Why we won’t be seeing White Diamond... Yet

Hey people of Tumblr, I feel like posting a little something that has been on my mind these days now that we have more information on the rebellion and Pink Diamond. Hell, my last post about the subject was made at a time when we still weren't even sure if who started it was really Rose and what was the fate of Pink Diamond. I'm not sure if that has been brought out before, but I want to write about it anyways. With the newest bomb and the beginning of season 5 heading to finally show us Homeworld, many are looking forward for the possibility of White Diamond appearing. However, I have my suspicions that it might not be the case.

"Geez, is that another theory on how White Diamond is the corrupted gem in Serious Steven pyramid?"

Actually, it is. But bear with me a little on this one. Recently I thought that there might be one detail that could potentially explain the inconsistencies surrounding the whole thing: the order of events. Reviewing very briefly what we already know, the pyramid mural depicts Rose and a Gem that might or not be a Diamond, and the mysterious gem that powers the pyramid and its traps. I’m not going into how many parallels between White Diamond and the obelisk since it’s, I think, already well-known and explained in better details elsewhere. I’ll just go directly on what I have to say:

So one big inconsistency we always had that complicated the theory that the obelisk was White Diamond is that she obviously is part of the corruption light when it fired, and one might reasonably assume that the light comes out of the Diamonds themselves rather than a device, so it wouldn't make sense if she was on Earth when the light struck. Furthermore, this event probably marked the definite end of the war, which puts it around 5000 years ago from the current time. You’d think that, as long-lived as gems are, and thus with a different perception of time, a Diamond disappearing for 5000 years would concern a lot of gems, including the other Diamonds seeing as they seem to have close bonds with one another and would notice that suddenly one theirs was missing since the War ended.

However, gems seem to be accustomed to not see the Diamonds for extended periods of time. I’d imagine that certain gems may rarely, if ever, see some of the Diamonds, much less personally. What if instead 5000 years, White Diamond were to be missing for, say, just 200 or 300 years? That’s still a long time for a human, but for Gems it might not be that abnormal, probably comparable to someone going away for the weekend. Not to mention the possibility that if nobody had heard of White Diamond for 5000 years, things in the Gem Empire might have been a lot more chaotic by now.

When Centipeetle depicted the Diamond’s symbol, she drew it just like the old Diamond Authority symbol, only with Pink missing, which fairly obviously means that she had already been shattered. Understandably, Centipeetle drew it as such because the new Era 2 Autority symbol as seen in Peridot’s and Aquamarine’s ships didn’t exist yet. One can’t be sure on how quickly Gems are to develop new Autority symbols (do gems even have graphical designers for that?), but this alone puts even more suspicion on the pyramid since it has the Era 2 symbol in it.

If that corrupted gem was there at the time of the Gem War ended, it wouldn’t know that the Autority symbol had changed. The mural was always thought to depict the rebellion itself, but it’s possible that it actually represents an aftermath: the pyramid Gem was corrupted AFTER the War had ended. This further would explains why this is the only Gem location that has the Era 2 symbol instead of the four diamonds Era 1 symbol.

We do know the Pyramid already existed in the 19th century as it appeared in Buddy Buddwick’s journal. However, it strikes me as odd that the Gems completely ignored the Pyramid until Serious Steven. There’s the possibility that they were “saving” it as a test for Steven…. Which wouldn’t be born until about 200 years later… But judging by the episode, it seemed to be an actual mission, unlike the Cheeseburger Backpack episode were it was an actually test (and even the later episode The Test was entirely based on that), so I can only think that the Gems somehow missed the pyramid last time they were there. Either that or it was only recently that Rose caused the event depicted.

Then again, it also strikes me as odd that Pearl was impressed with the Gem Battlefield being covered in giant strawberries even though she had already been there. Maybe she really IS that forgetful.

One well-know aspect of the pyramid’s mural is that Rose Quartz very prominently seems to be in possession of something that can only be thought to be Pink Diamond’s gem or a shard of it. Previously one would assume that Rose used White Diamond’s own attack to shatter Pink (which WOULD make sense taking in account how real life diamonds can only be broken by other diamonds), but if you take a closer look, there doesn’t seem to be any shattering taking place in it. Instead what DOES seem to be happening is that the gem with Rose is emanating something, perhaps a light, on the other Gem. Taking the above points and putting it in a consistent manner, it seems plausible to conclude that White Diamond came back to Eart and the mural is depicting Rose using Pink Diamond’s corruption light on White Diamond.

It’s safe to assume, based on the screenshot from Lapis’ flashback above, that all of the Diamonds possess the ability to release this corruption light, so it’s not that far off that Pink Diamond had the same ability. However one would still need to explain just how Rose was able to make Pink’s gem use this light, but until new information turns up in the series, there’s only so much one can speculate.

One should also take in account the matter of writing. Steven Universe loves its callbacks and sprinkling little foreshadows and evidences all over to come up later on. In a writer’s perspective, it would make an amazing twist that all this time White Diamond was on Earth AND corrupted and we’ve already seen it. This and the “order of events is not what we thought it was” are very recurrent elements in fiction. It creates a lot of possibilities on how Steven, the Gems, and even the Diamonds face their actions. Think of it like this: how would the Diamonds react if they were to realize that if the Cluster were to emerge it would destroy another one of theirs? How would the Gems use this in order to find a way to “cure” the corrupted Gems they have been collecting? And how would White Diamond herself interact with Steven, the one who recovered her from the pyramid, and how would she be affect by having been corrupted like her enemies? I’d think these are all likely points to be brought up by the series.

To be honest, It would be nice if all of this doesn’t actually turn out to be true, just so we can actually see White Diamond in person next season!
