the sinners score & the filí remmick theory
in the opening number (“filídh, fire keepers, and griots”), the music that plays under annie’s narration changes slightly as she introduces each of the three oral mystic traditions: for the fire keepers, there’s a brief sample that sounds similar to precolonial choctaw music and even postcolonial hymns. for the griots, there’s a soft humming similar in tone to much of the gospel and blues music in the score. neither of these lines are reprised later, at least that i caught (also—if anyone can identify those two songs please let me know!!). but the refrain associated with the filídh? it’s remmick singing rocky road to dublin.
this might indicate remmick’s longing for the skill of a filí, hence his draw to sammie. it could be a simple parallel between them. it could just be there because it’s a historically significant song. it could mean nothing! but in a score that was assembled so intentionally, i’m so fascinated by the choice to specifically use his singing there.
if he were a filí, his singing of a comparatively more modern song instead of a dán direach could illustrate the loss of pre-christian gaelic storytelling traditions due to colonialism. that they used a famine-era song is also interesting, both for the obvious anti-colonialist narrative and because the great famine saw the birth of the friendship between ireland and the choctaw nation—his direct conflict with the choctaw vampire hunters becomes another metaphor for assimilation and cultural loss.
there’s much more to this i’m certain, but the theory sits nicely with the existing story and opens the door to some interesting analysis, especially of how song and religious recitations are used by members of two diasporas whose oral traditions were quelled by colonialism.

and another thing. Smoke's daughter would've been a problemmm, do you hear me? Smoke as a girl!dad? that little interaction with baby girl outside of the Chow's shop where he taught her how to negotiate? he spent less than 5 minutes with her and the lesson he provided in advocating for herself is the kind that lasts a lifetime. i'm sure she remembered that her whole life. Smoke as a girl dad is teaching his daughter the same things he'd teach his son (he wouldn't discriminate at all). how to negotiate. to know her worth. how to fight. shoot a gun. how to be tough in a hard world and maintain her softness in the comfy one that he'd create for her. he'd try to be stern and principled and being principled would work cause that's the kind of man he is, but stern? it wouldn't last long. she'd have him wrapped around her fingers and he wouldn't mind it at all. if you didn't know her you wouldn't understand her quick wit and her sharp tongue but once it clicked that Smoke was her daddy it would all make sense. she could be an angel or a little devil depending on how you treat her. she'd be strong willed and determined, fair but with a low tolerance for bullshit. she might even be spoiled and possibly a bit bratty cause she always got her way with her daddy but Annie would provide the balance. she'd be a safe space and provide so much nurturing, but she'd also make sure babygirl isn't spoiled "rotten". between being worldly equipped (from daddy) and spirituality equipped (from mama) she'd be a force. and don't let uncle Stack get too many days with her or take her on too many side quests once she's older cause that man wouldn't hold a damn thing back. how to hustle? check. the value of money? check. how to take up space? check. how to do anything a man can do and do it better cause women have a certain kind of ✨power✨? check. between Smoke and Stack Annie would actually be sick of it 😭

Interviewer: "What was like the toughest day on set, would you say?" Ryan (to MBJ): "Twin day. Your last twin day. The cigarette pass. [It was] 120 [degrees], I think." Michael: "Yeah, that was intense. Multiple takes, not a lot of movement so you're standing still in the heat."
