Akira Mohri (1935-2008)

The artist and illustrator Akira Mohri (1935–2008), second son of Nihonga (Japanese-style painter) artist Shuukou Mohri,   was born in the Tottori prefecture of Japan.  His Grandfather,  Shounan, was also a Nihonga artist and Akira was not late to following in the artistic footsteps of his family. In high school his talent for oil painting had already bloomed and his art was selected for several prefectural and countrywide exhibitions. After graduating high school Mohri moved to Tokyo and for a while made an effort to make a name as a Fine Artist, but eventually he changed his goals and started working as a Commercial Artist. From 1957 to 1972 he worked as a fashion illustrator for the advertising department  of Isetan flagship store in Shinjuku.  

From 1971 he started working as a freelance illustrator while also making original art. He worked on everything from advertising, book covers, movie posters, and illustrations for stories in magazines and newspapers.

Some of his most celebrated projects were illustrations for Ayako Sono’s stories  “Kami no oyogoreta te/The unclean hand of god”, “Tenjyou no ao/The blue of the sky”, and “Aika/Lament”. His cover illustrations for the hardback editions of Osamu Tezukas manga “Hi no tori/ Phoenix”, the cover illustrations for the historical sculpture books published by  Gakken, and his illustrations for Mister Donut packages.    

In 2005 his health deteriorated, and he was hospitalized. He returned to his hometown in Tottori 2007 to recuperate, but passed away April 2008.

My love of realism makes me use bold touches, because they make my realism even more effective.

It would be much better if I could find the original designs for all these characters but they’re either buried deep in some folder or I dont even have access to them. I’ve never inquired but it seems very early in OK KO’s development a ton of background character concept art was produced. I was still freelancing for OK KO on this episode and was given the original concept art as well as the board artists redesigns.

You’ll have to take my word that each of these are a departure from their original concept design. My job was to blend a little of the old in with the new for the final design. 

Purrcival has been revised, I’m not sure by who, but I had drawn him holding a book in his left hand. I dont mind that it needed to be taken out but I want to be clear that I did not draw that hand.

my very first two episodes i storyboarded on OK KO! aired today!!! working with @dannyducker rules, it’s hard work but i’m still having fun..

all 5 new episodes are airing every hour all week so don’t miss em. :03

Our first OK KO miniseries aired yesterday, and continues airing all week! The crew all worked so hard on this thing and we hope you love it! Wisdom, Strength, and Charisma was boarded by @stevieborbolla and @ryannshannon, and they did a stellar job establishing the world of Point Prep. It was a challenge to design every character introduced here, since they all needed to work as the final design for every subsequent ep in the miniseries. I referenced literally everyone’s boards and concepts for this batch! Koala princess was created by @ianjq, hopefully he will post her original concept drawing! I referenced @miraongchua and @cartoonfuntime‘s boards as well both for her and Miss Pastel. Phoebe was originally @dannyducker‘s character as well, but I based her final design off the way @scrotumnose drew her in Mega Football & beefed her up a bunch. And finally, @brandonwuart did concepts for Miss Sunshine, so I based her final model off both his concepts and the boarders’ drawings of her throughout the series. @kalidraws also worked so hard and did an amazing job on the colors! I love all these characters and I hope you do too!

Here are some designs from Mega Football, plus bonus Elodie in pjs from Mystery Sleepover! It was delightful to draw from @scrotumnose and @haewon-lee ‘s cute and very action packed boards for this ep! And @dannyducker and @killapede did a great job figuring out elodie’s v princessy look for Sleepover. Also, mega football features @miraongchua‘s character Glitter Starlight in a major role, so she’s finally got a back view! Amazing colors by @kalidraws and art direction by John Pham!
