17/153 “Situation At Hand”

From the Minutemen’s final recording, 3-Way Tie (For Last) is perhaps one of the few songs I kind of actually dislike, “Situation At Hand”.

It starts off as a disjointed instrumental dirge – like something BLACK FLAG would have put out. You know, those free-jazz instrumental “jams” from THE PROCESS OF WEEDING OUT?

It’s almost unbearable. But then… out of no where it becomes this short little rocker. I like the song at the end, but the lead-in, oof.

But it’s par for 3-Way Tie (For Last), an odd mix of slow long covers, noodlely instrumentals, spoken word pieces and some solid tuneage. When I started this list, I wasn’t sure where it would lead. I was fairly certain “Spoken Word Piece” would end up at 153. Now I’m not so sure!

NOTE – this song popped up in my shuffle and I formulated my review on first listen. In digging a little deeper I re-realized it’s Joe Baiza playing guitar on this track.

For now, no tie for last, this is 153.

I used to be into the Chili Peppers so hard it was a lifestyle. And now I wonder who likes this band? Apparently it's millions and millions of Super Bowl watching fans... but why? Does this make you want to do anything? zzzzz

I acknowledge it's all me. It's my tastes that have changed. But even applying the subjective rules of taste, this is just boring. There always seems to be something somewhat interesting going on with the music... but it never really punches. Mid-tempo easy listening. And this goes all the way back to BY THE WAY. That's about when I realized it was over for me. But I kept listening. This band is like STAR WARS to me. As much as it no longer really fills me with a lot, or any, joy, I'll never completely be done with it.

Really though, where it went awry, I think, is when Anthony started "singing". He dropped down into a kind of croon vocal. And he's not really a good singer. Now clearly you can be a terrible singer and yet still deliver something amazing. But this ain't it. Again, FOR ME. If this brings you joy, more power to you. ‪#‎partywithmepunker‬
