Crispy winter morning in lovely French Lick, Indiana. The covered porch with the rocking chairs is a signature feature of this hotel. It may cold now to enjoy the view but when the weather is nice one can find many families hanging out.

Railroad Graffiti #1 

Drive by these ever-changing cast of railroad cars every day on my way to work. Some are clean cut and some are panted in graffiti. This week I was in luck. Took a quick snap from my car and did some corrections in LR CC. I am really liking the ability to finely control the camera using the LR interface. It allows me to control the lens focal length, ISO, WB with the option of seeing highlight clipping in real time which I think is a really nice feature to have.

I wasn’t sure if this was going to work as everything online seemed to suggest that consumer grade C41 film will fail miserably if push processed. For the uninitiated pushing film is basically lying to the camera that the film is faster than its rated speed so that one can use faster shutter speeds in low light. The downside to doing this is the film will be underexposed and must be accounted for during film development. We do this by increasing the development time so that negatives develop with enough density for scanning or printing.

On my short weekend trip to Paris I packed some consumer grade Kodak gold 200 film. It was pretty grey and dark most of the weekend so I decided to throw caution to the wind and shoot the film at 2X the rated speed at ISO800. Once I came home I processed the film in Tetenal C41 developer and added 1 minute for every stop I underexposed for a total development time of 5 minutes and 15 seconds. Most of the frames developed with enough density except maybe a few. I also think pushed negatives are probably easier to scan and adjust for any color shift that might have occurred due to the push processing. Overall I was pleased with the results and will likely continue pushing this film.
