Abstract
Beginning with my personal experience, walking around the CBD, I encountered people, nature, I saw people emotions and saw many of the same people repetitively. I was able to show important aspects of my journey/ journeys through relatable symbols. The inspiration for some of the shapes and lines I have chosen to use come from the Samoan symbols used in Tattauing and Tapa cloth making. These symbols showing the journey, life legacy’s, status and many other things which tell stories of life. When recreating my dads move from Samoa to New Zealand with his family as a child I chose specific symbols to base my animating around. These including gender, well-being, emotion, family, direction, and environment., Transitioning from Samoa to New Zealand, my dad didn't have the smoothest experience, the culture shock was very evident. Small things like eating on the ground and praying, due to coming from a Christian family, were no longer a normal activity but almost something he felt embarrassed about. Even the roller-coaster of emotions the move brought upon him, he always had his family no matter what.

Looking into different cartoons such as tom and Jerry and how William Hanna and Joseph Barbera have dramatized everything led me to using animation techniques such as zooming in and out, spinning and extreme close ups. All of these techniques enabling amplification of emotion the characters feel.

To make my animation I started off with making backgrounds for all of my scenes. With the use of photoshop, I was able to create different atmospheres, in hope to create a sense of where the scenes are set.

John Pule “Kavaka” vs Hiapo
Overall the two methods are very similar, aside from the use of colour. Both using rounded forms to symbolize certain things. Pule moved to New Zealand as a child and because of this gave him a less traditional Nicene lifestyle but he still maintained an active connection with his heritage, this shown in his design. Through shapes of the hea fruit, Pule expresses the work of the men, showing leadership. Whereas in the Hiapo design, we see stories strung together from many generations to make one tapa. Both tapa designs show traditional elements that have been passed down from generations to tell stories of beliefs and culture.

Samoan Tatau
The traditional Samoan Tatau is not to do with decoration of the body like typical tattooing but is a way of showing a mans life story and his position and role. Va, meaning the relationship of space, betweenness and to maintain good relationships is a huge part of the Tatau. To perform a traditional Tatau you need years of experience from a professional to ensure the sacredness of the Tatau remains.
Depending on age, parents and/or family members may need to give permission for their son to receive a Tatau. If a Tatau is not complete on one’s body it is a huge embarrassment on the family and takes away the menage and spirituality behind the Tatau. Some recipients do it in peers so they have support throughout the Tatauing and healing process. Family prepares food and clean supplies, pretty much set up their entire wee/ however long the Tatau takes to do.
Due to many infections and some deaths, Samoan Tatauing precautions have been upped, now abiding by more health regulations and using commercial ink most of the time.
While the Tatau technique is very similar to the western ways of tattooing, there is a scarification form of tattooing called Ta Moko which is performed by creating raised groves the in the skin which is then filled with ink. This represents one’s history of achievements, status, and responsibilities.

With the use of symbols used in Samoan Tatauing, I was able to come up with symbols that represent an overall journey of anywhere from a day at the beach to someone's entire life.
Symbols such as the Lizard, used in a lot of Tatauing, I took the meaning behind it, to connect, and turned it into my own variation. Many similarities to Samoan symbols can be seen in my patterns as in my eyes something that has been used for hundreds of years has a lot more significance to people then something brand new and unheard of.
Representation of Va was one of my main goals and I was able to achieve this by showing a journey and including what I imagine to be important. Va represents relationships, not only with people but with the in-between and the earth. All of the symbols I have created and remade represent everything within a relationship with anything.
