If you’re feeling angry about today’s news of JK Rowling’s ongoing fuckery, I have an idea other than forcibly removing Harry Potter from her possession and declaring it property of fandom (which is not actually a bad idea, just not super executable).

All I can think about is The Boxes, which was... we’ll just say the ending was not what I was expecting and I’m still trying to parse the implications.

Between the former period where every YA novel was trying to be the next Newbery Medal winner and the present period where every YA novel is trying to be the next Harry Potter, there was a long stretch of YA novels where every book’s plot was “a bunch of weird shit happens” and the moral message was “wow, that was kind of fucked up”, and I think we need to bring that back.
