Just a couple of disjointed notes I wanna get out about the episode today.

1. The kid is wearing a houndstooth pattern, which usually points towards staff

2. Weirdly enough he doesn’t have white hair though

3. The lounder and louder thumping of the heart may as well be a Tell-Tale Heart reference

4. The black smoke that disappeared everyone seems kind of like the one the deans use with the noticeable difference, that it doesn’t pull you in through the floor??

5. The old man in the Tell-Tale Heart is described as having one pale blue eye. Not two, specifically one.

6. Theory time: I’m not awake enough to fully connect the dots but is it possible that this is (metaphorically speaking) the body the deans have hidden under the floorboards?

I think both the “western world” and the “span of a century” thing can also point to another thing: they all speak English. We know that Duke speaks French but he explicitly speaks English with the rest of the cast. We also can see how the different time periods affect the slang people use and how that leads to miscommunications. Language changes drastically over time, so I think there’s a certain timeframe you can pull people from before communication becomes more and more complicated.

Me everytime I see a nevermore theory about the nevermore students : But what about Theo ? He doesn’t fit your theory and you forgot him !

If there is a secret criteria surrounding the admission to nevermore : how does Theo fit that criteria ?

I didn’t know this on my first read, but all the fuckery with Jonathan’s letters is SUCH a classic gothic lit element, seen primarily with women. A great example is The Woman in White, where the female characters have to go to wild lengths to make sure the mail they send is actually making it out of the house. Even when they know it’s being tampered with or stolen, they have to mask this knowledge, because they live in the power of the ones doing it and would only endanger themselves if they brought it up. Being in a position where the only power you have is putting words to paper, and even that is being stolen from you.

I really hope today’s visuals get paralleled again when we finally see what happened at the wedding. Hauntingly stunning stuff

I really like seeing how disorganised the misfits are without leadership. They can’t for the life of them agree on what to do in a crisis and it’s got them almost killed multiple times. They are so highly individualistic it’s been hindering their functionality as a team. Really compelling stuff, especially as a foil to Annabel’s group.

these first few passages always really strike me because of how they define jonathan’s character. He is young — so young. Mesmerized with what he is seeing outside his window always. He is dutiful. So eager to prove himself in his work. A bit naive. Maybe a touch ignorant, but not with any malice. He’s sentimental. He wants to get recipes for his soon-to-be wife and share the beauty of this part of the world with her. That’s what this journal was meant to be. A testament of the love and wonder of who Jonathan Harker is. But that’s not what it becomes… and that’s a bit heartbreaking

I think it’s important to keep in mind, that Duke was (very likely, we don’t know for sure yet) murdered by his assistant. He wants someone he can trust on the lever that’s gonna decide if he lives or dies.

And Duke simply trusts Pluto more.
