more people would be able to grasp the meaning behind it. This text art will easily display the corrupt activity, and operation going on in politics.
Jacky and Matt’s Proposals
1. “Sluggish, Lazy, Stupid, Unconcerned”
Frank Ocean’s Be Yourself, is a spoken interlude where his mother talks about drugs and its impact on a student’s life. We’ll be using these words for the picture, “When people become weed-heads they become sluggish, lazy, stupid and unconcerned.”
We’ll have four portraits of two male students and two female students. They will be average students but each depicting different ethnicities through the color of their skin; two white (one male, one female), one black male, one medium skinned female. These students will have separate portraits taken up against different backgrounds and we’ll paste them next to each other side by side to create an illusion that they’re standing next to each other. There will be a lot of room above their head for the beginning of the quote. There will be black tape above all the portrait heads to make it easily edited to read “When people become weed-heads they become”. They will have tape over their eyes where the words “sluggish, lazy, stupid, unconcerned” will be edited over in bright text. Sluggish will be over the white male, lazy will be over the medium female, stupid will be over the black male, and unconcerned will be over the white female. The photo itself will be bright and colorful by editing the images to appear so but the black tape will have bold, white font of the words. The purpose of this piece is to provide commentary on the antiquated views of marijuana by the older population.
2. ”Bring me home”
This will be a photo with text edited in. It will consist of a woman who is sitting up against a plain wall with her face is being covered by her phone, with her the screen facing us. She’s holding out her phone towards the camera so it appears more in focus. Her clothing will have no text; just plain t-shirt and jeans. The text “Bring me” will be written above her head in black, and “home” will be lit on the screen of the phone. We want it to contrast the white background so the background of the screen will be black with white font reading “home.”
3. “Crucify the Insincere”
This phrase would be on a street tag or a sticker.  This quote is from the song “Tonight, Tonight” by The Smashing Pumpkins.  In politics, there has been a great deal of insincerity and dishonesty over the last several months.  This phrase carries a great deal of weight.  This quote can be perceived and interpreted in many ways. The media has already crucified President Trump for his dishonesty.  The purpose of this tag is to mobilize a movement and let the public be heard.  We decided to make it a sticker or tag rather than an art installation so that it is in the eye of the average American.  While this tag isn’t encouraging or inciting physical violence, it coerces the public to “criticize (someone) severely and unrelentingly”.  It forces citizens who are uncomfortable with America’s current political state to consistently question the current administration in the pursuit of a more honest and sincere leader.  The word sin is highlighted to resist complacency and step out of your comfort zone.  Many Americans are religious and live their life attempting to avoid committing sin on a daily basis.  This word is highlighted to avoid the normalcy of everyday life and act contentiously.

3 Proposals (Nikko, Emmanuel)
1. Create a poster similar to Barbra Kruger’s using Photoshop.
Showing a picture of a “bad” figure (Ex. Hitler), and adding quotes  that is stated my a “good” figure (Ex. JFK)showing that not everything is the way it seems.
Tumblr media
2. Use words to make a even bigger words or symbol signifying a bigger picture.
Tumblr media
3. Make a projection showing the dangers of fake news.

Bruce Nauman
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I consider myself as one of those people that have very hard time understand art. Any art piece to me is hard to understand and get its true meanings. However, after thoroughly through these artists’ art pieces I began to recognize symbols, colors, and other things and give it my own definition. The art piece that stood out to me the most was Bruce Nauman’s art work. The two specific art work I have chosen for this is Big Welcome, 1985, and Rinde Head/Andrew Head (Plug to Nose) on Wax Base, 1989. Both these art works don’t hide its meaning, and is very humorous. Nauman’s pieces are very open and is very to see what his intentions were when creating the piece.
The Big Welcome, 1985 is two penises that face each other and create a sort of animation by altering its lights. I chose this piece because I thought it was funny and it shows how Nauman is not afraid to express his thoughts through his art work. Also, many of his other art work are sort of like the Big Welcome. Many of the art works he has create are sexual, graphic, explicit, and funny. These different combinations that he put in his art work is what truly makes his it different from other artists.
The Rinde Head/Andrew Head (Plug to Nose) on Wax Base, 1989 are two heads made of wax. One is head is sort of a navy-blue color, while the other head is a golden yellow color. Both the head are on top of this brownish platform. What is happening in this sculpture is that the navy-blue head is licking the nose of the golden yellow head. I think to me this art pieces stood out because its random and funny. Like all his other pieces many people do not see this kind interaction happen. I think the last time I saw someone like another person nose was when I was in the 3rd grade. So seeing this made me laugh because it looks like they are two adult men doing things that only 9 year olds would do.
In conclusion, I really respect the way Bruce Naumans way of making art. He makes it clear for guys like myself to easily understand what the meaning of the art work is saying. He also does it in a way so that it is humorous and makes it simple to make a reaction out of. Other artists’ art works differ from Naumans because of the way he shows different colors to make them stand out. And the “sexual” part of the art works make him more unique than others, and shows his boldness. Bruce Nauman is a man that is not afraid to get judged for how he thinks and the way he expresses his artwork.
